In 1961, football and track star Bob Hayes of Jacksonville was recruited by Jake Gaither to play for FAMU. He dominated track meets at black colleges across the US, but Jim Crow policies meant that he couldn't even attend meets at FSU or UF. Then came the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo.

Renovations to the Florida Capitol over the last few years have been quite emblematic. While the building was once surrounded by dozens of stately trees, it now stands in a sea of concrete, baking in the sun and discouraging citizens from even going near it.

What if I told you that this historic marker has a major error? That FAMU was NOT built on Governor W. P. Duval's plantation? As one of the most important HBUs in the country, FAMU’s foundation story should be told accurately. This thread will do that. 1/ #FAMU #Tallahassee

Over the years FSU has invested considerable effort in cultivating the “unconquered” image of the Seminole people. Which make it painfully ironic that so many streets near the FSU campus are named specifically for people who waged war on the Seminoles. (1/6)

It needs to be said: Tallahassee's city logo has gotten demonstrably worse with every change. In fact, the city paid $45,000 for the 2002 star design. What does that logo have to do with the city? Nothing. It blows. But I'd gladly wear a T-shirt with the 1929 logo.

1868 view of Tallahassee from Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. This would have been more or less the view looking west from today's intersection of Myers Park Drive and Governor's Drive. The train would be passing by Cascades Park and heading toward the DOT building.

Lake Ella is a sinkhole, but did you know it has a baby sister sink across Monroe Street? Like so many of our lakes, both are now used for stormwater runoff. The little sink behind the Golden Corral parking lot has also been graded and reshaped.

The Domino's Pizza at 1528 West Tennessee was originally the first franchise of Royal Castle, a burger/breakfast joint opened in January 1969. In 1976 Carvel Ice Cream took over the space, followed by Pronto Pizza in the early 1980s, followed by Domino's.

The nice thing about St. Patrick's Day locally is that many of our lakes are so polluted with fertilizer and sewage runoff that they're already colored green.
