Why the Swedish Model for Fighting COVID-19 Is a Disaster | Time
Yesterday got talking to an employee at the Sugar Chelsea factory. He said when the employees got Covid, the employer asked them to stay home for 10 days(and paid them to),rather than 7, to ensure they didn't come back and infect others.
They had no staffing issues in this wave.
This is my dentist and her assistant.
They wear elastomeric respirators when the see us patients.
There are massive HEPA units in every room.
They are pretty rad❤️
@AnnaKorhonen3
In New Zealand we have been virus free 8 months out of 10. We live a normal life with big events, no restrictions on groups etc. We wear face masks on planes and public transport in Auckland only as a preventative measure. It is surreal to live here and I consider myself lucky.❤️
Once again as the only masker at my raquetball today I was asked by an unknown lady ”ARE YOU SICK?”.
The same happened last week and I actually left to go to another venue.
Today I had enough.
I said:
Firstly - If I was sick I wouldn’t be here, I’d be home.
1/4
I popped into a shopping center after to pick something up in a store.
Two of the staff were visibly sick, coughing and sniffling.
Who did the other customers, in close vicinity of me and the sick staff, look at worryingly? Me, the masked one.
Good luck peoplez!
Is ANYONE healthy nowadays?
Today:
A business contact wanted to meet me in person, I couldn't, managed to arrange a call.
He coughs violently say he is struck by a 'terrible flu' and has been in very poor health the last month.
Everyone is sick! he said, you too?
-No..

Before I get more odd messages, please, when you read in the foreign press that today NZ has "abandoned its elimination strategy", it isn't correct.
That's the press' narrative, the same media that has been salivating at any chance to try to bring NZ down.
Let me explain.🧵
Bumped into a friend I haven’t seen in 4-5 yrs. She said she had covid 2 months ago and it wasn’t ”so bad”.
We talked a little more about kids, house etc. Then she shared her health lately had taken a turn for the worst - she felt exhausted and unhealthy and she had no idea why.
I wanted to share the contents of my "Covid-19 First Aid" box as some of you have asked.
Note: I'm not a health professional, so please keep in mind that everyone's needs will be different.
But this is what I found useful:
1/6
”Wearing a mask is the opposite of living in fear: it’s facing the facts and braving daily discomfort to treat your own life as worthwhile.”
Thanks to
@TheSpinoffTV
for making space for this message when mainstream media doesn’t❤️
A must read.🙏🏻
We don’t owe you an explanation.
She looked a bit taken aback.
I said: I come here to have fun, and I am sure you do too. Next time ask me about my name or how my xmas was.
She left a few minutes after, hours before the session ended.
Hope ”our chat” taught her something.
Secondly - if you are worried about contracting anything, I presune you have checked with the other 30 unmasked people?
In fact, I’d probably the only one keeping you safe.
Thirdly ~ I don’t know you, and I actually don’t approve of you asking me these kinds of questions.

So we had this leader in NZ. She protected us, cared deeply, was progressive and represented the future.
She was chased out for being too good and was replaced by 3 radical, backwards, climate denying buffons.
Well done ya’ll. Many Kiwis must like subpar standard and misery.
Went to an ENT today. Got a text before saying masks are mandatory at appt. Masked doctor said when I said I mask all the time, “very wise, Covid cases are everywhere right now, people are crazy to think it is over!”
I counted 15(!!) of these plastered on the waiting room walls.
So serious question tweepers - why is masking in the poker and gaming community so normalised?
Please don’t say ”high stakes” when we know doctors don’t wear them.
They must have different personalities, better at assessing risk? Anyone know?
I have conversations like this on a weekly basis now.
We will all have these conversations and people, who know our stances, can no longer be bothered to warn us about them being ill or their families.
Getting sick is the new norm. Warning others isn't.
Good luck to ya'll. ♥️
I am quite pissed off about it. I don’t ask you about your personal preferences right?
Her: Well, masks are ok for bacteria but not so much for virus.
That is bullshit, I said.
Hey lady any time you see a person in a mask, presune they have a reason and do not ask them why.

Despite my diligent masking and precautions, I too succumbed and tested positive to Covid last week.
It was a week of few interactions so origin is unknown and somewhat perplexing.
Perplexing is also governments across the world ignoring Covid - not surprising we are ill.

