Vouchers have been defeated once again in the Texas House. Thank you to all the public school advocates who took action and contacted their lawmakers during this session.
"I think we can all agree there is nothing conservative about taking public dollars and then providing them to people with no accountability for how those dollars are spent or the outcomes associated with those dollars."
In a letter to Gov. Abbott, TASB President Jim Rice asked for flexibility for schools:
• School boards should be able to require masks in schools in response to local health conditions
• Districts should be able to provide a virtual school option, with funding
While attempts to create a voucher program were unsuccessful, the legislative session ended with no increase in per-student funding and no money designated for teacher pay raises, despite a $33 billion budget surplus.
In case you missed it: Despite a $33 billion budget surplus, the session has ended with no increase in the basic allotment and no extra money for teacher rasies.

Texas PTA: The only way families are guaranteed choice and accountability is through well-funded public schools where every parent has the choice to enroll their child, the choice to be engaged in their future, the right to certain protections...
A 2017 study showed that “a perhaps surprisingly large proportion of the best-identified studies suggest that winning a voucher has an effect on achievement that is statistically indistinguishable from zero.”

"Without any accountability or financial incentive, most private schools will deny admission to the costliest students with disabilities. Voucher schemes in other states have done exactly that."
