The journalists sharing stories debate is also arguably a media literacy issue too. Audiences don’t always realize not all newsrooms allow that practice and not all journalists ask if an interviewee has ever been interviewed before to make sure they understand the process.

I went to Notre Dame for 2 yrs but it wasn’t the right fit. I was struggling with depression and unhappy as an engineering major. I switched to a smaller, less prestigious college on the US-Mexico border. I met lifelong friends and became a journalist.

It just feels like a band-aid on the industry again. That workers have to constantly relocate just to find a newsroom to do their job where they will be paid fairly and supported and grow their skills. Those places should be … everywhere.

Tl;dr moving for a job can be great for your news career … but if you are like me in any way, you might have to move 7 times in as many years, accumulate a lot of debt, be incredibly lonely and isolated, overworked, and underpaid to do it. I just can’t fully endorse that.
