Retired! But still writing about high school sports for the Daily Southtown, and sci-fi/horror movies for Castle of Frankenstein and Scary Monsters magazines!

I Googled around and found a story that said the dog was bitten in the leg and needed treatment, but survived. The man had bite marks as well, but was OK. I'll just hope that story is right.
At some schools, the announcer tones down when the opposing team scores. Last night at Marian Catholic, they stopped play after Marist's Elise Ward scored her 1,000th point, and PA man Michael Blais led the crowd in a large ovation. Now THAT'S class. Well done, Marian nation!
Felt blessed, honored and loved to be recognized before Oak Forest's game tonight against Hillcrest for starting my 50th year covering Southland high school sports...
Down here at Illinois State University to cover Mother McAuley at the state girls volleyball finals. It's surreal to think that this weekend are my final live events as a full-time writer. Where did the years go!
Baranek: Heidi Jedry died on Aug. 12, the first day of girls volleyball tryouts at Marist. Her daughter Avery carried on, remembering her mom’s devotion and courage.
Felt very honored and humbled today to receive this award, especially since it was presented by my incredible boss, Bill Scheibe. I'm proud and blessed to be a member of the Chicago Tribune team!
What a great softball season it's been! I always enjoy it, but this was truly a special spring. I kept track, and the Southtown had 67 players who were featured in a story, a notebook, or as Player of the Week. Thanks to all the coaches and kids who were so much fun to be around!
Just thinking to myself how this might be the 2 most fun teams I have ever covered in one state championship weekend. Then I looked it up. This is the first state softball finals weekend where I have covered TWO state champions. Lemont and Marist, I salute you!
The "R" thing isn't happening for a little while yet, but it was so awesome and humbling to have the Sandburg softball coach Lauren Meister hand me this before today's game at Lincoln-Way East. The Sandburg shop class made it. It's beautiful! Thank you so much!
Total class in victory. Totally gracious in defeat. The whole way, they had fun. That's what I'll remember about these last 2 Marist teams. Here's today's story.
So far this softball season, the Daily Southtown has featured 36 different players as either a main story, notebook subject or player of the week. I think that's pretty cool!
THANK YOU to the coaches and players who made this one of the most fun girls volleyball seasons ever. To cap my full-time writing career with the McAuley/Benet state finals match was incredible. Whatever writing I do going forward, I definitely plan for GVB to be a part of it!❤️
Now that I'm done covering girls hoops, a big thanks to the coaches who helped me out every Sunday with the Top 10 and comments, and let me chat them up before games for feature ideas. Thanks to the kids for being so delightful during interviews. We had some really fun stories!
When it comes to All-Area, there are always more talented athletes than there is room to put them. Especially in softball. I am blessed to tell stories about their high school careers. Congrats to all!
From basketball to a battle for life . What an amazing story ... Baranek: Adversity leaves Lincoln-Way Central's Lauren Kraft filled with faith and resolve
I must have quoted Camryn Lyons 5 times last season saying how great one of her Marist teammates was. But I never told HER story. Well, we're telling it today, and it's a fun one about a leading hitter, a great leader and a wonderful kid. Check it out!
Another member of the 1,000 point club! Mother McAuley's Bella Finnegan hits a three from the corner to reach the milestone. She was greeted with balloons on the next timeout.
Working on all-area softball, and in all my years of doing this I have never seen SO MUCH TALENT. Nearly half of the honorable mentions would probably make the 1st or 2nd team in any other season. If you make the HM list this season, be proud. It's just as elite as the first 24.
HUGE volleyball win for Marist tonight as Kamryn Chaney led the way in a 25-22, 25-19 win over Mother McAuley. Elise Ward, Bella Bullington, Elayna Davidson, Maddie Berry and Emilia Batus also filled the stat sheet. Story will be up later..
Talk about saving your best for last. Seniors Eileen Donahue and Morgan Rogers were among the happy RedHawks who won Marist the Class 4A state title. We talk with them, pitcher Gianna Hillegonds and highlight others in a fun season finale story.
The awesome part in being written about for the first time in my life is that it was done by the best boss anyone could ever have. Thank you, Bill Scheibe. I'm in emotional overdrive this weekend, but so happy that there will be a window open in 2024.
Mother McAuley volleyball players always come back - some to cheer, some to coach. Why? For one, it's a great school with a great community bond. For another, it's shining lights like Jen DeJarld, who keep the program bright. Here's a few observations...
