One more time, talked to Fred VanVleet, Dan Tolzman, Danny Green, Adrian Griffin, Masai Ujiri, Phil Handy, Jamaal Magloire, Chris Boucher, Matt Devlin, Wayne Embry, Kevin DiPietro, and more about the Raptors winning it all:
Serge was such a big part of Toronto’s team chemistry. Bonded with Kawhi, didn’t cry about being benched. Some huge playoff games. One of the keys to the Raptors title.
Classic Marc Gasol on getting Finals advice from Pau Gasol: "He was playing Boston at that time and then he played Orlando and third year he played Boston again. What could I ask him, like how to guard Rasheed Wallace?"
Why did Kyle Lowry wear the Damon Stoudamire jersey: "He was the first player drafted here, it was kind of a remembrance how long it took the start of a great franchise, and yes this is a game-worn, original jersey."
This guy would get a ring if the Raptors can win one more game this season. So would Delon Wright, C.J. Miles, Greg Monroe, Malachi Richardson and Lorenzo Brown:
Kyle Lowry wearing a Damon Stoudamire throwback for Raptors pardade day is perfect. The first great Raptors PG to the best one. Former teammates in Memphis and friends. Lowry has immense respect for Mighty Mouse.
Kyle Lowry is +235 the past two years of the playoffs, by far the highest mark in the NBA. Kawhi Leonard is next at 198 entering today. For all the hate (for both of these guys), Khris Middleton is third, Danny Green fourth.
Oladipo wipes away a tear and gives a thumbs up as he's wheeled to the locker room. Great player and great person. Truly an awful moment. All the best to him.
One Raptors stat I forgot last night: Kyle Lowry passed Allen Iverson, who as a Philly kid he idolized, in career assists. The next two on the list for Lowry: Some guy named Michael Jordan and one of Lowry's mentors, Chauncey Billups.
We just chatted with Nick Nurse. More to come. Basically Kawhi said he was going home. Can't fault him for that. Nurse told him he changed a lot of lives, including his and thanked him for it. Said Raptors will be hungry and players will have to step up.
R.J. Barrett today on what the Raptors winning the NBA title means for basketball in Canada: "Hopefully it inspires the nation ... I was jumping up and down screaming, watching the game. It means a lot for our whole country, as you’ve seen. That’s the only team we’ve got."
Remember when the Raptors got a first (OG Anunoby), a second (Norman Powell) and the space to sign Cory Joseph for Greivis Vasquez? That was pretty good.
Pascal Siakam hit one three-pointer as a rookie, 29 as a sophomore. Nailed five last night. Now hitting 2.5 a game at 39% accuracy. He steps back with ease. Absolute nightmare to defend. What a unique story.
Tristan Thompson referred to Kyle Lowry as a "Hall-of-Famer" after the game last night. "He’s a (five)-time All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, an NBA champ. He’s their backbone," Thompson said.
Scottie Barnes on why Pascal Siakam is his favourite player: "Just the amount of heart and effort he puts in every day. He's a good example for us young guys."
Danny Green told me this possibility of winning a title was the first thing he thought of when he got traded to Toronto. First in East last year, LeBron gone, adding himself and Kawhi ...
November 10: Terence Davis sets career high with 13 points.
November 13: Terence Davis sets career high with 15 points.
November 18: Terence Davis sets career high with 16 points.
November 20: Terence Davis sets career high with 17 points (and counting)
The Raptors had some spectacular flops over the years, but their corporate cousins, the Leafs, raise the bar several levels. It’s almost beyond belief.
Kawhi: "I told them today we were playing soft early, we were letting the ball bounce two or three times before someone got a rebound and by me saying that I have to show them a tougher game ... That’s what I try to do, lead by example."
My hot take: Raptors should just do a ring of honour with various numbers, such as Vince Carter’s 15, DeMar’s 10 and Kawhi’s 2 (and put a statue of Kawhi’s shot outside). If they have to retire a jersey and/or put a number out of circulation, it should be Kyle Lowry’s No. 7.
Raptors senior advisor Wayne Embry to me on the team finally winning it all. He's been on board 15 years, in addition to his decades in the NBA. His first title since 1968 with Boston: "I didn't know an old man could cry."
Evan Mobley, the top big man prospect in the NBA Draft, says
Raptors are "a good player development organization. Players go there, they get better. Great city and all that.
There’s a lot of different teams that have that aspect and Toronto is definitely one of them."
Kyle Lowry moved passed the great Larry Bird into 42nd in career NBA assists last night. The great Dwyane Wade up next, likely next game. Lowry's 5th amongst current players.
Masai says "we will figure out something for Kyle" (in terms of a statue). Also singles out OG Anunoby for a remarkable season, bouncing back from tragedy.
Masai Ujiri: "We've won here and we're going to win again. I truly, truly believe ... That's why I stayed here. This is one of the top cities in the NBA."
Might sound crazy, but Scottie Barnes has a great chance to become the most popular Raptor ever. Combines immense talent with personality and work ethic.
Raptors say in statement about OG Anunoby extension: "OG is the epitome of the skilled, powerful, determined player we want in our organization long-term. Remember, he doesn’t shoot to miss,” Bobby Webster said. “We’re really pleased that OG will be with us for seasons to come.”
Dwane Casey says DeMar DeRozan's ailing father sent a video message to the team from his hospital bed letting them know he's pulling for them. Really inspired them.
Kyle Lowry on a fan pushing him again said there’s no place for fans like that in the NBA. Second time that’s happened to him and he’s not sure if he will be able to control himself in reaction if it happens again. He’s clearly had enough of this nonsense.
One thing I'm wondering is why it feels like so much of the Raptors fanbase has turned on Siakam? Or is it just the vocal minority? Talented player. Good dude. Great story. Is it just because he got paid and has struggled? Is it new fans spoiled by title? Genuinely curious.
Pascal Siakam has passed Jose Calderon and is now 8th on Toronto's all-time scoring list. Jonas Valanciunas up next on the Raptors all-time list, then MoPete.
Michael Jordan terrorized Cleveland for years. They later got LeBron. Maybe Toronto somehow gets one of the best players ever on their side one day. That's the most optimism I've got for you.
OG Anunoby says having to sit and watch the entire run last year has taught him to not take anything for granted. Is enjoying being on the floor and contributing. Looking forward to the challenge of defending Boston's big guns.
OG Anunoby was such a steal. Have talked to a number of NBA award voters from other markets and he was leading contender amongst Raptors to make an all-defensive team this year. Would be deserved. Coming along at other end now too.

Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin coached World team and I asked him about putting all 4 Canadians on the court at the same time. He said it was “special.” Wanted to do it because there were 4 of them. Marvelled are how far Toronto has come Raptors-wise and how it has rubbed off.
Raptors fans have quickly warmed to Terence Davis and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Already fan favourites whenever they check in. Davis continues to remind how hilariously unscientific NBA drafting is.
Shocking. Was told by multiple people at least one of these guys was also stopping people from getting to their live broadcast spots and doing it in an aggressive way. Plus swearing at photographers who said they couldn’t see.
Clips went all in to build this team. Stocked the Thunder up nicely, including with one 🇨🇦 star. Now knocked out by Canada’s other brightest NBA light.
Raptors are going to be a tough out for any opponent in the playoffs. Will grind them down. Whoever beats them will be weakened for the next round(s). A lot of heart and a lot of smarts.
Scottie Barnes did everything tonight.

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo: "I'm never going to forget this day. Today, honestly, was one of my best days in baseball. And I've been in it for a long time.
I just for sure wanted to win today. Of course I want to win every game, but today was awesome. What a day."
Big ovation for new Raptors assist leader Kyle Lowry. Vince Carter even comes over to give him a playful pat. Fred VanVleet feigned tears and other Raptors danced. He's beloved by this group and by Toronto fans.
Between all of OG's comments, Lowry talking about his balls of steel and DeMar telling him to stop waiting (there's no chance it wasn't DeMar, right?) and Nurse talking about the guts of the Raptors that has to be a Top-5 Raptors post-game media session ever.
Raptors on corner three-pointers
C.J. Miles 51%, 49% past two years
Danny Green 45%, 43% past two years
OG Anunoby 45% (1-year)
Kawhi 44% (career)
Lowry 47%
Ibaka 44%
VanVleet 43%
Wright 42%
Thats, pretty good.
Reporter is trying to goad Nurse into attacking lack of Raptors respect (rankings, etc.). He is not playing ball. Nurse indicates he basically doesn’t give a shit about that stuff.
It’s pretty wild that if voting was done now for NBA most improved player, two guys from the same Montreal neighbourhood would deserve Top 5 consideration: Chris Boucher and Lu Dort.
Lowry says he doesn't care if Raptors getting respect of past champions. "Everywhere I've gone guys are so happy for our team. The peers I've seen this summer, it's just about the respect. I don't care about what other people say. We know what we've accomplished."
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a hell of a quote. Bradley wouldn't say what the heatedly discussed on field. Zlatan said this: "He thinks he’s the philosopher of football. I have more goals than he has games. He should follow my rules." Damn. That's NBA level quote work.
Good look for Siakam. Strong fight from the Raptors but once again too few carrying the rest. And another loss. But, the team looks a lot better than it did a couple of weeks ago. Now start Boucher.
Khem Birch said the fit was why he wanted to stay. Nick Nurse and the staff and the organization. Said his family was overjoyed. Didn't really consider other teams. Wanted to be with Raptors.
