This is how Maya works cause it loads it into a new file that it pastes from, the funny bit is because pasting is so shit in Maya you sometimes end up pasting something from 5-6 MONTHS ago by mistake.

til you can copy/paste objects from one instance of blender to another.
And yes, you can even close all instances of blender down, load a fresh file up and paste the same object in.
Oh, and yes, this still works even after shutting down and rebooting your pc.
