Among my favorite moments working on God of War Ragnorak: creating bloody (but vegan) source with the Bob Ross of Gore
@schapps
, crafting harmonic overtone source for Mjolnir using Jeff Darby’s axe blanks from GOW 3. Our global Foley efforts don’t belong to any one person… (🧵)
my name is Joanna. In 2016, I became the first openly trans woman of color to win a Primetime Emmy. You’ve probably heard my footsteps, breathing, kisses, or props in films, TV, and now games. I’ve spent the last 9 months at Playstation helping expand trans healthcare.

Folks. Foley artists don’t “find the perfect effect in a sound library”. We are by definition the people who perform sounds that are too unique to be found or generated with existing source; sounds that are too specific to an image in movement, characterization, or performance
Had a great time speaking with Wired Magazine last month!! Want to thank
@PlayStation
and
@SonySantaMonica
for providing me such a lush canvas to showcase and
@The_BAC
behind the console.
Ever wondered how they make the sound effects we hear in video games? Meet Joanna Fang foley artist for PlayStation Studios and a master at creating sounds for movies and video games like God of War: Ragnarok. (
@_Foley_Artist

I’ve been hired by Sony to be
@PlayStation
‘s first in house Senior Foley Artist in over 15 years.
@The_BAC
and I will combine NY, LA, and SF Foley sensibilities to craft the future of Foley for game audio.
@philsound
and PDSG, thank you for this groundbreaking opportunity!
fun fact: the guy and gal who performed the original clicker vocals got to reprise their roles in the Last of Us TV adaption!! Phil, the audio lead at Naughty Dog at the time, performed the male clicker and designed that iconic sound. Vid from

There was a lot of fantastic cosplay at MTG Philly this past weekend. But the most divisive reactions I saw and heard were in response to Scott’s Magic30 booster box. Cosplay as protest or statement is my fav genre. Players thought it was funny, organizers told him to gtfo.
Had twitter off for a sec!
I’m Joanna Fang, senior Foley artist at Sony Playstation. I perform custom sound effects! you may have heard my props or footsteps on games like Just Cause 3 or Horizon Forbidden West. I have a ludicrous shoe collection.

my childhood girl squad literally assembled from across the continent to help usher me in. one flew from Canada, the other from D.C. the amount of care and wish fulfillment they provided was fundamental to resocializing. not patronizing at all, extremely based.
a lifetime ago, I got to Foley a documentary on Ryuichi Sakamoto called Coda. The sound supervisor told us how Ryuichi himself co-mixed the film and was enamored with the Foley track: the intricacies of raindrops and crunch of leaves under footsteps.
I’m feeling pretty lucky to have grown up without a ton of Harry Potter toxoplasmosis in my brain. I empathize with a lot of y’all feeling torn up, but also, come on. Garth Nix’s Sabriel was way more based and didn’t have a Chinese girl called Cho-Chang.
When you Foley a documentary subject (a real person), there’s a different level of sympathy you feel for them. This was one of the greatest honors of my life, and the validation deeply steadied me during a time of significant personal turmoil. Thank you Mr. Sakamoto

I’m 31 and perform Foley sounds for triple A games. While it took 12 years of nonstop dedication to ‘git gud’, the resulting personal apocalypse required difficult emotional work to pull myself out of the self neglect nosedive of my 20’s. Glad I pulled through
Greetings fellow old (30+) people!
I’m 36, at my all time peak hotness, a homeowner, working at my dream job with the best people, and living my best polyamorous life. 💕
@georainbolt
a weird hunch. ex and I used to sit in the northeast corner of washington square park and the back right reminds me of the NYU Grad School brick buildings. That park has been renovated a million times but that walking path has those trees, especially one super close to the path
Joanna Lore. I have the sound of my favorite pair of heels walking on concrete tattoo’d to each ankle. If you’re a Mitski super fan, you’ve heard this tattoo before in
@AngerZia

