A marquee episode of Talking Snooker for you. Phil and Nick have been joined by a bonafide great in John Higgins. We knew this would be good, but it genuinely surpassed all our expectations and we can't wait to hear what you think.

What an extraordinary intervention during the first session of the European Masters final from Ronnie O’Sullivan. There truly has never been anyone quite like him in this sport.
‘Oh come on Stephen!’
ITV presenter Jill Douglas doesn’t seem overly impressed with Stephen Hendry’s admission that he’s never seen the women’s world champion play snooker.
Ronnie O’Sullivan isn’t going to comment on other players any more and won’t assess his own performances.
The very best of luck to all journalists and interviewers.
Good to see a couple of the younger lads given the big stage tonight. Higgins and Williams they’re called. They’ll take a while to get to know the other’s game of course but that will come in time.
Video clip from mjt_snooker on YouTube
Empty seats continue to be a factor at this World Championship. Nothing enormously newsworthy. Nothing earth-shattering. But definitely a factor, and an irritation for many snooker fans. Look at this row of empty seats at the front while Mark Selby was playing tonight.

‘Two years of absolute filth and I’m just starting to feel alright again.’
Ladies and gentlemen, the current UK and Masters champion and greatest player of all time…
Hardly a rocket science observation, but Alan McManus really is a wonderful broadcaster. You learn something new - often a few things - every time he calls a match. He's very good company for the viewer too. Top voice of the game.
Ronnie O'Sullivan beats Mark Williams 10-9 at the Tour Championship. As Phil Yates said, what a shame there had to be a loser. Congratulations to both players. Magnificent skills, compelling drama. What a wonderful advert for the game we all love.
What a wonderful story. There'll be a few tears in the eyes of snooker fans tonight as 47-year-old Joe Perry claims only his second ranking title and his first on UK soil. Perry beats Judd Trump 9-5 to win the Welsh Open. Brilliant.
Hazel Irvine will once again be the lead presenter for the BBC at the World Championship. She has now been the Beeb's lead presenter for longer than David Vine. How fortunate we've been as snooker fans to have two such peerless operators fronting our beloved sport.
What a truly wonderful snooker picture this is. The first world final to be played after World War Two. Joe Davis against Horace Lindrum at London's Royal Horticultural Hall in 1946. Davis won 78-67.

Half decent value for money for fans in Llandudno tonight. Gary Wilson misses the 14th red when going for a 147 in the first frame of the night and then goes all the way and makes a maximum 147 in the second frame of the night. That’s 199 maximums now. Who’ll make the 200th?
‘They shouldn't have changed it from eight. It was a prestigious tournament, one table set-up from the first round. That's the way it should have been. They spoilt a really good event.’
Mark Allen goes off message on ITV about the new Tour Championship format.

TURNING BACK TIME: Mark Selby pictured in 1999, the year he turned professional. Selby has become one of the sport's all-time greats, winning four world titles in an outstanding career.

Mark Allen on the Saudi invitational event: 'I don't get involved in any of the politics, no matter where I play. It's just the way I am. I'm here to provide for my family and my family's future and get more money. That's all I'm worried about.'
Top news from

on Snooker Scene that Hazel Irvine is expected to be on duty for the BBC at the World Championship. Those of us in the UK saw again during the Winter Olympics what a truly excellent operator she is. One of the very best in the business.
Hazel Irvine is our latest guest on Talking Snooker, speaking to us at length about her outstanding career and two decades as the main face of snooker on the BBC. We'd love to have you for company as we kick off our autumn season.

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Neil Robertson pictured during their first meeting at the World Championship in 2007. Fifteen years on, these two great stars of the sport meet in a Masters quarter-final. What a match to savour tomorrow afternoon at Alexandra Palace.

Alan McManus says on Eurosport that Shaun Murphy was ‘complicit’ in Stephen Maguire being docked a frame following the infamous ‘chalkgate’ incident twenty years ago.
McManus says that in a similar situation he would have conceded the next frame to level the match.

