Mostar, January 1994
I was 8 years old; my family and I were living under siege in East Mostar, where we had found refuge and shelter after being “ethnically cleansed” from our hometown several months earlier.
Imagine being a genocide survivor this evening, listening to this, having to put your kids to bed with this going on outside your window. Europe failed Bosnia in the 1990’s and its failing Bosnian all over again.
For all those celebrating “75 years of peace in Europe” today. It’s incredible how little is known about the genocide & slaughter of Muslims in Bosnia 25 years ago. 50,000 young girls/women raped, biggest network of concentration camps since WW2.

I always struggle watching this video, it’s just unimaginable being in this helpless position.

The world or so called international community watched for nearly 4 years as Bosniak Muslims were hunted, slaughtered, raped and kept in one of the biggest networks of concentration camps since the Holocaust.
People complaining about isolation & having to stay indoors....with internet, TV, plenty of food & water. I hope it gives us much needed insight into the plight of refugees living in tents & detention centres this evening without any of these comforts.

There are many in Europe that agree with Serb nationalist narrative that they were “freeing” Europe from Muslim “invaders” in the 1990’s.
Serb soldiers force Ramo to call for his son Nermin. Both were executed. The World enables this ideology to flourish.
I regularly share this video & struggle watching it every single time - it’s just unimaginable being in such a helpless position.

There is something so beautiful in hearing the ezan (Muslim call to prayer) in a place where Croat and Serb fascists tried to erase every single trace of Muslims and Islam.

My family came to Newcastle on 19th July 1994. We fled the war in Bosnia. I was 9 at the time. I missed my home, family & friends. I’d spend days daydreaming of going back. Recently, I found an ‘autobiography’ that I wrote soon after arriving.

The siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, began on this day in 1992.
It lasted for 3 years, 10 months, 3 weeks & 3 days (5 Apr 1992 to 29 Feb 1996)
11,541 civilians killed, 1601 of those were children.
I visited Buckingham Palace last week to receive an O.B.E from King Charles III. I was named in the New Year honours list for my work on genocide and Holocaust education. I spent the morning thinking about what 9-year-old Smajo, who started school in year 5 without knowing….

After surviving the genocide in Bosnia, he found safety in the UK where he proudly embraces his Bosnian roots and new-found Geordie identity.
It’s heartbreaking watching scenes from Knowsley. It’s not the welcome I received when my family came to the UK as refugees from the war in Bosnia. The refugee centre in Newcastle was the first place our family was together since my dad was taken away to a concentration camp.

It’s not just that the world didn’t rescue Bosnians from Genocide - or that the international response was slow. The international community was actually very quick to place a weapons embargo on Bosnia which meant we weren’t even allowed to defend ourselves.

But the people of Newcastle welcomed us into their community. Today I am 100% Bosnian and 100% Geordie (I was never good at maths😜). That's what makes Newcastle a great city: it is a place where we are all the same because we are all free to be different.
When it comes to the War in Bosnia, some people know about the crimes committed by Bosnian-Serb Forces but little is known about the crimes committed by Bosnian-Croat Forces and the involvement of the Republic of Croatia.
Recently, I’ve had several academics, researchers & experts trying to convince me that the war against Bosnia & the situation today is “complicated”.
Bosniak Muslims were hunted & slaughtered like animals.
I’m not sure which bit is complicated?

in 1994, my auntie Emina was killed by Bosnian-Croat nationalists. She would have been 66 years old. She would have seen her 2 boys grow up, get married and have kids of their own. She would have been a grandmother. This tragedy isn’t just about the life that has ended. 1/3

It was controversial to let Bosniak Muslims defend themselves.
The world watched as we were slaughtered for nearly 4 years.
All those countries that supported this embargo ultimately share responsibility for what happened to Bosnia.

Bosnia isn’t in the Middle East. Bosnians weren’t killed by ISIS or Muslims but by Europeans. By so called defenders of “Christian Europe”. Also, who’s on the front lines fighting ISIS - It’s Muslims.
When people ask about tensions in Bosnia they always ask about Muslim extremism. Bosniaks are always labelled by their religious category whereas Serbs and Croats are not. Why is that?