My mum was a Finnish journalist who moved to Sweden in the 70s. As I child i had to see the harassment that many Finns had to endure. She learnt the language, worked hard and become a manager in a large organisation and fought for the rights of immigrants her whole life. 💪🏻
New Zealand found out yesterday that a lady returning from Europe via the UK, who had been in our quarantine facilities (MiQ)for the mandatory 14 days, tested positive 11 days AFTER she left the hotel.
This is what our government informed us about within one day:

Great news! 📢
New measures announced in NZ today:
- Reinfection: People with symptoms despite having Covid previously need to test and isolate for 7 days if pos+.
- 10 million child size masks to schools(50 masks/child)
- More ventilation funding will be available for schools
Phone convo took 6 mins. I can't understand why he wanted to meet in person when he was so unwell.
I pop up to elderly neighbours with some pie.
Chat for 10 mins until they declare that their son upstairs has a 'terrible' flu.
-Covid? I say.
-No, don't think so.

Adorable picture of Chris Hipkins hugging his kids after his press conference announcing the details of NZ first Omicron case in the community(hopefully historic) in his mother’s garden where holidaying after mum apologised he was late to the press.
He was getting a suit.
Inget land har lyckats bra att få bukt med viruset, sa Tegnell precis.
Nehedå..Varför lever vi ett normalt liv här i Nya Zeeland och har levt normalt i 7 av 9 månader?🤨
Läser inte människan på?
Just saw a man walking into a shopping center wearing a N95 and I did a full head turn and a little ”oh❤️!” in my car.
Personally I think a man wearing a mask is the absolute most attractive trait there is.
Forget the fireman calendars, bring in the masked guys’ one!
Called a specialist doctor to make an appointment. Asked if they can wear masks as I have an immunocompromised family member. ”No we aren’t mandated so doctors will not be, but you can! Plus we still have the screens up in the reception area. Next appointment is..

..at the end of February but we get cancellations all the time as there is a lot of Covid around still”.
NO KIDDING LADY. And your clinic is doing nothing to help this out.
Needless to say I didn’t book.
Hi, some people call me the mask ninja. I live in New Zealand.
I’d rather be a mask ninja than someone who risks her immunocompromised friend’s life, or others.
I quite fancy living a healthy life too without long term damage from a highly infectious disease.
Call me crazy.
Hi I'm Luna I'm 6 from UK and I deserve a chance of a life without chronic illness, disability or death from SARS-COV 19. I'm autistic like my mum and I want us to be safe.. Wear a respirator 😷
Sweden had its first Covid-19 pressconference in 9 months as experiencing another wave currently. Even the laid back Public Health agency FHM seemed a little worried. Flu and RSV are also increasing fast.
Masks were never mentioned as a tool.
Only 3 journalists attended.

Hurray! The travel bubble is formed🇦🇺🦘🇳🇿🥝
We kiwis can go to Australia quarantine-free and the Aussies can come here from April 19th!
See you soon Australia, I am planning at least 3 trips this year!❤️🍾
I went to my hairdresser today. She put a mask on without asking, as well as her assistant.
I then went to a seamstress, she quickly put a mask on when seeing me wearing one.
Then to the veggie store. The teller was wearing one.
Happy Friday y'all.
Small wins, but still wins.
Today I was asked to be photographed at my racketsport for a newsletter.
Sure, I said (reluctantly as I hate photos of me), let’s step outdoors and I’ll take my mask off(windy and distanced). No, he said, I would love to have the mask in the photo, that how we all know you.
So well deserved. Our humble hero❤️
I will be forever thankful to you for giving me, my family and the team of 5 million so much.
We will never have a better leader than
@jacindaardern
in New Zealand.
Jacinda Ardern receives one of the highest accolades
So we know where the person has been,how she got infected, what strain it is, all her contacts are isolating & other people in the community are testing themselves.
All within 48 hours.
When I say
#ZeroCovid
I am not only referring to not having domestic cases but this process.
Jaha, då har man röstat!🗳
Det är en röst för ett parti jag aldrig tidigare röstat på och lika mycket en röst MOT ett parti jag tycker skött Sverige urdåligt, speciellt de senaste åren.