Whatever happens now, does anyone think Ronnie O'Sullivan's scrapping abilities are somewhat underrated? Sure, nothing beats Ronnie at his genius flowing best. But his scrapping when not playing well has a compelling quality to it too.
Plenty of you questioning the BBC's choice of pundit tonight, a player contesting a Saturday afternoon semi-final working until gone midnight. It's certainly an interesting one and one of a host of talking points we'll address when the podcast returns after the Masters.
It's high time we delved into snooker's magical archives again to bring you a blast from the past. Here's Cliff Thorburn and Alex Higgins, along with referee John Street, before the 1980 World Championship final at the Crucible.

Alan McManus in action at his first World Championship at the Crucible, in 1991. What a brilliant career across more than three decades. And many more years of wisdom to come from the studio and commentary box, no doubt.

Ding Junhui and John Higgins last played each other in Telford in the 2009 UK Championship final.
Ding won 10-8 and was given 276 meat pies by tournament sponsor Pukka Pies. He donated them to a charity in Sheffield.
Because this is snooker, this is all true.
Top TV numbers for the climax of the World Grand Prix final in the UK. More than 830,000 viewers watched Ronnie O'Sullivan's brilliant victory on ITV4. Add streaming and catch ups to that and it should make one million. Snooker remains an immensely popular TV attraction.
It's fifty years to the day since Alex Higgins won his first world title. It's true to say he was no saint, but his contribution to this sport cannot be overplayed. Unpredictable, mesmeric, thrilling, hypnotic. Nobody has ever played the game quite like him. A bonafide great.
Just an idle thought, but could we be heading for a bit of a perfect confluence with O'Sullivan at Sheffield? Trump seems off the boil, Selby has more important battles to think about, Robertson has that funny Crucible record. Are Ronnie fans dreaming of No.7? Let us know.
We are pleased to say ITV have been in touch with more details on British Open:
*Peak audience of 611,000 watched final
*Average of 422,000 tuned in
*Only Premier League & Love Island outperformed snooker on digital TV that evening
*Peak of 350,000 for Reanne Evans v Mark Allen
Mark Williams spoke to
@itvsnooker
and was asked by Rob Walker: ‘Is there a genuine chance you might not be playing snooker next season?’
Williams: ‘No. I’ll be playing snooker next season.’
Williams adds: ‘I’m treating it as this could possibly me my last one (event) on ITV.’
‘I never really say this normally but the crowd have been fantastic this tournament.’
Luca Brecel let the cat out of the bag here didn’t he?

Brilliant to hear the podcast mentioned during ITV’s coverage of the Tour Championship. With a tremendous Alan McManus soundbite to boot. Just to let you know as well, presenter Oli Bell will join Nick and Phil on Talking Snooker later this year.
Ronnie O'Sullivan: 'It's great for Chinese snooker, great for snooker. Congratulations to this young guy. It was a pleasure to play a future world champion today. They're taking the game on to the next level. I can't pot like these guys, they're just frightening.'
A special piece of nostalgia for you here. The 1973 World Championship at Manchester’s City Exhibition Hall. Pictures of the famous old tournament from the pre-Crucible era are not exactly plentiful and this gives us an invaluable insight.

David Gilbert: 'I'm only used to losing speeches, I don't know what to say. It feels good. I'm just relieved. Hopefully I can start playing well and compete in the other ones now. I've got to pick the Mrs up from Mark Selby's party on the way home, I might have a shandy.'
David Vine fronted BBC coverage of snooker for more than two decades. Now Hazel Irvine has done the job for more than two decades. Nearly half a century of Crucible coverage in the safest of hands. Here's Vine pictured in 1997 and Irvine in 2005.

We are delighted to say that new Welsh Open champion
@joegentlemanjoe
will join us on Talking Snooker next week. We'll have so much to ask Joe about his brilliant victory in Newport, along with thirty years of memories on tour and the state of the game today.
Stephen Hendry responded to Rebecca Kenna’s comments.
ITV’s Jill Douglas says to Hendry: ‘Rebecca put you right back in your box there.’
Hendry doubles down on his verdict, saying: ‘I’m sorry but she’s wrong. She should have gone for the pink or the black.’
#TalkingSnooker
'I heard we got some compliments. I also heard I got some stick for not going for a black because I released the blue instead. But yeah, each to their own.'
Rebecca Kenna was far from impressed with comments made by Stephen Hendry during the World Mixed Doubles.