Thanks for the memories, 2023. And thanks to all of you loyal readers who have made this a labor of love for me over the past 50 years. Here's a "greatest hits" collection of stories from '23, before I go back in hibernation until softball season!
Here at St. Laurence for my 49th high school sports fall opener. During warmups I have already been hit in the face with a volleyball. So good to be back!
It's a 3-peat for one of the best players to ever wear a Mother McAuley jersey, and one of the best kids I've ever had the privilege of writing about. I'm sure she'll shine at Michigan. Congrats, Ellie, on a memorable high school career!
Have to give a final high school shoutout to Andrew senior pitcher Kathleen Hester. Her final game as a T-Bolt included three straight strikeouts with the bases loaded and nobody out. The "Hester Hop" has been an absolute joy to watch and write about. Best of luck at Bowdoin!
State champs in Class 3A and 4A. A runnerup in Class 2A. Easily a dozen more teams that were state contenders. This all-area team could well be the most star-studded in Southland history. The talent on the HM list is incredible. Congrats to all, and enjoy!
This had to have been the most dramatic finish to a state final game I have ever witnessed in my writing career. Marist's will to win was off the charts.
Isabel Cunnea made home run history while being one of many heroes for Marist today. Talked with Isabel, Eileen Donahue and Gianna Hillegonds about the win over Barrington, and the joy of playing together in the state finals.
I often tell people how blessed I've been to write about young athletes for nearly 50 years. Doing a list like this provides many shining examples. I wouldn't trade my beat for any other. Merry Christmas to all!
Here's a fun update. This season, the Daily Southtown has featured 59 different softball players in either a game story, the weekly notebook, or as a Player of the Week. It's stunning to me how many games we've actually gotten in despite the weather. Softball kids are tough!
Happy Opening Day to all of our Southtown-area girls basketball teams! Gregg Voss will take good care of you all this season. I may be around here and there to help him out after the first of the year. I will certainly be keeping tabs and visiting! Good luck!
Sage Mardjetko leaves behind quite a legacy as she takes her golden right arm from Lemont to South Carolina. As a two-time Daily Southtown Player of the Year, she certainly stands with the best I've ever had the privilege to write about. Here's her story!
The top 10 teams alone have at least 28 college commits. There are simply more talented teams and players than I could fit. But we'll do our best to highlight as many as we can during another exciting softball season!
The positive impact Marist girls hoops coach Mary Pat Connolly has made on young people will resonate for years to come. May her retirement years be blessed!
I am really loving the front page space Daily Southtown Sports is giving softball. Tomorrow we will have yesterday's Lemont victory, and Sunday? We'll see what happens today between Marist and Evergreen Park!
Sandburg girls over Glenbard West 66-31. Josie Canellis 21 (5 3-pointers), Erin O'Connor 15 points. Eagles defense was phenomenal. No exaggeration, this might have been the best I've seen a Southland girls basketball team play in 2 years. Relentless from start to finish.
Nothing beats great sportsmanship. Marian Catholic coach Nora Zerante graciously agreed to delay the start of the game while St. Laurence coach Teagan Walsh waited for some players to arrive from after-school testing. Awesome.
Saying farewell to one of the most genuine and interesting people I've ever known. Bremen and St. Xavier football coach, Cubs fan and Jeopardy expert John D'Ambrosio always made you look forward to the next visit. May the wine flow in Heaven, Coach D.
The only thing more enjoyable than watching Andrew's Kathleen Hester pitch is talking with her about it afterward. Today we had some fun talking about her hitting as well. Big win for the T-Bolts over Lockport. Here's the column...
Best news since March... IHSA Return to Play plan has Chicagoland athletic directors and coaches eager to go back to work: ‘We’ll meet face mask to face mask.’
What a wild and exciting game in the rain between Lemont and Marist! It came down to a tag on the final play by Lemont's Frankie Rita, the behind-the-plate half of one of the state's best batteries. Here's her fun story...
Watching freshman Quinn Arundel playing varsity basketball for Mother McAuley last night, I felt like when I watched Ellie White as a freshman in volleyball. You see it. It's hard to believe it. But it's real... star... power. Here's her story...
As I was listening to the Iowa coach talk about Sydney Affolter, I was thinking... "Yep. Yep. Sounds about right." I saw all of that hustle, energy, humility and spirit when she played at Marist. Here's an update...
What a brilliant coaching decision. What a resounding response. Mother McAuley's Sydney Buchanan showed her star power before a packed house. Here's the story from tonight's match with Marist!
