ML research is intellectual tourism. island-hopping from one domain to another without any real interest in the language, culture, or history of the people living there; taking photos, leaving garbage; jetting off to the next place. some destinations are more popular for a while

i'm super excited about @timnitGebru launching an independent research group. i think this is going to be the next wave of AI research: people studying harms that AIs project, with self-conscious attention on funding sources & power structures, & using governance/regulation vocab

@ellievhall white guys feel more comfortable deplatforming "others" vs fellow white guys, which feels less morally palatable. so we see bizarre readiness to suspend women and people of color, but incredible reluctance to suspend white men (citing that they're newsworthy, established, etc)

every paper and article i see that promotes generative AI in any specific domain is wildly speculative about benefits and applications, and intransigently conservative about already-manifested harms. but ML is, at its core, "consume everything now, maybe spit out something later"

i can't put into words how angry it makes me to see someone ask "isn't chatbot therapy better than no therapy?" people deserve real care, and the whole "this or nothing" turd is especially threatening against a backdrop of a trillion-dollar tech company's cheap facsimile of care

for years, SF has been an experimental lab full of unwilling subjects patiently trying to live and move around these growing pile of unaccountable autonomous vehicles, garbage taking up public space, and myriad bits of obnoxious surveillance tech people should do this more often

Folks complain about ML algorithms drawing inference by learning from millions of examples. Archaeologists will reconstruct the complete history of life on earth from six bones and pair of sticks and I don’t hear anyone complaining

super thankful for that work on a Uyghur classifier that came out a few years back. i'm sure that went a long way toward stopping discrimination.

it's worth underscoring what's happening here. the system is drawing on text based on your input. so when you say "take a deep breath", you're providing additional search terms; it's searching for those kinds of corpora that have that phrase, and generating words that follow

An example of deteriorating AI research is this work: "Telling AI model to “take a deep breath” causes math scores to soar in study DeepMind used AI models to optimize their own prompts, with surprising results."
