Today was Julio Rodriguez's 80th career game. How does he stack up to Griffey through his 1st 80 games?
Ken Griffey Jr.'s 1st 80 games: .285/.348/.468 (.816 OPS) 13 HR, 41 RBI, 26 XBH, 11 SB
Julio Rodriguez's 1st 80 games: .277/.337/.483 (.820 OPS), 14 HR, 41 RBI, 32 XBH, 20 SB
Anthony Bass, who tweeted the other day about how Toronto fans didn't forget the M's celebration after a 4-game sweep in July, has apparently deleted/deactivated his Twitter account.
Julio said he and Ohtani talked a bit during the week. When asked questions they asked each other, he said "Secret. You can't know everything in life." lol
When asked about Geno-Waldron and offense running smooth, Carroll dropped this:
"Geno's going off the wristband, which is a big help. It's smoothed things out, sped things up, cleaned things up...We never did that before. There was resistance to that, so we didn't do it before."
"This is about Russell Wilson wanting to win. This isn't about Wilson wanting to leave Seattle. This isn't him not wanting to be a Seahawk and (finishing his future) here. He wants to win. He's done sitting back and wishing and hoping for things to change,"
@jtheaps9
on Wilson.
The last time the Mariners played in Toronto:
-No Luis Castillo on roster
-Ray didn't travel
-Muñoz hadn't taken off yet
-Haniger was out
-Julio had just 2 home runs
-Kelenic just demoted, Raleigh just promoted (and had just 2 homers like Julio)
-No Santana
-Souza started 2 games
Two years ago today, the
#Mariners
made a deal with the Padres, acquiring Ty France, Andrés Muñoz, Taylor Trammell and Luis Torrens from the San Diego Padres for Austin Nola, Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla.
For the first time this year, the Mariners face off with Cole Irvin, the guy who last year said "a team like that shouldn't be putting up 10 hits on me or anyone." He started five games vs Seattle in 2021, going 0-5 with a 8.69 ERA, 2.288 WHIP and 19 ER in 19 2/3 innings.
Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch, Doug Baldwin, Sidney Rice, Thomas Rawls and 12 Flag raiser K.J. Wright are all former Seahawks I've seen on the field pregame today.
Asked Lock about this moment and he just gushed about how Geno supported him these 2 weeks. Said before the 2 minute drill that Geno was hyping him up and telling him he's the best player on the field.
Jarred Kelenic's first 3 games since his recent promotion: 5-12 (.417) with 1 HR, 3 2B, 2 RBI and 4 runs scored. And one helluva toss from right field to keep a runner out of scoring position to start an inning.
The Blue Jays' "home away from home" has not been their friend these last few years.
They're now 2-10 at T-Mobile Park since 2019 and have lost each of their last four series in Seattle.
Jays now 8-18 against the M's since 2019, including the playoffs.
Marco Gonzales in 2018 on Jays invading Seattle: “I take that personally when a team comes in here and brings their faithful fans and their muddy shoes and stomps on our carpet and takes a dump on our dining room table."
M's have dumped on Toronto's table courtesy of Big Dumper.
Carroll said the Hawks have already had people out in Germany -- including Marshawn Lynch -- to get a lay of the land and help the team plan out the trip and schedule and everything.
No dingers for Big Dumper but: 3 hits and a walk and 3 runs scored, including the game-winner. What a 2-game series for him.
And what an 8-day stretch! Holy moly.
Means a few things.
1) M's can't clinch tomorrow (was unlikely anyways). Only Sunday.
2) M's face elimination with a loss and Houston win tomorrow.
3) This still leaves the door open for the M's, Astros and Rangers to tie at 89 wins, which would give M's the West (insane).
Cal Raleigh not only leads MLB in home runs by a catcher this year with 26 (which set a M's franchise record AND notably, 25 have been since May 15), but he's second in baseball in runners caught stealing with 24 with the third-best caught stealing % in MLB at 32%.
Mariners have won:
-8 in a row
-11 of 12 since Santana joined the roster
-11 of 13 since the fight in Anaheim
-16 of 19 since losing 4 of 5 to LAA at home
Dipoto shared the story of when he first met Julio. Said they were in Peoria and Dipoto was on the elliptical and Julio walked up, stood in front of the machine, reached his hand out and said, "Jefe, I'm Julio."
Fast forward 48 hours and Julio's deal gets reported and made official. Castillo's agent then called the team and said, per Dipoto, "Luis is fired up."
Dipoto: "He said, 'This is the place I want to be, this team wants to win.' And we got a deal done shortly thereafter."
Wow what's this? The OKC Thunder are 28th in attendance for both amount of fans AND percentage of the arena filled? 28 out of 30? I thought OKC was extra supportive of their franchise whereas Seattle wasn't???
Dipoto had an interesting story on Castillo's deal. Said that he and Justin Hollander talked to Castillo's agent 2 days before they announced Julio's deal, seeing whether they wanted to talk now, this offseason, next spring, etc. Castillo's agent said he'd talk to Luis (cont)
Scott Servais just said on our station that Sam Haggerty has brought a "riddle of the day" to hitter meetings every day the last few weeks, and that Jesse Winker probably has the most fun trying to answer it.
