The largest wildfire in Texas history is actively burning today. The Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County is burning a total of 1,075,000 acres across Texas and Oklahoma and is 3% contained.

The Smokehouse Creek Fire in the Texas Panhandle is the largest wildfire in Texas history, spanning the size of Rhode Island. The fire is an estimated 1,058,482 acres and 87% contained.
Today we pause to remember the seven astronauts from NASA's STS-107 who died Feb. 1, 2003, when space shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas following a 16-day mission in space.
Texas A&M Forest Service is opening the Abilene Airtanker Base to assist with potential wildfire activity this week. The two large airtankers arriving in state on Tuesday will be a regional resource, supporting suppression efforts in Oklahoma and Texas as requested.

Today, 195 Texas counties are under a burn ban - the most the state has seen since November of 2011. With drought and rising temperatures, fuels, or grasses, become drought stressed and vulnerable to sparking wildfires.
As trees across the state continue to be weighed down by ice and snow, keep in mind:

More than 70 Texas A&M Forest Service personnel are currently deployed to wildfire incidents across multiple western states including Arizona, California, Idaho and Montana.
Emergency grant applications are now open for volunteer fire departments included in
@GovAbbott
's wildfire disaster declaration.
The emergency grants fund essential equipment that needs repairing and replacement damaged during response efforts. π
Over the past 7 days, state, federal and local fire resources have been extremely busy responding to 192 wildfires that burned 173,559 acres. Our more than 300 firefighters, more than 200 TIFMAS firefighters and personnel from 28 states are positioned across the state to respond.
Significant, or large, wildfires may occur this weekend for the Texas Panhandle and the Trans Pecos including areas near Canadian, Amarillo, Childress, Lubbock, Abilene, Big Spring, Midland and Alpine.

Our firefighting resources are prepared to respond to wildfires as a cold front moves into Texas this week. Today, the fire environment may support increased potential for activity for communities near Amarillo, Childress, Lubbock, San Angelo, Wichita Falls, Abilene and Eastland.
Cedar fever is actually an allergic reaction to the pollen released by mountain cedar trees - predominantly Ashe juniper. They are so concentrated in central Texas that, even if you aren't generally susceptible to allergies, it could still affect you. π
π₯ Donβt park or drive on tall, dry grass. π₯
Grass can ignite immediately when it meets surfaces of 500 degrees or more. Catalytic converters located underneath vehicles can reach up to 1,200 degrees or more under normal conditions and 2,000 degrees if overworked or clogged.
π₯ When debris burning, always check with local officials first and keep your burn pile small - locating the pile at least 150 feet away from buildings. Have a water source within reach and stay with your fire until it is completely out. For more π

A cold front is forecast to move through the state Wednesday night and Thanksgiving. With this front, there is low wildfire potential across the state for the holiday but, you should always be cautious of outdoor activities that may cause a spark - including frying turkeys.

Thousands across the Texas Panhandle received wireless emergency alerts Feb. 26 and 27, warning of an eminent, dangerous wildfire with the potential to expand. The fires initiated the first multi-notification process to be used for a large-scale wildfire in Texas.
Crape myrtles are a common sight in landscapes. Unfortunately, the practice known as crape murder is also a common sight. While winter is a goodΒ time to prune trees, crape murder is an incorrect pruning practice that removes the top of the tree each year, also known as topping.
Texas A&M Forest Service has increased the State Preparedness Level to Level 4 as the result of a significant increase in wildfire activity across the state, potential for large fires and the increased commitment of state and local resources to fires. π

In 2022, our Helping Hands Program provided over 3,500 pieces of used equipment to VFDs valued at more thanΒ $1.8 million, and the Firefighter Property Program helped fire departments acquire 37 excess military trucks with fire departments valued at over $5.9 million! ππ¨βπ
βThe job of our state and local firefighters becomes more difficult and dangerous under these circumstances, and we need Texans to be cautious of any activity that causes sparks and may ignite a wildfire," said Wes Moorhead, Texas A&M Forest Service Fire Chief.
Wildfire response required a lot of resources in 2022, with 402 agency personnel and 4,452 out-of-state firefighters and support personnel from 47 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. 132 aircraft also assisted, dropping over 11 million gallons of retardant.

On Sept 4, 2011, warm, dry air from Tropical Storm Lee which sat over Louisiana, and an advancing front moving in from the west converged over Central Tx producing a very-high potential for extreme fire behavior. That Sunday, at 2:30 PM, the historic Bastrop Complex Fire started.
Desert-willow is a small tree that grows up to 25 feet tall and occurs in West Texas, on dry, gravelly, porous soils and dry stream channels. It is a popular tree to plant in central and south Texas for xeriscape landscaping.

Just as doctors prescribe medicine to an unhealthy person, natural resource managers may prescribe fire for an unhealthy ecosystem. Prescribed burning can improve and maintain healthy and vigorous wildlife habitats and protect homes and communities.
π₯ In 2022, over 2,800 wildfires have burned across the state. Of these fires, 50% were caused by debris burning and equipment use, including welding, roadside starts from cars parked over tall grasses and farm machinery.
