Let me tell you about The Media™
The Media does not sleep a lot. The Media wants to keep you informed 24/7 and would rather be tired than have you missing critical information.
The Media eats erratically and standing up because we would rather be there to take that call.
Please give time off to the journalists who watched and edited this footage over and over again. That was a large part of my last job and after El Paso, Dayton, Gilroy, and many more I needed help. Its a horrifying task, much less without rest and time to process.
Video footage from inside Robb elementary obtained by Statesman showing law enforcement's hour-plus delay in responding.
They edited out the sound of children screaming.

Journalism movies/shows are always like “she’s driven and dedicated and has firm ethics and a Pulitzer but she doesn’t know how to use email and WILL sleep with a source”
Thanks SO MUCH to
@Chobani
for donating $50,000 to help pay off the lunch debt for
@WarwickSchools
, which they've accepted.
Warwick also reached out to me to start the process for transferring the $40,000 we raised to pay off the rest.

A slide show once shown to cadets training to join the Kentucky State Police includes quotations attributed to Adolf Hitler and Robert E. Lee, says troopers should be “ruthless killers" who “always fight to the death."

I moved to CO to start my journalism career. It’s worked out but … I don’t want any JOC to experience what I did. I have so much debt b/c I moved here with no generational wealth backing me & no help so credit cards were the only means to eat/live with my $30K salary in Denver.
I've long been a stan for "is there anything else you would like to add?" at the end of an interview but I've now also incorporated "do you have any questions for me or about how the reporting/publishing process works?" and folks, they usually do 💯
The journalists sharing stories debate is also arguably a media literacy issue too.
Audiences don’t always realize not all newsrooms allow that practice and not all journalists ask if an interviewee has ever been interviewed before to make sure they understand the process.
Journalism: what do you need
Me: a living wage, good benefits, and just general equity within newsrooms and the industry at large would be a great start

J: do you want a water bottle or not
I love the discourse we’re having about trauma and burnout in journalism but I can’t help but think about all the people this discussion is coming too late for.
It was on this day two years ago I found myself asking for the first time if this was really a job I wanted.
IS YOUR CHILD PRACTICING JOURNALISM BEHIND YOUR BACK? Here’s what certain emojis mean:

🥸😣💀🥀 = imposter syndrome
🤯💣🥄🍨= got a scoop
🪡🧵🐦💻= writing a thread
💩📱👹🚮= getting trolled

Did that really just happen? Yes, yes it did.
Thank you
@AbbottElemABC
for the shoutout! We’re excited for potentially more people to “read about that in Chalkbeat.” 🥲🫶

due to ongoing supply chain issues, any child dressed as a journalist for halloween will have to turnaround a daily for at least one local news operation sorry i dont make the rules
Shoutout to all the other final girls of journalism 🔪📰
They can lay us off, pay us poorly, furlough us, and haunt our lives in a host of ways, and we’ll still keep fighting for a better world and industry 💪
Movies about journalists: the big moment of tension/drama is yelling "stop the presses!"
Actual journalists: the big moment of tension/drama is writing directly into the CMS

Oh, Amy, I'm so, so sorry. You'll get snatched up quick. I've never seen someone create photos with such tenderness, emotion and with such regard for their subjects. You deserve better than Alden, and I know you'll get that before you know it
well this is just ridiculous.
their clothes are ironed! they've done their hair! where is the cat hair and the crumbs?! the smudged mascara?! the sense of impending doom?!?!
University officials were notified about a CU Boulder student’s connection to the white supremacist group Patriot Front and his violent posts before he stepped on campus.
Literally all I do as a national news digital producer:
I already posted that online.
That’s not breaking news.
Livestream is up.
Yes, I can share that story.
I am going to rewrite these stories for web.
Stop writing boring headlines for web.
I am not IT.
Everything is on fire.
Literally all I do as a News Director:
No.
No.
Yes, I ordered pizza.
No.
That actually wasn’t our station.
We did cover that story.
No.
No, that isn’t news.
No.
I’ll be right there.
I’ve been called a liar, a loser, and a libt**d, and someone sent me a photo of his phallus but I really don’t care because it’s 2022 and we’re CLEARING OUR STUDENT DEBT BABY
I went to Notre Dame for 2 yrs but it wasn’t the right fit. I was struggling with depression and unhappy as an engineering major. I switched to a smaller, less prestigious college on the US-Mexico border. I met lifelong friends and became a journalist.
Lot of high school seniors who applied early admission to college are getting news today that maybe they didn’t want.
Everything is going to be ok.
Rejection sucks but you can almost certainly end up someplace you absolutely love and get a great education. Hang in there.
Feels like everyone I know who works in media is holding it together with threads prepared to snap at any moment.
Check in with your colleagues, managers, and friends, folks. Worried we’re approaching a mass burnout/mental health crisis in news any moment now.
On our first date,

Today I said yes.
Cheers to forever with my bear, my journo partner in crime, my husband.
My heart.
my husband & i couldn't both be journalists. like, financially, it wasn't possible. he was burned out anyway so he left the career. but he was burned out in large part b/c he had always made so little $
this industry loses so many good people for such stupid and fixable reasons

This is a heartbreaking industry. But it doesn't have to be. We can make it better. But it's going to take all of us ✊
being a journalist is great because there are so many fun stories to tell and so many cool people to meet in all sorts of communities but then of course there are also the horrors
brb writing the local news tv show I always wanted: a small but scrappy bunch of people writing about waffle stacking and zoo drama and red light cameras and no one sleeps with anyone questionable. Humor and chaos ensue. The hedge fund dies at the end (yes the whole thing)
show extra support and care for your LGBTQIA journalists today. there is an added layer of devastation, trauma, and pain when you cover an act of violence against a community you call your own

It just feels like a band-aid on the industry again. That workers have to constantly relocate just to find a newsroom to do their job where they will be paid fairly and supported and grow their skills.
Those places should be … everywhere.
Tl;dr moving for a job can be great for your news career … but if you are like me in any way, you might have to move 7 times in as many years, accumulate a lot of debt, be incredibly lonely and isolated, overworked, and underpaid to do it.
I just can’t fully endorse that.
