We received a call at 2AM from an individual who was fighting with their partner. They had been using drugs for multiple days. There was a report of weapons and violence. The caller was scared to call police because he wanted help for his girlfriend, not for her to be arrested.

In 2020, in the span of 2 weeks, 6 Black folks were "found hanging" in trees in the U.S. All of them declared "suicides" by police. One of them was a fucking child. Lynchings continue in 2024. The violence, the anger, the trauma.. it never ends.

We were able to get her into a hotel for a few days before finding a more permanent situation. We didn't get home until about 6am, but the call didn't end there. We maintained contact for months to offer peer support and acted as advocates for her to access to resources.

We established trust and were invited to sit in the living room to hear her story, keeping the caller and his partner separated so everyone could cool down. Eventually we came to an agreement that it was best she stayed elsewhere and we helped her pack her things.
