Christmas can be quite tiring. Tom gets very excited about his presents and rather cross.
So he and Grandpa go for a walk together in the snow, just the two of them. The sun is very big and red.

Once there was a soft brown toy called Dogger. One of his ears pointed upwards and the other flopped over. His fur was worn in places because he was quite old. He belonged to Dave.
All the family went to the market to choose a real Christmas tree. When they had finished decorating the tree they switched on the fairy lights and left the curtains open so that all the people passing by could see it.

Every Christmas, Mum made a card to send to her family and friends. Almost always in black and white, on whatever theme she fancied - some poetic, some merry, some romantic… they were eagerly awaited and proudly displayed on mantelpieces over the years.

Making pancakes with Dad is quite exciting. The most exciting part is when he picks up the pan and flips the pancake into the air and catches it.

Shirley’s much-loved story Dogger was published 45 years ago. We will be celebrating it here this week.
The photograph of Shirley is from a party her publisher held to mark Dogger’s 40th and Shirley’s 90th birthday, where the real Dogger was guest of honour.
Mum and Alfie went for a walk. The puddles in the lane were iced over. But it was thin ice and you could see the water underneath. Between the water and the ice were white frosty stars.

Then Bella did something very kind.
‘Would you swop this Teddy for my brother’s dog, then?’ she asked.
Right away the little girl stopped crying and began to smile...
Then Dave smiled too.
He hugged Dogger and he hugged Bella round the waist.
‘Thank you, Bella,’ he said.
‘Open the door, Alfie’ said Mum
But Alfie didn’t know how to open the door from the inside. The catch was too high up.
Annie Rose was hungry as well as tired. She began to cry. Then Alfie began to cry too.

This week we’re taking a moment to celebrate the characters in Shirley’s books, as Clara says so perfectly, ‘Shirls’ Girls’. Starting today with Annie Rose.
The sun was up early
And so was Alfie,
Out in the back garden,
Before anyone else
Was properly awake,
Not even Annie Rose...
It was going to be a lovely day.

All the house is quiet
Curtains tightly drawn
But someone sings a little song
To welcome in the dawn
It’s not time for breakfast
Too soon to play...
Heads deep in pillows
Underneath the clothes
But all the birds are wide awake

One cold, winter evening Alfie and his little sister, Annie Rose, were all ready for bed, Mum and Dad were all ready to go out, and Mrs MacNally’s Maureen was in the living-room.
This week we will be dipping into An Evening at Alfie’s
Dave’s big sister, Bella, took seven teddies to bed with every night. She had to sleep right up against the wall to stop herself from falling out.
But Dave liked only Dogger.
Christmas was over. All the exciting parcels had been opened... But something else nice was going to happen. Mum and Alfie and Annie Rose were going for a visit to Grandma’s house. Dad had to stop behind and go to work but he was going to join them for the weekend.

‘Now we’re real explorers’ said Mum. The stream was shallow. Alfie and Mum took off their shoes and waded in.
They sat there without talking for quite a long while until it was time to go home. And neither Alfie nor Mum ever forgot that time and that place.

Alfie had a very best friend and his name was Bernard. Bernard was not always quiet and well-behaved, but Annie Rose liked him better than any of Alfie’s other friends.

One hot day Lucy and Tom and their Mum and Dad thought they would go to the seaside.

Alfie was still in his tent when Dad came home from work. He brought out a mug of tea and drank it sitting by Alfie’s camp-fire. Dad told Alfie that he had owned a real tent when he was a boy and had slept out in it all night.

Alfie looked down at his feet. They still felt funny. They kept turning outwards. Dad was sitting on a bench. They both looked at Alfie’s feet. Suddenly Alfie knew what was wrong!

Enchantment in the Garden, the story of an only child Valerie, who befriends a statue of a boy who comes to life, was inspired by summers Shirley spent painting with her husband John in Italy.
One fine summer morning, Alfie went out into the back garden to look around and he found a stone.
By the end of the day, Alfie had decided that the stone had become a real friend and he called it Bonting.

Alfie crept into Grandma’s bed to keep her company while she had her early morning tea. They looked through Alfie’s catalogue of beautiful shiny cars, talking in whispers.

This week we will be returning to the pages of Dogger. First published in 1977, these pages with Shirley’s special letter, are taken from the 40th anniversary edition.

He gave the door a great big slam - BANG! - just like that. Then Mum was outside the door, holding Annie Rose, and Alfie was inside with the shopping. Mum’s key was inside too.
Now the trees stood out clear and black. You could see every branch and twig. And the sky was full of stars. They all stood and gazed.
‘You never see them like this in the city,’ said Dad.

Flirt and flutter and pipe up snatches

Alfie could hardly wait until bedtime.
They had supper in the kitchen, jacket potatoes and baked beans.
Then they set out. It was strange not to be going upstairs to bed but down the garden, through the gate and into the field.

At last they arrived! The sea was huge, almost as big as the sky. It stretched away and away, full of sparkling light. Far out there were big waves.
Alfie stood still and looked. He just couldn’t stop looking.
That night Alfie lay awake until very late. He could hear Grandma in her room. She had put a night-light by the door which made a pattern of stars on the ceiling. Alfie lay and looked at them until at last he dropped off to sleep.