This expectation for a sound to satisfy a listener is so impressionistic that the synthesis itself must be done to picture at the moment of recording. the term “Foley artist” isn’t completely interchangeable or synonymous with “sound designer” or “sound effects editor”
Average human reaction time to a visual cue is around 200ms, compared to 160ms for auditory cues. If you’re site reading the scene, that translates to roughly 5-6 frames (at 24fps) of human latency on the Foley stage.
I want to be the Anthony Bourdain of Foley and check out Foley studios in every country. l'd love to be be a stateswoman for Foley as an international and human art form. We’ve been huddled around the fire and banging rocks together to help tell stories since the Stone Age.
My friend’s father passed away unexpectedly last week and she asked if I could clean up and isolate his voice from a video of their last karaoke night. This is the 3rd time i’ve done sound restoration for a funeral and bringing closure through this work has no higher honor. 💔
There are sound designers who perform their own Foley, record their own source, and scour unique props. There are Foley artists who have multiple hats, who occasionally moonlight as sound designers. But. The physical processes, performance, and production of Foley define it
Just finished my first month for Playstation. I left the studio tonight with a massive smile on my face; my joy for Foley has been rekindled. I got into a death march the last few years, burning out on a barrage of indie features with 3 or less Foley record days allotted (1/??)
On my second day as Senior foley artist at
@PlayStation
, I got thrown into the Forbidden West head first. I’m blown away that *this* game is my first credit with the new studio and Foley mixer/partner in crime
@The_BAC
. (the cue was PR GLOVED HAND HIT METAL TABLE)
Scott’s full cosplay included a trash bin with the faces of Hasbro and WOTC’s CEO’s. He was informed by staff that if he were to show up in full costume, he would be banned from future Magic events. well, yolo. in the closing hours he grabbed his trash bin pants and went for it
@grixisghoul15
lmao, as a mill player, i have on multiple occasions had to explain hindsight bias or “schrodinger’s top deck”. the presumption that a card was dated or pre-destined to be drawn into hand rather than milled is very much a self absorbed, savior complex way of looking at the game
Got to do loads of gore sound effects on the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film for Netflix. Career highlight Foley cues: PR GLASS SHARD CUT FACE OFF. PR CHAINSAW BLOOD SPLATTER.
Tonight was nuts. Congrats to my mentor Foley artist Les Bloome at Alchemy Post Sound who won for both The Bear and Prey. He taught me invaluable lessons which I brought to Playstation and God of War. It was great to celebrate our first MPSE’s together with our respective teams
Today we announced that our HR Benefits team in conjunction with Playstation Pride and the hard work of advocates like myself successfully negotiated Aetna to match WPATH standards for our employees. FFS, BBL, the entire spectrum of gender affirming care is now covered.
Amazing visiting our sound design teammates in Japan, development partners at Kojima Productions, and Foley brethren at Toho Studios. What an absolutely fantastic trip so far. And yes, I really like posing as iconic mascots.
Nutty day on the Playstation Foley stage. Really awesome to have seen the VR2 from prototype to release and gotten a chance to create Foley on the system before it was announced. Now that the cat is out of the bag and it’s in player’s hands, can’t wait to hear people’s feedback!
Went through my childhood bedroom and found my old 8 track Tascam Portastudio DP-01FX. My high school self was bitter that I couldn’t afford Pro Tools, but I appreciate it so much more now in retrospect. This 44khz 16bit machine kindled my love for audio engineering
@ericeidelstein
After Life by Kore-Eda Hirokazu. The ultimate encapsulation of this genre, the post mortem evaluation of a life lived and judged. It breaks my heart with its simplicities and revelations, graceful and elegiac. A must watch!
My Japanese cousin told me that no one on his side of the family had ever seen me Foley until now. And then it hit me, I’m really grateful that
@WIRED
localized the Foley featurette to Japanese and Chinese. My family in Taiwan and Japan finally got the tour and demo haha
the timing and content of the video was designed with my protection as a priority. We could use more of that type of tasteful and earnest journalism. Visibility with protection, sincerity without sensationalism. My massive thanks to the
@WIRED
team and Playstation

Spotted in the wild!! The print version of my interview with Wired Magazine finally hit shelves in the UK this week!! Pick up a copy for posterity, you know, juuust in case the video version get wiped out by an EMP over Condé Nast’s servers!

As a lifelong SG-1 fan, it was amazing to finally talk to the legend himself after having walked some of Kratos’s footsteps and Foleyed his incredible performances in GOW:R.
Progress report. Big day of ups and downs emotionally and physically but overall still on a very positive trajectory. Bandages come off tomorrow afternoon, but as of right now, Schrodinger’s still got my goth nose.
@BriannaWu
Thank you, this is absolutely what people haven’t been talking about but is at the heart of the issue. The cultural soft power the books have on people is fascinating and I think the author’s transphobia is elevated in cruelty ESPECIALLY due to people’s childhood reliance on it
Sometimes i’m like “Foley!! really makes yah think! so thought provoking!” Other times i’m like “JOANNA SMASH, SHOW JOANNA GAME CAPTURE, JOANNA GRAB TRASH CAN AND SMACK FLOOR FOR BIG BANG BANG, BLAKE PUT MACHINE IN RECORD”.
Progress Report: 9 days post op, nose splint and cast are off, we’re packed and ready to fly home. Bruising and swelling coming down, gotta wear this compression bandage for my chin for a week, and treat my nose like the goth princess she is, but it’s going to be okay
Got to speak with my friend and film journalist Karen Han
@Slate
on Foley sound effects and some of my Film and TV work from years past! Some fun anecdotes to hopefully lighten the load this week
32 Sounds, a documentary I am featured in, just finished its live theatrical tour in San Francisco a few nights ago. One of my life goals is getting my Foley described in closed captioning, this one takes the cake.
Huge day for
@The_BAC
and I. We’ve spent the last 3 months swinging around as Spider-man, sharpening knives for Wolverine, sourcing wood for Kratos, and collecting metal for a certain droid. Congrats to the devs, trailer editors, and Playstation Sound teams featured today.
since 2016, I have preferred to keep a low profile. I have had many difficult experiences by being too visible, tokenized and thrust into spotlights. But, I had a really good day, and I can sleep easy knowing my coworkers aren’t going into debt for gender affirming care.
I’m so stoked for y’all to see what we’ve been working so hard on. I celebrated my 2 year anniversary at Playstation tonight and my heart soared seeing people’s immediate reaction to this. So close, so damn close!!
We're going to heal the world October 20th, 2023! Watch our Story Trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which premiered at