It might seem an obvious point but good on Philip Studd and Neal Foulds for letting us hear this very amusing exchange between Ronnie O'Sullivan and referee Leo Scullion too. It must be tempting as commentators to step in and talk, but often staying quiet is the best option.
What an extraordinary intervention during the first session of the European Masters final from Ronnie O’Sullivan. There truly has never been anyone quite like him in this sport.
Barry Hearn has revealed that he is aiming for a full Crucible by the latter stages of the World Championship. Nick and Phil were joined by the World Snooker Tour chairman for a fascinating hour of snooker chat. Picture from PA.

Rachel Casey is doing a very fine job as presenter on the Eurosport coverage. The duo that came before had a real quality about them too, of course, but there's something softer and extra thoughtful about the coverage now which is pleasing.
Masters quarter-finals:
Thursday:
Ronnie O'Sullivan v Barry Hawkins (1pm)
Shaun Murphy v Jack Lisowski (7pm)
Friday:
Judd Trump v Ali Carter (1pm)
Mark Selby v Mark Allen (7pm)
At this stage, who do you fancy to be lifting the famous trophy on Sunday night?

John Virgo in tremendous form. Just in the last few minutes:
'You remember the old programme Mr and Mrs? This is Misses and Misses at the moment.'
'Mike we all make mistakes... that's why they put rubbers on the end of pencils.'
Ali Carter has won his second German Masters title, a decade after his first, and his fifth ranking event. He's back in the top 16 at the age of 43. Terrific effort from Carter. What a brilliant competitor he is. Your views on the champion in Berlin would be most welcome.
It's high time we brought you another picture from snooker's wonderful archives. Here's Alex Higgins during a clash with Dennis Taylor at the 1990 Irish Masters at Goffs. Please shout out if you're one of the people in the crowd here.

Roll up, roll up. Not to be missed. It's Ronnie O'Sullivan against John Higgins. Two greats of this sport clashing once again. First to six for a place in the English Open final. Aren't we lucky? Live in the UK on Eurosport and Quest on Saturday at 1pm.
Happy New Snooker Season everybody. Ten months of baize drama for us all to enjoy and it starts with the Championship League, which begins tomorrow. We will of course follow every twist and turn of the 22/23 campaign here on Talking Snooker. We'll hope to have you for company.
We've got a very special episode of the podcast coming, with John Higgins speaking for two hours about his incredible life and career. Higgins on Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, his early days, his world titles, his future... and his ban in 2010. Coming soon.

Where do we think David Gilbert ranks among snooker's popular winners? It feels like pretty much everyone in the game is delighted. Anthony Hamilton comes to mind after Germany. This has to be right up there though.
Perhaps the most iconic character in the history of this sport. The unforgettable Alex Higgins, pictured here half a century ago. Remember, we'll have a special episode on the life and times of Higgins later this year.

The UK Championship starts in York on Tuesday. Always a very special two weeks in the snooker season. Live coverage in the UK on Eurosport, including the first round, and on the BBC from Saturday. Enjoy the tournament everyone.
Neil Robertson beats Anthony McGill 6-3 at the Masters. Fair to say that didn't seem like the best of crowds in there tonight. Heckling the referee just one poor example. If you were watching this evening, what did you make of the punters at Alexandra Palace?

Ronnie O'Sullivan against Mark Selby in Telford from 7pm, for a place in the semi-finals. What's your prediction for the match?
So good to see that full crowd in. Gives the night such a big occasion feel. Everyone involved in snooker did brilliantly to keep the sport ticking over amid the pandemic - it was basically a TV spectacle for a year - but these sights and sounds are what it’s all about.
A brand new episode of Talking Snooker for you, as Nick and Phil reflect on Ronnie O’Sullivan’s first tournament victory for 16 months at the World Grand Prix. We’d love you to join us.
