We will resume operations today. Byrd Visitor Center will be open tomorrow 9:30 – 4:00. Winter restrooms are open and entrance station staff on duty tomorrow. Thanks to our partners and community. We’re happy to be back!

We've got a loooooooooooooong road ahead literally and figuratively! Lots of ice, snow, and sleet on top of lots of downed trees and branches. Crews are working through the weekend, but it will be awhile before we can safely open Skyline Drive.

Dogs are welcomed on all but nine trails in SNP. Pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet for safety reasons! We like their stay to be just as enjoyable as yours. 🐶🏔 Repost: Ellie loved her first visit to our favorite National Park!

The speed limit is 35 mph, so you can roll down your windows, feel the breeze and experience every curve and turn of this beautiful drive. There are nearly 70 overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling Piedmont to the east.

A note about predictions!! To date this year we have had nearly 80 inches of rain, more than 25 inches than usual. We just don't have a recent precedent of this wet a summer and how it will affect the fall, but as you can see from the photos, there is still beauty to be found!

Phased reopening at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23. Old Rag, Whiteoak and associated trails, all boundary trailheads and picnic areas remain closed. Skyline Drive and other trails open from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Entry fees apply; restrooms are limited. More:

Just a quick FYI if you're headed our way! We are experiencing a gas shortage in our area. There is no gas in the park, and limited supplies in the neighboring communities.

Important announcement! Beginning April 1, Shenandoah National Park entrance staff will resume checking identification for annual and lifetime passes. Please have identification matching that of the pass owner to present when entering the Park.

Our pet regs are simple: leash at ALL times, keep bagged waste with you until you find a proper receptacle (not a brochure holder, not a tree, not a trailpost...), stay off the trails where dogs are prohibited (just ~15 miles of 500!!) #preservetheprivilege #followtherules

The South District trail crew works hard so visitors in the Park can play hard. Behind-the-scenes work is their daily job. Currently, they are transporting trees to Meadow Spring Trail to be used for a staircase.

There's a wind advisory in effect until 2:00 a.m. Saturday. The forecast calls for sustained winds at 20 mph with gusts near 50 mph. Use caution while hiking or camping. Be especially mindful of broken limbs and the possibility of trees coming down.

Fall is an important time for Shenandoah’s black bears. Bears will move long distances in search of food that will provide extra calories. This means frequent road crossings, which can be fatal. When you are visiting the park, slow down!

Following National Park Service policy and CDC guidance, masks must be worn in all Shenandoah National Park buildings, effective Monday, August 22, 2022. This change is in response to high transmission rates in the area of the park.

"Look it! It's frickin' bats." Bats are vital to the health of our environment. They're hard at work each night eating tons of insects, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds that grow new plants. Step outside around dusk and take a few moments to look for bats in the Park!

Here's a bit of good news!! Big Meadows and Lewis Mountain campgrounds and picnic grounds are open for the season!! Lewis Campstore is also open. Skyline Drive is open from mile 10 to 5 and mile 22 to 65.5. We are getting there and soon Skyline Drive will look like this!

Eighty years ago today, the road bed for the Skyline Drive was completed. The rise in automobile ownership had led to a desire for scenic drives across the country. The Skyline Drive represented the stunning beauty of the mid-Atlantic and Appalachian landscapes.

On this day in 1937, in just its third year, Shenandoah National Park became the first National Park with over one million visitors. As one of several eastern parks established in the 1930s, Shenandoah helped validate the idea of western-style parks in the East.

Old Rag Mountain and Whiteoak Canyon trails, the boundary access roads, Nethers Road and Weakley Hollow Road, are currently closed by the Madison County Sheriff's Office. Only local residents will be able to access these roads. Please stay away from this area at this time.

On this day in 1933, President Roosevelt visited the Civilian Conservation Corps camps creating the Skyline Drive. The " CCC boys" who worked in the camps helped transform the mountain into Shenandoah National Park.

On this day in 1997, the Park dedicated its first accessible trail! Limberlost Trail, a 1.3-mile graveled walking trail, is lined with benches and mountain laurel, making it an ideal place for birding, exploring, or simply enjoying a beautiful walk in the woods.

UPDATE: We are happy to announce the entire length of Skyline Drive is now open to through access! Crews have completed cleanup operations in the southern section of the Drive from mile 65.5 (Swift Run Entrance Station) to 105.5 (Rockfish Gap Entrance Station).
