Just placed all my first round NCAA Tournament bets:
Team playing Purdue
Team playing Illinois
Team playing Wisconsin
Team playing Michigan St
Team playing Indiana
Team playing Iowa
Team playing Michigan
Team playing Rutgers
Team playing Ohio St (Max Bet)
Told this classic story to a friend today:
After Craig Hodges won the 3-point contest in 1990, he called out Larry Bird saying, "He knows where to find me."
The next day Bird replied, "Yeah, at the end of the Bulls' bench."
Next level trash talking.
Ryan Fitzpatrick may have single-handedly altered NFL history by costing the Patriots a 1st round bye and the Miami Dolphins 15 years of Joe Burrow. And he went to Harvard. What a fascinating human being.
Kyle Shanahan is now 39-43 over 5 seasons.
You know the old saying you are what your record says you are? That applies to coaches too.
At some point, there are no more excuses. You are just a below .500 coach.
Favorites dominated Saturday. Same scenario happened 25 years ago.
It led to a buddy & I coming up with the great theory: "That can't happen again, let's bet all the underdogs."
To make a long story short, a month later I had to leave the state to avoid a bookie. Good times.
I booked bets from my sons tonight and they took the Eagles.
Before going to bed my youngest said, "You should give us our money for the Eagles because of that penalty."
That kid is going to fit in perfectly with the new age sports bettor. He's already asking for refunds.
Tough loss for USC tonight but the future looks bright. Clay Helton's latest recruiting class is rated slightly higher than Western Kentucky and Tulane.
Just heard my son say in the other room:
"I tried to talk to daddy but he's staring at the wall not really listening. Must have lost a big bet or something."
One day I'll tell him about Stanford-Arizona State and he'll understand.
My son won our family bracket pool. In his acceptance speech he said:
"I picked UConn and Purdue. Everyone else tried to be too smart. Pick the favorites. That's how you win at betting."
Sounds like a guy with a lot of 8-team ML parlays in his future.
Matt Rhule almost became the head coach of the Jets.
The deal fell apart because the Jets didn't think Rhule would hire good assistants.
Instead, the Jets hired Adam Gase who brought in DC Gregg Williams and OC Dowell Loggains. All 3 are out of the NFL.
True story.
When Miles Sanders is healthy, the Eagles can't wait to get Kenneth Gainwell into the game.
When Miles Sanders is hurt, Kenneth Gainwell can't get into the game.
I give up.
It was a great season betting on CBB. Final documented numbers:
Overall: 103-45 (70%)
SportsLine: 29-14 (67%)
Really appreciate everyone who followed along and supported me. Hopefully I helped you win a few bucks this season. See you soon for CFB!
A few months ago it looked like I might collect $12K tonight with a Kyle Trask Heisman win.
Instead, I'm checking the score of Ohio-Northern Illinois every 2 minutes hoping to cover 14 points in a MAC CBB game.
Life comes at you fast as a sports bettor.
Told my son earlier I have Canisius -4 tonight.
He's been following the game on his phone because if they cover he gets more Christmas presents.
It's nice to spend quality time with the kids during the holidays.
Personal news no one cares about:
I'm joining as Managing Editor of Sports Betting.
Excited to work with some of the most talented people in the industry like
@EliHershkovich
. Very grateful for this opportunity.
Great team, big things ahead.
My sons have bets on the coin toss, national anthem and Gatorade color. They're 5 and 10.
Probably won't lead with that when I apply for Father of the Year.
Serious question:
What do you see from Chet Holmgren that makes him the No. 1 pick in the draft?
I know he does some amazing things that play well on social media.
But overall I don't see a guy ready to dominate in the NBA. Maybe I'm missing something.
College basketball teams don't press enough these days. Whenever they do, kids are throwing the ball all over the place.
Nolan Richardson and those old Arkansas 40 Minutes of Hell teams would never lose a game today.
My wife wants me to come outside to see the solar eclipse. I told her I'm busy watching the NC State spring game.
She's mad now but in a few months when we hit a Grayson McCall passing prop, it will all be worth it.
Some people just don't see the big picture.
Just closed my KenPom, Haslametrics, EvanMiya and Bart Torvik tabs that have been open since September.
