Have you seen the Steve hitstun canceling clips floating around?
Did you hope they were fake?
Well sorry to burst your bubble!
Introducing Phantom MLG:
To those who think that there isn't any chance the Smash community overreacted to PMLG and that they obviously know so much better than Steve labbers,
I present to you:
The Smash community's reaction to attack cancelling.
I wanted to clarify:
I never intended things to come this and had no idea a serious ban conversation would develop out of posting what to me was just another silly Steve tech.
I never wanted Steve banned, playing Steve was some of the most fun I had with the game and in general.
Calling all Steve labbers!
Through the wonder of modern technology, I finally extracted the inputs of this glitch.
If we work together we might find a way to replicate it consistently and bring misery to our enemies!
In every smash game there's always one character who is considered the best and hated by many.
64: Pikachu
Melee: Fox
Brawl: Meta Knight
Smash 4: Bayonetta
Smash 5:
So now that people are starting to accept that PMLG is mid at best, why are we actually banning Steve?
1. Steve is nowhere near overcentralizing, barely being top 1 in results, and quite a few top Steves' results have been slowly dropping.
2. PMLG is far from ban-worthy
I can confirm you can PMLG in HDR, though with the buffer system changes I don't think you can actually Phantom block so you gotta set it up in a different way
The year is 20MC, Steve players are doing NILs so fast that not even Falco players can compete against the vertical threat range of the character with the worst jump in the game.
#SSBU_Steve
If Steve does get banned because of this then: Steve mains I am sorry.
I might get hate for this but I truly think people are overreacting. This tech is not gonna ruin the game and in fact, most steves will probably not use it.
So which character has fast frame data, good damage output, strong kill options, a good combo game with enough depth for labbing, good recovery, and is not ROB?
The end days are upon us.
Just wanted to explain this clip:
Steve is setting up PMLG with a shorthop percisely when byleth upbs.
There is no reason to do it in a real game, just shield.
The wall of text for your reading comfort:
"
There are actually 3 different ways to set up PMLG: Placing a block without landing on it, placing a phantom block, or doing a fail block animation (for example trying to place a block outside of the grid borders).
SDJ conversions are a way of transitioning from uptilt into pickloops similarly to ladder loops.
The main benefit of SDJ conversions is easily covering all airdodge directions, as the frame window to airdodge exists in both combo routes at 0%.
Steve techs and their input, visualised using the training modpack and Blujay's controller display mod.
A thread.
For starters here is my controller layout for reference.
One last thing:
You cannot perform the tech while being in the middle (or endlag) of any move, meaning the steve must simply willingly fall into it.
Is this tech broken, well yes, literally, but it's not character-ban worthy.
Steve has 2 block placing animations, a 4 frame animation for when he is falling and a 6 frame animation for when he is rising.
The Steve meteor bucket tech (which btw should be called MLG water bucket) seems to only work with the falling animation.
Top Players, before you call for Steve or the tech to be banned please make sure you understand it!
DM me any questions you have about it and I will try to explain it.
It's a high execution frame 1 escape option (you must know how to time the PB for that specific move\combo),
a low% anti juggle tool on the character that already has Anvil,
and a low% ledge option.
Another thing is that IT DOES NOT INVALIDATE MULTIHITS, I've said it before but most multihits have quick enough hits and low enough hitlag for PMLG to be physically impossible to hit on reaction.
Placing a block without landing on it or doing a Phantom Block puts you in a "strong phantom state". During this state, you can cancel the hitstun of the next attack that hits you while being able to drift, nair, and upair freely.
Landing, Jumping, airdodging, or doing any other action not mentioned above will break the strong phantom state.
A fail block animation will put you in a "weak phantom state".
Phantom block can actually be performed out of any lag in the game (including the hitstun of other moves!)
The most useful and consistent way is out of steve's own moves, as the timing is constant and they can be done anywhere.
This state is identical to the strong one except for the additional caveat that using upair or nair will break this state, meaning you won't be able to cancel the hitstun of the next attack without setting up PMLG again."
@SsbuTree
I exclusively play through competitive discord servers, if steve is universally banned playing him would be like picking great cave offensive as the stage, it isn't happening.
3. There have been no indications that Steve Vods get fewer views (aka "Steve is killing the game!")
4. Banning a character for being annoying to play against is stupid and can apply to half the cast.
5. Banning a character for carrying is stupid and can apply to all the cast
An easy way to know if you did a Phantom block successfully is to perform a PBR, press the left stick to the opposite direction when performing a PB and you will b reverse it, turning around mid-air.
@TrulsWasIgni
"Not fun to fight against and requires too much counterplay", I am sorry but are we playing a competitive fighting game or hanging out with the boys?
@Cu4dr0Ssbu
It only works on the very next hit, so it will cancel the first hit of any multihit but the faster a multihit is, the harder PMLG is to pull off.
6. New players rising with Steve is not ban-worthy.
Steve is an incredibly strong character.
He also represents the biggest video game of all time and as such has a huge player base consisting of mostly younger players who are the demographic most likely to rapidly improve.
Steve's Uptilt->Upsmash combo works from 0 until extremely high %.
What other character can do the same combo for the entire duration of a match?
#SSBU_Steve
Every once in a while I get these thoughts that I might actually be good at this game.
The game of course disagrees and immediately proves that I am in fact 100% carried.
#SSBU_Steve
I miss the times when steve was considered a "gimmick wifi mid-tier" and we could lab stupid shit as much as we want and it was "showing that steve is actually good" and not "breaking the game".
One counterplay to PMLG is that if you suspect your opponent is fishing for it you can go for a stronger move you wouldn't be able to do usually.
Since PMLG requires being actionable, the steve will simply fall into the move and get put into tumble, denying the PMLG.