I was severely depressed during that time and lost myself in my work. We focused on sincerely recreating the sound of every pencil scribble on sheet music, pills shaken and swallowed, footsteps through busy NYC streets. The entire process restored my faith in the art
The opening minutes of Ghost start with a harrowing chaotic cavalry charge, a massacre, a duel, and a stealthy claustrophobic retreat before this *glorious* moment. You gain full control of Jin Sakai’s mount as the aspect ratio lifts, and you’re in the wide open world. Chills.
Overjoyed. I’m so proud of this team. Epic and massive games require epic and massive audio. I couldn’t ask for a better Foley mixer and partner than
@The_BAC
and support from one of the strongest sound design cadres ever assembled. Grateful to have played our part
Playstation has lots of vacancies on our careers website across many studios, disciplines, and departments. While I can’t speak for PS or for everyone, my experience as a Taiwanese American trans woman at PS has been great and continues to improve thanks to empathetic leaders.
We accomplished this through amazing research and advocacy by folks in Playstation on every level. While I helped play a role in this North American expansion, it took caring leadership and empathetic managers to escalate so that our voices were heard at the bargaining table.
Once during a tour of the Foley stage, someone asked “what library do you use to make your footstep sound effects”. I jokingly replied “I find a local Goodwill or Payless, buy a pair that sounds good, we bring it back here”, I gestured to the pile of shoes between us
I’ve had the strangest and coolest month. Got to have a great phone call with FKA Twigs and Jordan Hemingway about Foley, flew out to Melbourne with
@The_BAC
for
@APRAAMCOS
‘s High Score, and tomorrow we’re off to Japan to visit Sony HQ, Kojima Productions, and Toho Studios.
My first priority at Sony Playstation was getting people hopelessly addicted to Magic. A jumpstart box, some brewing, and five months later; we held our first pre-release party tonight, and of course

emerged victorious, winning prizes supplied by

@FairieNamedMars
I do this and the genuine surprise my sister had when we were in a jam on a road trip and she couldn’t find any was priceless. Surprised pikachu into big smiles.
Progress report: most of the bandages and sutures came off today. Still loads of swelling especially around the eyes and one more post op appointment this week to take the splint out but. almost. there.
I was contemplating something Goro Koyama had told me at the time: the idea that Foley isn’t an art, but actually a craft considering our deference to what’s on screen. I countered by saying our work is commissioned performance art
honestly can’t understand the authenticity argument when it comes to pineapple on pizza. Tomatoes aren’t even native to Europe or Italy. Go nuts, it’s all fusion anyhow.
@grixisghoul15
how often doss a player lose a game of commander, and before scooping, quickly check how many cards or answers they could’ve drawn had they been given the opportunity. i do it all the time, but it’s hindsight bias at its finest “if only i had one more land, or one more turn”
I accidentally left applause sound effects on when I was sound designing Mitski’s Working for the Knife MV. Her comment to me was like “the bursts of applause are a bold choice but let’s mute them. otherwise, I have no notes for the rest of the sound design.”
Our industry is undergoing a reckoning. I was selected to join The Future Class in such a tumultuous time, brought in by a supportive team. I'm just *one* Foley artist, but hold me to this: I will do everything in my power to make this industry more diverse and equitable.
Who represents the future of our incredible video game industry?
Today we are introducing
#TheGameAwards
Future Class 2021, 50 inspiring individuals from across gaming.
Meet all 50 of them and hear their stories now!
@egregirls
If I trust the person asking, I tell them it’s estradiol. if not, I just change the subject and start talking about weed “LeGaLiZe It BrUh 420 bbbBuuurn it”
I brought up so many sound designers and Foley artists during the interview as having the most profound effect on my Foley and on the overall sound of the game to the point where the producers had to hold me and go “but this is about *your* obsession Joanna”
I’m Joanna Fang. I’m a Taiwanese American Foley artist. I make performative sound effects. I don’t write as much as i used to, but you’ve likely heard me kissing, dancing, and fighting without knowing it. I’m proud and out as a trans woman.