It's a sad day. Enjoy the final CBB game tonight!
📢 BIG BET ALERT 📢
Two large wagers just came in at the
@BorgataSports
per Sportsbook Director Tom Gable:
* $50,000 on Colgate +9
* $50,000 on Utah State +5.
They have moved Utah State to +4.5 now in that game 👀
Hard to believe NBC pays all this money for Notre Dame football and then hires Mini Collinsworth and Jason Garrett as the announcers.
It's like watching guys call Class B high school football.
I've been holding a Creighton futures ticket for almost a year.
Been holding a Baylor futures ticket since September.
My entire life has been leading up to this moment. All so the winner can lose to Princeton in the Sweet 16 and crush my soul.
CBB Team to Watch:
UMass Minutemen
Frank Martin instantly upgraded UMass' talent through the transfer portal adding multiple players that fit his style of play. Former UConn top recruit Rahsool Diggins is the X-factor. If he hits, watch out.
Prediction: 4th in A-10
Hard to believe this is Sam Ehlinger's last game at Texas. I remember watching him play with Earl Campbell back in the day. He's had a tremendous 50-year college career.
The Chiefs stink. The Eagles stink. The Cowboys have clown coaches. The Dolphins are frauds. The Lions’ secondary couldn’t cover me.
Books can go ahead and set a line for the Ravens-49ers Super Bowl now.
Creighton’s Greg McDermott has signed a multi-year extension, source told
@Stadium
. Announcement expected tomorrow.
McDermott did incredible job this past season with a young team that dealt with multiple injuries. Won 23 games and almost knocked off Kansas in NCAA tourney.
John Cena has granted more Make a Wish requests than any other human being on earth. These are little kids battling Cancer.
People want to cancel him because he said an average former wrestler wasn't very good 11 years ago.
Can't make this stuff up.
I haven't watched Skip Bayless in over a decade.
Yet I always know what he thinks because people who "hate" him are retweeting and commenting on his Twitter posts.
If you want Skip to go away, don't tweet about it for likes. Speak with action and turn him off for good.
My plans for today:
Noon - Sit
12:02 - Pour first drink
4:17 - Watch Alabama-Georgia and wonder why Loyola trails DePaul by 10
6:30 - Eat 2 subs
8:10 - Watch Iowa score 3 non-offensive TDs
9:20 - Pour 12th drink
2:30 (AM) - Lose USC-Cal live bet and pass out in recliner
Pete Carroll should be behind only Brian Daboll for NFL Coach of the Year right now.
Seahawks had the third lowest win total (5.5) entering the season.
Kissed the family goodbye and locked the door behind me.
It's time to bet thousands of dollars, drink 3 bottles of Captain Morgan, and gain 15 pounds.
Here we come March Madness!
If you've never seen Seinfeld, watch the episode where George Costanza tries to get fired by the Yankees.
Matt Nagy is playing out that episode in real life.
52.38% is one of the most difficult numbers for new sports bettors to grasp.
That is the magic number to break even assuming traditional -110 juice
Achieving a success rate of 55% over a significant sample size remains the goal with 57-60 the holy grail over a full season
Whenever I watch a 3-point contest I think of Larry Bird.
When Craig Hodges tied Bird's record of 3 wins, he called out Bird saying "he knows where he can find me."
Bird replied "Yeah, at the end of the Bulls bench."
An all-time great trash talker.
My first wager of the 2023 CFB season:
UMass Over 1.5 Wins (DraftKings)
Nothing says degenerate like sweating UMass football games for 3 months with the bet possibly coming down to beating Merrimack on Nov. 4. Buckle up.
Good Luck!
UNC Wilmington is one game away from the NCAA Tournament. Seahawks are one of the best stories in CBB this season.
They will be underdogs to Delaware in the title game. We wouldn't have it any other way.
The NFL rewarded Jerome Boger's crew with a playoff game for reasons no logical human can understand.
So it's not surprising we hear after a controversial TD:
"They can't call that a touchdown by rule."
Stetson makes the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. And more importantly, we won money.
Stetson +600 to win ASUN 🍻
Might have one more conference tournament play this week.