Lastly, I think people are mixing things up.
We have a ZERO TOLERANCE approach towards community cases.
This does not always mean we achieve ZERO cases.
Many countries have zero tolerance visions or policies.
Jacinda:
Here we go again.
The Swedish Public Health Agency has deleted information on the 10% child mortality of monkeypox from their webpage and replaced it with 'mild symptoms'.
We don't want to worry unnecessarily is the 🇸🇪 motto.
This experience made me shelf the plans of seeing a specialist. How did feeling like the weird one with mask in healthcare as well as unsafe become a thing in our healthcare system?
Jacinda said at the press conference the "tail of Delta has been more like a tentacle" and very difficult to beat entirely but we will continue stomping it out.
We are still in lockdown. We are still doing aggressive TTIQ.
We haven't "given up/learnt to live with the virus".
Why is it mostly middle aged men who think they can ask a female about her personal preference and even when clearly signalling “no” this does not stop them.
I’m sick of these people. You annoy me but you will not break me. Even if my tear channels did get lubricated afterwards.
@Ctzen_Improver

I’m in New Zealand, 28 cases today. Today we wear mask and show vaccine passports when we go to restaurants.Anyone travelling abroad needs to quarantine in our 4 star hotels.
I find them tolerable. Even the semi-lockdown in Auckland we did to quash the Delta virus when it got in.
Māori proverb:

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

I feel this explains well why NZ put people in safety when we have an outbreak. The people.
@urbanmel
It is beyond appalling when healthcare professionals are asking patients.
Good reply. Pondered it today but felt the lady wasn’t going to have enough of an etched memory and choose the more uncomfortable, for her, response.
Last month 1201 people died in Sweden of Covid. 50 people a day are dying but Sweden has stopped testing. They are reporting cases once a week.
Photo: A large hospital has ordered some cakes to celebrate the staff doesn't need face masks in the hospital any more.
Unbelievable.
Bumped into a mate of mine, an athlete.
- How are you?
- Oh, terrible. I just had pneumonia for 5 weeks, was touch & go!
It started with some virus, sore throat. Then pow!
Same thing happened in April so think it may have been the same one lingering and flaring up!
We now have 1 case (arrived from Europe)in NZ, tested neg twice in the 14-day quarantine. Used the app & only has a few close contacts. If it grows, we will chase it out like we have before.
#ZeroCovid
doesn’t mean 0 cases at all times, it means striving to 0 cases at all times.
Today NZ recorded only 18 cases in total.
We contained and reduced a Delta outbreak to date.
We are maintaining 56 Omicron cases in our border quarantines so far.
People wear masks, scan and show vaccine proofs but other than that it feels like normal.
Foreign press:
I have just been verbally assaulted. I am so furious, so sad and frustrated.
A guy in his 50s at racketball and I were discussing bad knees and hips and sports. Suddently he looks at me (masked) and says with a smirk:
- you think you will die if you get Covid huh?

Staff at Taranaki Hospital have set up their own clinic to help colleagues suffering from Long Covid.
A nurse said Long Covid made her so forgetful she thought she had early-onset Alzheimer's. She would get in the car and forget where she was going.

"How Queen Silvia became infected with the mild cough is unknown". Right.
She attended the Queen's funeral 7 days ago,stood 2 people away from the Queen of Denmark who tested positive the day after.
Now the Queen has a 'cold' and is covid safe by 'not shaking anyone's hand'.

