I’m a black Barnard prof and former CUNY prof who sat in court all day yesterday. I’m profoundly outraged by the disparate treatment of CCNY students and Columbia students. It’s it beyond obvious this some classist racist bullshit.
Do not be fooled by copaganda and do not ignore the way the state is setting up working-class students to be an object lesson for colonial gains. Keep your eyes on CCNY. Keep your eyes on Gaza✊🏿

Watching students get arraigned back to back…I’m LIVID. To be clear: I’m not pitting students against each other—that is after all the STATE strategy—these are all our people/students. We should ALL be outraged. As we should about genocide.
New from a protestor who occupied Hind’s Hall:
Columbia allegedly pressured NYPD to “throw the book” at them, all initially charged with 3 counts of felony burglary.
“It wasn’t until we got called to court that we found out the charges were reduced to misdemeanors” by the DA.
FACULTY at The New School just launched the Refaat Al-Areer Solidarity Encampment.
This comes days after admin called in NYPD for an early-morning raid of a student-led Gaza Solidarity Encampment where NYPD arrested over 40 students.
In our 50 Weeks of Action series, we pay special tribute to our 1968 Memphis sanitation workers. Learn about their fight and how they proved that all work has dignity through the mantra, “I AM A MAN.”

Nothing in my view is more reprehensible than those habits of mind in the intellectual that induce avoidance, that characteristic turning away from a difficult and principled position, which you know to be the right one, but which you decide not to take.

I get a strange inkling that all these Columbia and UCLA students running around yelling “Free Palestine” would not be jumping at the opportunity to do a semester abroad in Gaza.
Billionaire CEOs didn't just reach Mayor Adams in a private chat urging him to arrest pro-Palestine Columbia students, they also offered PRIVATE staff to help NYPD. The Mayor accepted.
Members of the group also coordinated with Israel's war cabinet, UN ambassador and former PM.
Why are the City College protesters being charged with felonies that could land them up to nine years in jail—while Columbia students are facing much lighter sentences?

going to say this as politely as possible:
this is not the time for professors to gain their street cred. the prof to celebrity activist to prof pipeline (re)builds itself via the reification + exceptionalisation of their risks so let’s stop + remember how we got here—students.