Placed one conference tournament futures bet:
Stetson +600 to win ASUN (FanDuel)
See some value here with Stetson at +600. Think it will come down to Stetson-Lipscomb for a spot in the finals. Hatters beat them by 21 earlier this year.
Good Luck!
Reggie Miller saying players shouldn't spend energy arguing calls in the playoffs.
Apparently Reggie Miller never watched Reggie Miller play NBA basketball.
The Dallas Cowboys were using analytics to win games back in the 1970s. They just didn’t have a label for it yet
And Judge should ask Bill Belichick who Ernie Adams is. He was a lot more important to the Pats’ success than the special teams coach.
The 30 for 30 on FDU should be out next week.
--Shouldn't have been in the tournament
--Had to win a First Four game
--Smallest team in CBB beats the 7'4 National Player of the Year
If you don't love March Madness, we can't help you.
On vacation and my 7-year-old son comes running out of a store yelling, “They have a Lions hat! They have a Lions hat!”
I didn’t have the heart to tell him that would be the high point of being a Lions fan for the rest of his life.
It was a fun couple of days eating, betting and watching CBB.
What do you say we do it all over again for the next 48 hours?
Got the meatball subs coming for the weekend. I'm old and married. Might as well go down swinging.
Troy Aikman is a former NFL QB who suffered multiple concussions in his career and he thinks the competition committee needs to look at changing these roughing the passer calls.
That says it all right there.
Drake blowing a 7-point lead in the final minutes of an NCAA Tournament game for the 2nd year in a row.
They might want to work on that if they return next year. Just practice being up 7 all week.
My 7-year-old wants to play fantasy football next year. He keeps asking Santa for a fantasy football magazine so he can study.
Last night the kid ahead of us asked for a PS5. My son gets up there and says, "I'd like a 2021 fantasy football preview magazine."
Never been prouder.
This is what sportsbooks should tweet out:
"We decided not to refund anything ever. Why? Because you are all degenerates who will continue to bet with us every single day. Thank you for your business and good luck on your next 7-leg parlay."
Bets placed a year in advance are tough to hit. We made a heck of a run at it. Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way.
Now I have to go to the hospital because I’m pretty sure my right hand is broken. Thanks for following along.
I bet Creighton at 80-1 to win it all next season. Line is already on the move.
Down to 70-1 at DK, 50-1 at Caesars, and 40-1 at FD if you're interested in jumping on early.
Last year I had $20K on the Ravens to win the SB. Lost to the Titans.
This year I had $1K on the Titans +3.5. Lost to the Ravens.
My son: "You should really stop betting that game. You're not good at it."
Hard to argue with that logic.
Here's a sleeper Sweet 16 team in November:
Chattanooga Mocs
Malachi Smith is one of the best mid-major players in the country. If they make the NCAA Tournament, Mocs will be a tough draw.
CBB Team to Watch:
UMass Minutemen
Frank Martin instantly upgraded UMass' talent through the transfer portal adding multiple players that fit his style of play. Former UConn top recruit Rahsool Diggins is the X-factor. If he hits, watch out.
Prediction: 4th in A-10
Going on vacation then it's all football. For those interested, here are my 2024 CFB futures so far:
Nebraska Over 7.5 wins +120
Navy Over 5.5 wins +106
Oregon +1100 to win CFB Playoff
West Virginia +1900 to win B12
Also like USC +6.5 vs. LSU. Good luck!
Dolphins were outgained 473-275, including 345-167 in air. Tua's 62.7 passer rating was his worst of season; he will need to come back strong in KC.
Tua: "We didn't come through and it started with me." Offense scored 20, 10, 14, 22, 19 and 14 against good teams;not good enough.
Hey
@JasonKelce_
my son started playing center when he was 6 and wore 62 because you are his favorite player.
It’s not always easy for kids to buy into O-Line but you helped him see that centers can be team leaders too.
Thanks for the memories and enjoy retirement!
We had middle school graduation today and my son won the prestigious Rose Knox Award for being a leader in the community.
Retirement is down to him becoming a huge success or me hitting a 6-team futures parlay.
@RandleRant
@RobertNLupton
One of the least interesting tournaments I can remember. A handful of good games. First Four set the tone with 3 NIT teams (Virginia, Colorado St, Boise St). There's never a year where 6 MWC teams deserve bids under this format.