Also, as Ardern said, and always has, the plan when we slowly open up in February 2022 is to stomp out the virus the BEST we can. We will not end the fight. We will still mask, distance and TTIQ after 90% vaxx.
We now have two detailed plans. One for lockdown, one for re-opening.
The media frenzy comes from one sentence and NZ media probably blasting it out as they have nothing better to do(watch the presser when she responds to them).
We haven't got to 0 cases [yet] with our efforts, she says.
But she also says we will continue to stomp the virus out.
My neighbour just came back from an overseas trip. Got Covid on the plane back.
Had managed to not get it for 2.5 yrs despite working with Covid patients.
Has someone gone on a plane and NOT gotten Covid?
Auckland is in lockdown, wk 7.
We have 8-28 cases/day, most in isolation. We know where most are.
Rest of NZ~free as birds for 5 weeks.
2 wks ago AKL eased lockdown to L3, meaning we can get takeaways, click & collect from stores. Many businesses went back to work.
Media⬇️
The icing on the cake in the presentation was the DG at the Public Health agency FHM explaining the Immunity debt concept - the reason so many kids are sick in RSV virus currently is due to low immunity from ”Sweden’s MANY YEARS OF COVID RESTRICTIONS”.
Today the cabinet was to decide if we're to exit lockdown tomorrow, but with 8-28 cases, they decided against it. Better safe than sorry right!
One rule in lockdown more was eased, people can now meet in parks with ONE other family.
A plan of the exit of our lockdown was shared!
Looks like I was a bit of a textbook case for this information. Positive until day 10, then negative.
But looking at the tests(esp day 6) & the NZ recommendation of ending isolation on day 6, I would most likely been out and about contagious for 4 days,
Keep on testing people!
Kiwi actor Sam Neill:
“I was away from NZ for the 1st year of Covid.
Everyone I'd come across would tell me "you are so lucky, what a great country, PM and response.
I'd do ANYTHING to live in NZ."
I returned to NZ and was struck by how MUCH complaining there was by kiwis.”
To the masked people who endures the smirks & fake coughing, eating in their car rather than the food courts and making big sacrifices not to catch a highly infectious, neurodegenerative, immune system destroying and rapidly evolving pathogen.
I appreciate you. I am one of you❤️
It is Day 6 now, and if I followed my government’s advice I could be out and about with people.
Despite testing positive.
No wonder I got sick in the first place.
Since entering lockdown on March 25th 2020, New Zealand has had 365 doughnut days of no new local cases.
(I hadn't been tracking this to announce the year, I just got curious and looked and it happened to be 365)
We have enough with our shitty media of junior reporters trying to blast every clowns' toilet paper scribble alternative zero brain strategy to hopefully egg on enough people to click on the headline to generate 5 cents.
Let us have a breather, we can't be your Narnia World.
An immunocompromised receptionist at a tiny health clinic that don't mask and have no ventilation whatsoever;
-I keep getting sick!
Me(in mask): You're rebreathing all your patients sicknesses, it isn't strange. Open windows, get a purifier, wear a mask at peaks of Covid/flu.

Sweden had 363 Covid registered deaths/week on average in January.
Now the testing for people being admitted to hospitals is scrapped. Those were Sweden's only recorded cases.
Watch the minimisers go "look at Sweden, no cases!" Cause that will be true. No testing, no cases.
1/2
And publicised a list of ALL places and times the lady had visited and asked all people to test themselves and isolate until the test results showed negative. They also sent out push notifications to all people & businesses who were at the locations and had used the app.
3/
This is a plea to the NZ media.
Please use your power to try to bring NZ together. We are tired of the constant undermining of NZs effort to date, polarising us when we need to get strength and egging on for a cheap click.
You cause immense damage now, please change.
@VFinnishProbs
Jacinda Ardern is equally cool. I am half Finnish and live in New Zealand so tough choice. But Jacinda’s policies are better than Sanna’s.
- Please, you can’t be serious muslims don’t wear masks!
This conversation is ludicrous. (Getting angry)
Him: - Well, at least find out you Swedes have NO sense of humour, guys laughs nastily.
Convo get interupted by a game, against him, which I won, of sheer anger.

@PolycatV
Ludicrous. I don’t believe there are many people with Covid sporting masks out there. These people, fraternising happily at social gatherings maskless with ppl who may have Covid are afraid of the ones that probably are the least likely to transmit any disease. Topsy turvy world.
Masking in Sweden as unusual as it gets. One of the only countries in the world recommending against masks, stating they are dangerous.
🇸🇪declared the pandemic over 3 times.
So her wearing a mask is big statement.
This + her climate activism.
I’d adopt Greta in a HEARTBEAT😍

My neighbour (75 and unfit) was coughing up a lung in the driveway today. Don’t come near me he warned, he was sick.
Covid I asked? Could be anything he said, he caught so many flu viruses this year. It is because we ”had lockdowns” he said.
No it is not, I said and explained.
So, is that correct statement 8 vs 0 really "abandoning our fight against the virus"? Wouldn't all our newspaper not have blasted that news across our own if that was true?
I am reading "eased restrictions".
Funny the world's press is reading "LeT iT rIp"?
Here is Swedish paediatrician Ludvigsson preaching about the benefits of herd immunity for children in 2020.
Here is also a tweet he deleted today after someone may have sent him some articles about the link between paediatric diabetes and Covid - some even published in 2020.
@dgurdasani1
It is outrageous. You should contact the bus company. I did this when a receptionist ”couldn’t understand me” and told me to take my mask off. Got HUGE apologies.
Ps. Some Aussies don’t understand accents, I(a Swede!)had to translate for my Scottish assistant in a meeting. Them:
Media goes crazy!
Did she REALLY admit 7 weeks of lockdown and 8 cases a day is not ZERO? My maths isn't great, but it sounds about right!
Holy! NZ, the teacher's pet no more. Let's tell the world!
@twinmutti
@AnnaKorhonen3
Not weather. We shut the virus out early (March 2020) by closing our borders (except for returnees), aggressive testing/tracing & isolation of pos cases and ALL contacts. We have a border quarantine(14 days) with excellent processes that everyone enters through - 35K so far.
When Omicron hit NZ 2.5 months ago we had 36 deaths, today we have 456.
That is a frightening number and even more chilling if you think of that the number would have been if we hadn't stuck to our elimination strategy for 18 months. We avoided 3-4 waves.
Thank you NZ❤️
The journalists, some coughing throughout the presentation - seemingly more scared of Sweden having new restrictions, which were reiterated several times wasn’t planned - than the fact many babies are in now in pediatric care, cases have shot up & hospitalisations are up by 46%.
Sweden has added 375 Covid deaths in the last 7 days.

