When I was younger, I used to be so, so impressed by those screenwriters and directors who made it big in this biz at a really young age. Now I’m so, so impressed by those who didn’t. Those with kids, and a day job, and debt, who are still fighting and clawing. That’s impressive.

When I write, I usually keep all the cut scenes in a scrap fdx. And when all is said and done, these are usually twice as long as the completed script. Writing is rewriting, or so I’m told.

Question — how long do you typically spend on a feature? Mostly I’ve been doing true stories so that entails 3-4 months of research / outlining. And then a couple months on the first draft. Another month on the second. But there’s draft after draft that comes after that…

Reading through an old script of mine, and it’s easy for me to see the movies / moments that influenced me. I think that’s all we’re really trying to do. Recapture whatever special feeling we had watching a movie… and give that back to others with our work.