In the most important news from his interview on
@SeattleSports
, Scott Servais said the team is probably going to be adopting one of the rescue dogs from Bark At The Park Night into the clubhouse.
Scott Servais says Cal Raleigh has taken ownership of running the pitching staff, is "a creative" pitch caller and is a consistent thrower and doing well at stealing strikes. Servais gave Raleigh a lot of credit for the pitching staff's recent run of success.
George Kirby has pitched 16 scoreless innings on games with a pre-game Felix Hernandez festivity going on (today and the home playoff game) and the M's have scored zero runs total in each of those games. The baseball gods are cruel.
Per Statcast, Julio Rodriguez is tied for second in MLB in OAA (outs above average) defensively at 12 (99th percentile), and LEADS all MLB defenders in runs prevented with 11.
Also 80th percentile OF jump and 93rd percentile arm strength.
Dude is having a Gold Glove season.
Tip for those watching the game on YouTube, if you click the settings bar and click "audio track," you can change the audio to the Mariners Radio broadcast of Rick Rizzs and Dave Sims.
The Seahawks had 12 sacks in seven games before Dunlap suited up for Seattle.
After that?
-34 in nine games. (Team finished seventh in sacks)
-31 in the eight he appeared in.
-13 in Dunlap's first three games with Seattle.
That double should be Cal Raleigh's last AB of June. He ends the month slashing .250/.337/.588 (.925 OPS) with 6 homers, 7 doubles, a triple and 14 RBIs in 25 games.
M's playoff scenarios for leaping Houston and Toronto. Each has 3 games left (M's vs Texas, Astros vs Arizona, Jays vs Rays):
M's 1-2 and HOU 0-3
M's 2-1 and HOU 1-2 or 0-3
M's 3-0 and HOU 2-1, 1-2 or 0-3
M's 2-1 and TOR 0-3
M's 3-0 and TOR 1-2
Passer rating when spiking the ball every play: 39.6
Passer rating when targeting Tariq Woolen this season (per Pro Football Reference): 35.8
Yeah, far more than just picks and takeaways.
Quandre Diggs has 13 picks in 38 regular season games with the Seahawks. He has five in five regular season games vs the Rams -- three in three games vs Jared Goff, including a pick-6, and two in two games vs his former Lions teammate Matthew Stafford.
During his show on
@SeattleSports
this AM, K.J. Wright said the accountability level for Russell Wilson in his early years from Pete Carroll "wasn't even" with other guys, such as the defense, and it caused some locker room issues. (cont).
What's made Raleigh's season especially impressive is:
-Sent down early
-Only called back up due to injury -- not AAA performance
-Replaced a well-respected guy in Tom Murphy in leading the M's pitching staff
-27 HRs leads MLB catchers (and M's record) AND all but 1 since May 15
Unfortunately, we here
@SEASports710
lost a legend today as our friend John Clayton passed away. Please keep the Clayton family as well as all those who knew him in your thoughts and prayers.
If you had $15 to start your dream
@Mariners
lineup, who are you picking to have on your team?
Reply with your dream lineups and tell us why you picked those players.
Former Seahawks FB/DL Will Tukuafu has joined the coaching staff as a quality control coach on defense, the team announced today. Tukuafu was with the team from 2014-16
Per ESPN, Cal Raleigh has the second-highest defensive WAR (1.6) among all MLB catchers, trailing just J.T. Realmuto (1.7). Raleigh ranks 1st on the M's in defensive WAR, per ESPN, and is tied for 18th in all of baseball in defensive WAR.
Just imagine if MLB and the owners had, ya know, not waited almost 3 months to talk to the players lol Kris Bryant would already be teammates with Paul Sewald
So Mariners traded Erik Swanson (3 years of arbitration left on deal) and their No. 8 prospect Adam Macko (per MLB Pipeline) for one year of Teoscar Hernández (last year of arbitration before free agency, just turned 30).
Thoughts?
Leonard Williams on
@SeattleSports
said he went through Tyler Lockett to get his new place.
"When I found out that he was into that stuff, I took it as an opportunity to be like if I'm gonna go through someone to get a house anyways, why not help out a teammate in the process?"
"On the night we honor Felix Hernandez, that was a Felix game," Scott Servais said postgame. "It's crazy, isn't it? The baseball gods, they are there. And if anybody doesn't think that's true, they're crazy."
#Mariners
offseason adds (so far): 2021 Cy Young Robbie Ray, 2021 All-Star IF Adam Frazier, 2021 All-Star OF Jesse Winker, 2018 All-Star Eugenio Suárez (who had 31 HR in 2021 and 49 in 2019).
Sam Haggerty in 32 games: .303/.343/.500 slash, .843 OPS, 141 OPS+, 8 XBH (2 HR, 1 3B, 5 2B), 8 RBI, 5 SB (hasn't been caught).
Also posting a 1.1 WAR and played all 3 OF positions, 2B and come in as a pinch runner a handful of times.
The Mariners haven't reached their full potential yet. And no, it's not cause of Haniger or Lewis returning or trade deadline deals.
It's cause they haven't faced Cole Irvin yet.
I had no shortage of good things to say about Luis Castillo's Game 1 start vs Toronto.
I almost have no words for what George Kirby did considering the circumstances and who he's facing. Just clinical, surgical. Stayed in the moment, didn't get hit hard at all. Unreal.
