Driver decided to play chicken with our bus today. Miraculously NO collision, no one hurt. We have advice on so many levels with this one, but here's the most important: PUBLIC TRANSIT DRIVERS DO A DIFFICULT JOB AND DESERVE RESPECT AND REVERENCE.
Our hearts are broken. We are grateful to our community for their love and support as we mourn the loss of nine victims of the horrific event of Wednesday, May 26, 2021.

Confirming that:
- Active Shooter at VTA Light Rail Yard around 6:45a
- Multiple casualties, extent of injuries being determined
- Suspect deceased
- Employees evacuated
- VTA service not impacted (trains were in service before incident)
We will be shutting down light rail service starting at noon today until further notice. We will have bus bridges in place to provide limited service while we work through this. The light rail yard remains an active investigation scene, limiting our ability to provide service.
One year has passed since we lost 10 of our brothers at VTA. We keep them in our hearts and honor their memory.

A huge thank you to the

VTA light rail service is suspended until further notice. Bus bridges running along light rail routes. Sunday service schedule (less frequency) May 30 & 31. Thank you for your patience while we navigate this unprecedented difficult time.

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 988 before challenging a bus. Thanks to our driver’s skill, a crash was avoided. SUV driver arrested on charges of felony vandalism.
Since the operator area will be taped off, there will be no access to the farebox or Clipper Card reader. This means we will not collect fares on buses during this time, nor will we collect fares for light rail and paratransit service either.
Service Update 1: Rear Door Boarding and No Fare Collection.
Passengers asked to board through rear doors of buses. Front boarding reserved for ramp use or priority seating. No fare collection for buses, light rail and paratransit service at this time.

We are saddened to say one of our train operators was verbally assaulted today by a pedestrian at the Winchester light rail station. Our driver was not physically injured, but this behavior concerns us and we are working to support our operators.- Please....

Today’s legal order to shelter in place DOES NOT apply to essential government services which includes public transit. VTA will continue to operate bus, light rail and paratransit services. We will continue to keep you updated on any changes to service.

Collectively we are working to establish a new regional Transit Network Management Board.
Which is a very government way of saying: while we may be separate, we need to act like one network for the sake of the riders.
(Not to mention transit’s current existential crisis.)
People are returning to transit. Last month, we hit 47% of pre-pandemic weekday ridership, and there’s interesting data pointing to where our recovery is coming from. Time for a transportation thread 🤓
FYI: Roland LeBrun, charged with making criminal threats at a VTA committee meeting, held on $350K bail, subject to house arrest and ordered to stay away from VTA, including virtual meetings.
Yes, we know CA is opening up Tuesday, but VTA is still under federal regulations to require masks on board. So please hang in there with us until these rules change.

We are very glad to have 76% of our bus ridership back. It's been a long road but we look forward to keep increasing our service and achieving 100% of pre-pandemic levels. Are you on board? 🚌 Where can we take you? 🚍
You can't have a rainbow 🌈 without a little rain ☔. Thank you to our bus operator Tenzin Lama for taking this beautiful picture at the Palo Alto transit center.

A growing number of people, many of whom have relied on transit throughout the pandemic, and more are returning with increased service frequency.
That’s who the he’ll rides.
Who the he’ll rides this device.
@vta
is the worst public transit ever! It’s just a total mess and completely inefficient. To think this is Silicon Valley’s premier transit service is insane.
We applaud and thank our dedicated law enforcement partners. We appreciate all that you do to support and safeguard public transit.
