Mayor Emeritus of Houston, Texas. For over three decades, transforming the lives of people who need a voice โ and making government work better for all of us.
Every time we start moving in the right direction the Governor steps in and sets us back and makes all of our jobs harder. He minimizes the sacrifices of people and businesses. I just donโt get it. st
The City does not control the Texas Power Grid. We do not oversee ERCOT which manages and serves as the traffic cop for the electric grid. That is the Governor and the State of Texas. I know people are angry and frustrated. So am I. st
Within our most diverse city in the nation,

Texas keeps making national news for the wrong reasons: an electric grid that failed systemwide throughout the state and rolling back the mask order when 88% of Texans are not vaccinated. We are better than this. Leadership matters. st
We are working to bring a theme park like Astroworld back to Houston. A company is very interested in creating a uniquely-Houston experience. I expect an announcement within 6-8 weeks.

Today, we are announcing the first three businesses for our cityโs wall of shame who did not comply with the Governors executive order over the weekend.
The three businesses include Spire Club, Prospect Park, and Pour Behavior.
I am concerned people are now treating this virus as if it is yesterdayโs news. 73 more people tested positive and 4 more people in Houston have died. Because there is no vaccine for this virus we must manage it going forward. Please put on your masks in public. st
The filing of the lawsuit by the Texas Attorney General to overturn the election and invalidate million of voters is an embarrassment to our State. We cannot be silent and excuse this behavior and those who endorsed it. This is dangerous. st

We donโt have voter fraud in Texas but we did have massive systemwide grid failure, statewide power outages, bursted water pipes, no water and high electricity bills. Um. Now I understand why some elected officials are trying to limit and restrict peopleโs right to vote. st
What Houstonians must do:
1. Wear a mask 2. Avoid large crowds 3. Work remotely from home 4. Virtual worship service 5. Social distance 6. Stay home if sick 7. Get tested 8. No home parties 9. Wash hands often. 10. Take this virus serious. st
Texas Legislators should immediately stop trying to use renewables as a scapegoat for statewide system failure during this winter storm. We are not stupid. A failure to make structural changes and denying climate change have brought us to this point. st
Let me thank the people in the City of HOUSTON for peacefully marching and demonstrating yesterday and last night. I want to thank our police officers for exercising restraint and their professionalism. We have a lot of work to do but we can do it together constructively. st
DC: where is the law and order with these protesters? And what about the US Constitution? It doesnโt mean anything to these protesters? And Texans should hold Sen. Ted Cruz accountable for this fiasco. st
#Houston
is proud to be home of one of the largest Nigerian communities in the country and stands with Nigerians around the world calling for an end to the violence against peaceful demonstrations.
Tonight, city hall is lit green and white to show our solidarity.
#EndSARS
I do believe that we need a two-week shutdown, at the minimum of two weeks, and I have proposed this to the Governor so we can help blunt
#COVID19
progression.
If we can not have a shut down, then at least step back to stateโs Phase I. This will allow us to reset and reassess.
Too many young men of color are killing each other. Resolving their disputes by pulling their guns and shooting one another regardless of fame or fortune. Crazy. And in a few second a life is gone, families and friends are left grieving. STOP! st
What happened this week is not the fault of consumers. These high electricity bills caused by the PUC and ERCOT should go to the State of Texas. They were forewarned in 2011. st
Astros won in Game 7 against NY Yankees; Astros won in Game 7 against LA Dodgers; Houston Rockets shall win Game 7 against Golden State Warriors.

There are people who have to work all times of the day like first responders/healthcare providers. By the time they are able to get to the store, the shelves are empty because people are panic shopping. Can I ask you to take a collective breath and be mindful of others? st
The Governor is wrong to roll back the statewide mask order which is not supported by the medical professionals, science or data.
@The87thTxlege
must speak up and the people of Texas must hold their leaders accountable. st
The person who smashed a bottle on the head of an employee who asked him to put on his mask causing him to go to the hospital and received 10 stitches has been arrested, booked and charged for assault, bodily injury. Put on your mask or stay home. st
Today I instructed the Houston First Corporation to exercise its right contractually in cancelling the Stateโs Republican Convention that was set to take place next week at GRB.

I value
@deshaunwatson
as a player but I respect him even more as a person. I know he loves this City because I have seen how much he has given of himself and his treasure to people in this City. I am humbled to be his Mayor. I hope that wonโt change anytime soon. st
I am saddened to learn of Ezraโs death this evening. Our city tonight prays for his mom, dad, grandparents, other family members and classmates at this time. They will need all of our support in the months and years to come. May God give them strength. RIP Ezra. st

I have given no order to shutdown the City. If that happens you will hear it from me, the County Judge or the Governor. Short of that, you are hearing rumors. But you should avoid crowds and practice social distancing. st
The numbers continue to move in the wrong direction in this City and in this State. For the first time more than 1500 Houstonians tested positive in a single day. We need a Stay Home Order or at the very minimum return to Phase 1 for 2 weeks. We need to hit the reset button. st
Today, I am announcing that that we will begin issuing citations to people who are not wearing masks under the stateโs mandatory mask order.

The City of Houston boil water notice has been lifted. You may use for drinking, cooking, washing... I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Dir. Carol Haddock and all Public Works employees and consultants for working round the clock. st
Houston loves
@deshaunwatson
and the
@HoustonTexans
. Houston is a great City that is hungry to back our players and team. As Mayor of a City that is second to none I pray we move forward together. st
A photo was sent to me and there are others on social media of crowds n clubs/bars ignoring the 25% occupancy requirement, no social distancing and no masks. I want us to move forward but this will set us back. Starting tonight the Fire Marshall can enforce. st
60,000 people from across our diverse City marched peacefully with the family of
#GeorgeFloyd
and I could not be more proud of Houston. As Mayor of this City I want to thank again our police officers for their restraint, professionalism, and service. st
First they came after peopleโs right to vote. Then they continued their assault on LGBTQ community. Then the attack on educators/teachers. Now wiping away 50 yr of

The massive crowds on the beaches are disturbing especially if you are returning to the city of Houston. These are not normal times and this virus is no joke and there is no vaccine. st
It is my hope that come November, the energy we see today will continue to grow.
The

Justices may have their say.
But, come November, Texans will have their say on who will lead our state.

Instead of spending money to construct a border wall, Texas state leaders should be spending their time and money fixing the Texas grid. The possibility of rolling blackouts this summer is real.

Houston is the home of
#GeorgeFloyd
. There is a real pain because of the way he died and people want to express their feelings and lift up his name. I join them. But to those who want to loot, deface or incite violence in the City where he grew up, that is unacceptable. st
My thoughts and prayers continue to be with

I stopped by the mural painted at Taqueria del Sol on Park Place and placed a lily flower amongst the other flowers and candles placed by Houstonians in her memory.
#COVID19
is still prevalent in our city and our state. Earlier this week, I joined with other Mayors around our state along with Judge
@LinaHidalgoTX
asking the Governor to rethink his decision.
Thank you

@donlemon
for having me on your program last night.
I see where the Governor is coming to Houston specifically the Texas Medical Center for a round table conversation on vaccine distribution. Neither City nor County healthcare Directors are included. Surly this is an oversight. st
University of Texas has put its diversity, equity and inclusion policies
#DEI
on hold. In 2023 in one of the most diverse states in the country that is totally unacceptable and a major step back in time. We cannot be quiet. st
The grocery stores in our city will not be shutting down. There is no problem in our food supply chain.
There is no need to rush to the store as if things are running out.
I am asking Houstonians to buy what you need and think of others.
#COVID19
#Houston
is grateful for the support from
@andrewcuomo

.
It is hard to fathom there is a group trying to throw out the ballots of more than 120,000 people in Harris County who used drive through voting approved by the Secretary of State and Texas Supreme Court. Totally unacceptable. I pray that most people vote Tuesday for change. st
This Texas Legislature passed the most restrictive and suppressive voter bill, the most restrictive abortion bill, on the brink of telling teachers what history to teach. But when it comes to Covid, no mandates, no legislation, just do the best you can. Texans deserve better. st
My father died when I was thirteen, leaving my mother to raise nine children. She worked as a maid at the Rice hotel, and never learned how to drive, but she made sure my brothers and sisters and I were educated.
As mayor, I cannot force you to change your behavior, but I am strongly encouraging you to take
#COVID19
seriously and make some changes to your routine over the next several weeks.
Two years ago, I wrote a letter to
@Lin_Manuel
asking that the Hamilton Foundation consider Houston for its educational project. Today, I am so proud that our dream has come to fruition.

is in Houston with over 2,600 students from all over Houston!
Please pause at noon from home, work, the store, the doctors office for a moment of prayer or silent meditation and ask God in your own way to heal our land. And thank him for what he has done, is doing and will do. Thank you! st
Covid-19 positive cases have been increasing for the last 2 weeks as well as hospitalizations. This current rise cannot and should not be attributable to the mass protest and demonstrators. st
Hospitals are full; non-Covid persons needing a bed are having to wait; there are major staffing shortages; children, adults getting sick; and the delta variant is pervasive. BUT the leaders of Texas spend their time on restricting and suppressing the right to vote. Really! st
The issue is not the leak
#RoeVWade
, but the elimination of a womanโs right to choose. Now you have the right to choose in November. If you donโt reject this radical agenda it will only get worse. st
We are not going to allow looters and people who are intent on causing turmoil in our City. It is one thing to protest against the wrong/the death of
#GeorgeFloyd
. I join you. But some people are intentionally trying to incite confrontation/violence. That hurts all of us. st
There is no major weather system, tropical storm or Hurricane but the power is out on the north side. State leaders should fix the electric grid instead of expending time restricting peopleโs right to vote or telling teachers what history not to teach.
#Fix
real problems. st
There is a video on social media of a person saying she was in a meeting with government officials confirming that there will be a city lockdown this weekend or Monday. All of this is false. I am asking HPD and Harris County DAs Office to investigate for possible prosecution. st
