My PHD supervisor speaks MI'KMAQ to me when we meet about my academic process.
We just spent 60 minutes speaking in our language - how beautiful is that?

Soon to be announced, but here's a sneak peak of an Ikea showroom that I collaborated on to integrate our L'nuwey culture.
Remember, it is not Mi'kmaw art in a space at Ikea; it's Ikea in Mi'kma'ki, our ancestral space.

Our sister Sherise is making her journey into the Spirit world. Last Monday, we just celebrated her 46th birthday. She was the bravest person I know----she managed to survive 10 years more with cancer and now, she is joining our ancestors.
The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaw Chiefs advocates for the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community.
This is meaningful support by the Mi'kmaw Saqmaq in these unprecedented times.
Wabanaki Two-Spirit Alliance is grateful for this powerful message sent to our 2S children and youth.

Iain Rankin speaking French is awesome. And I say this wholeheartedly coming from a language that is IN DECLINE. We want our children & youth to speak Miโkmaq. We can't shame people for making errors in their language, if anything, nurture their efforts.

We celebrate this historic event of raising the first ever teepee at the Halifax Pride. It is a significant cultural symbol for Two-Spirits/ Indigenous LGBTQIA which will be used for knowledge sharing about Indigenous Peoples.
Proper acronym usage:
2SLGBTQQIA+
2SLGBTQIA+
2SQ+ (I shorten the previous)
2S (Two-Spirit)
Remember to place the 2S at the beginning of the acronym in all official documentation, publications, narratives, oral presentations, and in general.
Leo passed peacefully at 1:15 am on this Ash Wednesday.
Our family thanks you for all your prayers. Leo joins our families in the Spirit World.

I've lost 2 doctors in Nova Scotia in 10 yrs. One went into a new direction in life, the other retired early. Each one took me approx. 2 years to find. So, I had to go to my home First Nation for care.
Now, I found an Indigenous doctor who is also Two-Spirit - I'm HAPPY!

Nek'm is an ungendered pronoun in L'nuisuti (Mi'kmaw language). I can use it interchangeably when referring to a girl or boy, woman or man, or even a pet. This stunning medallion was made by Rosalee Doucette of Eskasoni. We teach our kids about the wealth of our language.
We lost another family member on my mom's side. She was 21. She died alone. Chronic social deterninants, poverty, & homelessness took her.
Our families, especially Indigenous women, remain to be the most vulnerable people in our communities.

We led the Halifax Pride Parade with great cultural pride. As a small Indigenous organization, it's meaningful to have a L'nu Ambassador and a L'nu float all in one year.

What a fabulous evening at the Junos, and what a privilege to be a part of a history. Not only did we speak our Miโkmaw language on the Juno stage, but we also presented as Two-Spirited representatives of Wabanaki. Watch YouTube link:
Today, I'll be attending a university senate meeting as the FIRST L'nu (Mi'kmaw) representative of the newly created L'nu Senate seat at Mount Saint Vincent University
@MSVU_Halifax
- my Alma mater.
The seat was created as a recommendation through Indigenous consultation.
Two-Spirit / LGBTQQIA+ in Alberta, we are on your side!
We are here to advocate strongly to protect your RIGHTS. Your provincial government is accountable legally, ethically, and politically when they HARM 2SLGBTQQIA+ through their current change in policies.

A thesis supervisor asked why I wanted to include an Elder on my committee. I provided cultural reasons - because the Elder was a source of knowledge/learning. But the supervisor wanted academic credentials. I argued that they were. Then, the Elder provided her Harvard degree!

Pleased to announce that I'll be on the IWK Health Centre Board of Directors for the next 3 years.
@IWKHealth
. And I have big shoes to fill with the term completions of wonderful Directors, including my little sister
@KaraSPaul1

What an honour!
I spent the morning mesmerized by this man's stories.
He was a pulper, bus driver, teacher, school principle, the VP of the Union of NS Mi'kmaw in 70s.
He is the last living Saqmaw (Chief) of Eskissoqnik. He's an Elder. He still works in the forest.
He's also my father.
When I first got to Millbrook Nation in1982, my fellow 12 yr. old friends taught me to run when we saw a police car drive by. I hadn't understood why because I had lived in Eskasoni where the police were John Leonard & Frenchie. They treated us respectfully. Today, I know why.
I'm appointed as Interim Executive Director of the largest 2S (LGBTQ+) organization in Atlantic Canada. I'm humbled and excited to lead our 2S community in our vast territory (NS, NB, PEI, NL, Gaspรฉ regiรณn & Maine).
Info on Wabanaki Two-Spirit Alliance:
Today was my orientation as a new IWK board director. I look forward to being a collaborator representing community interests (Indigenous, Two-spirits, people of colour, trans health) AND sharing our cultural health perspectives as L'nu'k.

Help me wish our little brother LEO a huge Happy Birthday.
He lives in a permanent care facility because he has Huntington Disease. We haven't seen him since February and today we will have a 30 minute visit to celebrate his 42nd birthday in the parking lot. We'll have cake.
Our niece Shante Blackmore and her bundle of beauty named Kรฉyo Kinap - He is also my grand-nephew.
Kinap is warrior in our language.
Aren't they a pair of beauties?

This isn't what I'd expect to hear. Dr. M. has been working diligently to make NSCAD a more welcoming and diverse community. I have witnessed personally how she has aligned NSCAD & our Indigenous community, which is no easy task. This will be a set back. I'm deeply concerned.

Every Nation has a Buffy. That's not the entire issue. Once Buffys are included as part of our kinship, we consider them family.
The problem is when the colonial system outside of our Nations questions our Nations' self-deternination in managing what identity is. That's upto us!
I'm not a parent, but I have 40+ nephews & nieces, and they're going back to school today in NS. Although I feel it too soon to return to classes, I'd be more inclined to listen to my nieces & nephews' opinions on the matter.
Has NS asked students?
Happy Pride Month
I "came out" various times in my life. I came out as gay in Costa Rica when I was 21.
Years later, I came out as Two-Spirit when I came back to Mik'kma'ki at 37.
I've not come out to my father, yet.
I suspect that he now knows.

The NB Premier single-handedly and deliberately restigmatized NB First Nations in public eye. He also just undermined any weak trust that may have existed between our leadership with his office. How many Truths are needed before he can take any step towards Reconciliation?

The best way to reflect about Indigenous People is to acknowledge our journey and celebrate our cultures.
The first step is TRUTH, followed by one delicate step of RECONCILIATION.
The steps need to move together in a balanced way for healing to begin.

Grouping Indigenous & Black People under one initiative/strategy/program/policy is colonial & simply disrespectful. It doesn't consider each group's distinct cultures. We may share parallel stories of testing our resilience, but our approaches and Worldviews differ. Respect that.
I turned 53 somewhere on my flight from Vancouver to Sydney. I boarded the flight at 11 pm on Feb 24th and arrived Sydney on Feb 26th, 9 am. Very cool.
Elders say that I remind them of my grandfather John Denny [cerca 1940s in his 30s], while I was 52. I know that we shared a love of clothes and shoes.
We informed our families from Eskasoni, Arichat, & Millbrook that our home is closed to visitors to help keep our/their families SAFE. Usually, our home is busy with weekend visitors who shop for the holidays (Sept-Dec). Everyone is cool with it.
