#FelixNussbaum was born #onthisday to a Jewish family in Germany, in 1904 & was murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944. Amazingly, he continued to paint throughout his life; his surviving works remain a testament to the horrors of Nazi oppression & the triumph of human spirit.

On this #YomHashoah , #HolocaustRemembranceDay , we remember Manfred (Fredi) Ehrlich, a teenage prisoner at the camp ghetto of Theresienstadt. He made this pendant for his mother for Mother's Day in 1943. He perished in Auschwitz when he was 17 years old. His mother survived.

#OTD in 1942, the Warsaw ghetto uprising, the largest civilian resistance led by Jews during WW II, began. It ended on May 16, 1943, when the Germans stopped the uprising, leaving the ghetto in ruins. This painting by Michael David is titled "Warsaw":

“Landscape” by Max Pechstein belonged to German Jewish banker Hugo Simon. Simon fled to Paris when the Nazis came to power in 1933. They looted his Paris home, seizing “Landscape.” In 2021, eight decades after it was stolen, the painting was restituted to Hugo Simon’s heirs.

On this day in 1938, violence broke out against Jews across Germany and Austria, known as #Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass). Artists Doug and Mike Starn excerpted a page from the diary of Anne Frank to create this work in the Jewish Museum collection:
