I’m a strategist and a storyteller. I fell in love with filmmaking because it was how I responded to uncomfortable, heartbreaking, and maddening human truths and experiences. Nearly all of my films are impact driven and paint a picture of a world I wish existed. A THREAD!

Anytime a Black filmmaker (ESPECIALLY a Black woman filmmaker) asks me a question about my process, I try to be as detailed and helpful as possible. I just don’t understand gatekeeping. “Work hard” and “believe in yourself” IS NOT ADVICE. FILMMAKERS NEED REAL ADVICE.

Holy fuck. I got signed to a roster, directed 2 films and a visual album, produced 6 commercials, got a fully remote senior producer role, and awarded a Black woman director to a commercial campaign for the first time in my career….THIS YEAR?! Lowkey 2021 kinda slapped ..

Abbott Elementary’s pilot script helped me properly format a mockumentary script. 3 cameras rolling simultaneously with an ensemble cast is A LOT to write & direct, but I’m proud. full thread on the process coming after we wrap. Press release:

The sooner filmmakers start to think like marketers the better. Know your audience. Your film is not for “everyone”. Your film has a specific audience and your festival submissions and distribution plan should cater to the audience that you are trying to reach.

No one talks about the lack of control you have when you are contracted to produce/direct in “partnership” with an entity. U make very few decisions & don’t have final say in ANY aspect of “your” work. don’t let anyone shame you for being an indie filmkr. There’s real power there

It’s Black History Month, not BIPOC history month. Adjust your drafted posts accordingly.

I always start my films with production decks that outline the following: • logline • synopsis •target audience •themes/subjects •script or interview questions • production / shoot/ post schedule •budget •targeted festivals & distribution plan
