UPDATE: The injured firefighter, Darren Wheeler of the Durham Fire Department, is out of surgery at this time and is recovering from his injuries. The scene is now being handled as a search and rescue operation.

K9 Daro, who was shot Tuesday in the line of duty, is now recovering at home with his handler. We want to thank everyone who assisted in finding the man charged in the shooting. We also want to thank everyone at Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospitals for their care of K9 Daro.

Squad 4B Officers E.L. Masnik and J.N. Rowsey rescued a tiny kitten in distress this week and the lucky kitten found a new home with Officer Rowsey. The kitten, who was alone and frightened, was rescued near the intersection of Linwood and Dawkins.

Congratulations to Squad 2-D Officer B.N. Vasquez who recently resuscitated a woman at a medical call. Officer Vasquez climbed through an unlocked window to get to the unresponsive woman and did chest compressions until the woman started to breathe again.

We would like to recognize Squad 1B Ofc. R.M. Benfield for putting his life at risk to pull a man from a burning car following a crash. Ofc. Benfield went above and beyond the call of duty by placing himself directly in a life -threatening situation to save the driver's life.

While looking on the Nextdoor app, an off-duty officer (Officer D. Beugnot) noticed that a community member needed help with digging holes for a ramp for his wife. Officer Beugnot immediately went to help the resident out, he also called several of his co-workers to assist.

Happy retirement to K9 Prinz who served DPD for eight years. K9 Prinz has assisted in locating more than 120 fleeing suspects, recovered more than 200 weapons and helped find 5 missing people.

On 03/19/2023, Officer J. Annas, Recruit Officer D. Johnson, and Cpl. R. McQueen responded to a call for a suicide attempt and located a victim who had drowned in the bathtub. The officers performed life-saving measures that undoubtedly saved the victim's life. Thank you!

We are saddened to share the news of the passing of retired DPD K9 Ulix. He passed away surrounded by his family and the staff of Bahama Road Veterinary Clinic after several months battling an illness. K9 Ulix joined the DPD in 2010 and worked on patrol until he retired in 2018.

Durham Police officers are investigating a report of shots being fired at Southpoint Mall. A preliminary investigation revealed that no shots were fired. There are a few minor injuries being reported. Everyone is asked to avoid the area as police continue to investigate.

12/27/22 Officers Heustis and Quattro responded to a cardiac arrest of an infant. Without hesitation, Ofc. Heustis administered CPR while Ofc. Quattro applied AED pads. Doctors were able to regain a pulse at the hospital. The officers helped save this child’s life. Amazing work!

DPD continues to address illegal dirt bike and ATV operators. This unlawful behavior will not be tolerated. DPD has arrested illegal dirt bike operators and seized multiple dirt bikes, recovering one stolen bike. The investigation continues, and more charges are forthcoming.

District 4 recognizes Ofc Mangum as Officer of the Month for August 2023. In August 2023, Officer Mangum responded to two suicide threats. He built a rapport with the individuals, offering mental health services and convincing them to seek mental health treatment voluntarily.

911 Communications received a call that someone riding a bicycle had fallen off their bike and was unresponsive. Ofc. Baker arrived on the scene and found the person with no pulse and was not breathing. He immediately began administering chest compressions, saving their life.

A person was preparing to jump from the top of a parking deck. HEART/COR teams responded with Offenburg. They were not making any leeway. When the person was distracted, Offenburg pulled them off the ledge, saving the person’s life while also putting his own life on the line.

It is with sadness that we announce that retired DPD K9 Fife passed away May 19, surrounded by his family. K9 Fife was a 10-year-old male German Shepard who joined the DPD in May 2010 and was assigned to Officer J.J. McDonough. Fife retired on May 2, 2017.