Total to-date pandemic deaths in 🇸🇪now exceed 23,000 ~ almost three times that of Denmark and five times as many as Norway.
More have now died in Sverige than in Denmark, Norway, and Finland combined.
The Covid Emergency kit is cracked open and used, 3 air purifiers are buzzing, all doors and windows are open and husband seems to be in the clear so far.
I tested early - at only a tickle/dryness in my throat, and that has also kept family members/friends safe.
Today I was thanked by a person who's immunocompromised wife contracted Covid last week.
He managed to stay
#Novid
, and told me that without my advice, he would have thought just cleaning the surfaces was enough.
He is now an expert on air purifiers, masks and nasal rinsing/CPC.
..I’d like to continue being able to play racketball. Don’t you?
-Well, as I said, had it, was breezy!
- My 5 friends in longcovid beg to differ. I also have a immunocompromised friend who is terminally ill I support so masking not just for me, but for others.
Not a flinch..

Despite it being a Sunday, they held a televised press conference a few hours after finding out.
They also shared information on social media to the public that same afternoon.

@REGENETARIANISM
This rhetoric about being 'mentally ill" needs to stop. My best friend is terminally ill in a horrid disease. Due to this disease she is also immunocompromised. I support her and need to keep safe for her, whatever it takes.
I presume supporting people is the least you do.
I know of so many people with Covid now and despite the few indications that we reached the peak and exiting it - it seems to not be the case.
Schools are just back this week.
NZ withholding the updated XBB vaccines over the large summer wave has also been incredibly foolish.
@Jeff_Jacoby
@BostonGlobe
Dear
@Jeff_Jacoby
there are so many errors in this article that I can't let you skip along with those rose tinted glasses you are wearing.
You neglected to mention the enormous toll the strategy has had on the country.
Firstly, let's start with a recap.
So if Delta can spread from rooms on opposite sides of a corridor when opened at the same time for about 3-5 seconds on 4 occasions at a Managed Quarantine facility in NZ, how do schools around the world think the children are safe with 1 m distancing and hand washing alone?😳
Her: Good advice. And I should probably wear a mask on public transport too?
Me: Yes, buses are the worst for ventilation. You are literally rebreathing other people's air.
Her: But it is so hot!
Me: Better hot in a mask for 10 minutes than getting sick all the time, no?
My teenage daugher just painted this as we are staying in a little bit more to shield during the worst covid wave in NZ to date. I guess
@chrisluxonmp
et al would rather she was out risking her life at a restaurant eating and boozing up to save the economy?
Genome testing, CCTV footage and further investigation revealed the lady contracted the virus at the quarantine facility from another person who arrived on January 9th (2 days before she was leaving) and the strain turned out to be the South African variant.
6/
I am missing some massive milestone events this week so timing sucks - but my primary concern is my health.
I’ve been fatigued and headachy mostly, but I know enough about Covid to understand that even a ”milder” bout doesn’t mean much.
@Sheep_in_fog
Covid-19 is a highly infectious, neurodegenerative, immune system destroying, extremely rapidly evolving pathogen that circulates in the air.
The people who says you ’don’t have to wear a mask anymore’ - will they care for you if you get ill longterm?
- We never know do we?
- Well, I had it and was fine as I am vaccinated. Are you an antivaxxer?
- As far opposite to one as you can come.
- Well, why wear it if you are vaxxed?
- As vaccinations isn’t enough. It may save lives but there is longcovid, 1 in 10 risk and..
2/
..of empathy from the guy.
- So are you going to wear it for the rest of your life?
- Most likely in certain places yes. I don’t find this conversation something I want to continue. I am here to have fun.
Guy smirks.
-Why don’t you just become a muslim??!
