We can expand Social Security and give millions of seniors a more dignified retirement just by making sure billionaires and the very wealthiest pay their fair share into the system.
I expect to ruffle a few feathers when I call out the dark money infecting our politics. After all, powerful interests have a lot of money invested, and a big stake in protecting their covert influence operations.
Today the Senate voted on my DISCLOSE Act to try to rid American democracy of dark special interest money. All 50 Democrats voted in favor, but not a single Republican joined us.
Recall that just a few big checks to the tune of millions of $$ in anonymous money propped up the Supreme Court nominations of Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett. Who wrote those checks? What business do they have before SCOTUS?
It's been a long and at times lonely fight, but the consensus is getting stronger by the day: we need to undo the billionaire capture of the Supreme Court.
My Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act would require judges to be more transparent about conflicts of interest, travel and gifts. Shadowy groups that lobby SCOTUS would have to actually disclose their funders and it would establish long-overdue recusal standards.
I want to meet this math teacher: “No one is teaching your kids to be gay,” she told the room. “Sometimes, they just are gay. I have math to teach. I literally don’t have time to teach your kids to be gay.”
My DISCLOSE Act would get dark money out of our politics by requiring donors who spend big in elections or judicial confirmations to identify themselves.
A squid squirts black ink to create a distraction when it’s threatened. This ad is squid ink from increasingly nervous dark-money groups. I go after dark money and a dark-money-funded group puts out a dark-money-funded attack ad to accuse me of being involved in . . . dark money.
If you can, please consider helping me fight back so that I can keep taking on the special interests and dark money groups putting profits over the American people. Thank you so much for your support! We are in this together.
It's official: I'm running for re-election to continue serving Rhode Islanders in the United States Senate. I’ve been fighting to make our government and economy work for all Americans, and there's a lot of work ahead.
In the 12 years since Citizens United, dark money has exploded. Our democracy is getting crushed under a tsunami of slime. We need the DISCLOSE Act now.
In the Kavanaugh hearings, I promised Dr. Blasey Ford that no matter how long it took, I’d do everything possible to get a full & proper investigation of her claims. We now know that the FBI & Trump White House wrongly denied her an honest investigation.
We wouldn’t even be hitting the debt ceiling right now if not for the $1.5 trillion Trump tax giveaway to the rich. The same crew that voted for the tax scam is threatening not to pay the bills they racked up – pushing the economic security of working people to the brink.
Could not be more thrilled to congratulate the next congressman from Rhode Island — someone who will make our state proud —
@gabeamo
! Can’t wait to work with you again, this time as a colleague.
I’m pleased to announce that I will chair the Senate Budget Committee this Congress. I’ll be shining a fearless light on issues that affect families in Rhode Island and across the country.
We need to elect more Democrats to the Senate in November. It’ll be impossible to get rid of the dark money sloshing around in our politics if Mitch McConnell and the GOP retake the Senate majority.

@gabeamo
walks out after the race is called in his favor. He gave his mom a big hug.
He says
@AaronRegunberg
has called to concede and wants to help keep the seat blue come November.

President Biden will have a Democratic Senate – a Senate to protect the future of the Supreme Court, fight climate change, and defend abortion and voting rights throughout the country.
Special interests like the fossil fuel lobby are increasingly worried that people are catching on to their dark money influence scheme. I’ve led the fight against dark-money special interests for years. I’ve been the target of their attacks and smears, but I’m not going to let up
OK everyone - we know control of the House is going to be a close call on 11/8. How close? The path to flipping the House red actually runs through an open congressional seat in deep blue Rhode Island.
I’ve been a one-man campaign against the right wing’s dark money apparatus. It’s a creepy apparatus, funding climate denial, Court capture, and voter suppression. We need to take it on.
Creepy billionaires and Big Oil companies have way too much secret influence over our democracy because of dark money. We have work to do to restore power to the people.

As a kid, I got shots constantly, for everything from yellow fever to plague, because we were a Foreign Service family. Grown-ups today griping about getting vaccinated while hospitals collapse and nurses/docs suffer — well it just blows my mind. Key word: grown-up. Be one.
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has impeccable credentials. She demonstrated integrity and exceptional judicial temperament throughout her confirmation hearings, even in the face of unseemly attacks. I look forward to voting to confirm her nomination to SCOTUS.
My bet: peace was brokered in the war between House of Koch and House of Trump in 2016 by a deal giving Kochs SCOTUS seats (the “list”) and all enviro/energy positions. Guess that deal is over.
The network of donors and activist groups led by conservative billionaire Charles Koch will oppose Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination, mounting a direct challenge to the former president’s campaign to win back the White House.
Protecting the judiciary from corrupting influences is a complicated, important fight and I’m going to keep putting in the hard work until we safeguard equal justice under law.
Why are Republicans so opposed to allowing private companies to choose environmentally sustainable and financially smart investments? You’d have to ask their fossil fuel funders. With

Big Oil has spent millions to put the fix in on the pending WV v. EPA case. Watch this closely — the case is a threat to the government’s ability to do basic functions, like making sure people have clean air and water, safe food, and medicines that work.
In recent years, dark money groups shepherded handpicked Supreme Court nominees through the confirmation process, footing the bill for expensive ad campaigns.
Dark money is a rot on our democracy. My DISCLOSE Act would end anonymous special interest spending in our elections and help shut out foreign influence.
Millions of $ from anonymous donors helped prop up nominations of Justices Kavanaugh, Gorsuch & Barrett. Once they got to SCOTUS, they repeatedly threw precedent out the window to rule in favor of right-wing donor interests – maybe the same ones who helped get them on the Court.
This piece is beautiful. I’d like to laugh but it’s too true to be funny. The wretched dishonesty of the Citizens United decision gets a well-deserved roast.
Climate change is pushing homeownership out of reach in areas across the country. I’ve been sounding the alarm about this for a long time — time to wake up.
With Democrats in the majority in Congress, there’s renewed momentum to pass legislation that shuts off the spigot of dark money. Without avenues for anonymous influence, right-wing donors will find it a lot harder to kill climate action and capture the courts.
All federal judges except SCOTUS justices have to follow a code of conduct that includes a process for determining whether ethics violations occurred. But the most powerful members of the federal judiciary are still the least accountable.
My SCERT Act would finally change that.
My Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act will require SCOTUS to be transparent about conflicts of interest – the justices would have to disclose travel and gifts AND the shady groups that lobby the court would finally have to reveal their funders.
We need to protect the Supreme Court from outside special interest influence by requiring more transparency around amicus briefs — and I have a bill to do just that.

Ever since the Citizens United decision in 2010, a slimy tide of dark money has seeped into our democracy. I’m fighting against the most powerful and wealthy special interests out there to rid our democracy of the scourge of dark money.
When you see idiotic comments made by Republican candidates about climate change, understand that it has nothing to do with fact or reality. It’s how they audition for fossil fuel industry money: “I will be such a toady for you that I will even say this!”
Happy birthday to my friend and congressman,
@davidcicilline
! David is one of hardest working, most energetic fighters in Congress. We’re lucky to have him in the RI delegation!
Roe is on the ballot in November. If Republicans are in charge, they could very well pass a nationwide abortion ban and they’d have complete control over the next Supreme Court confirmation process.
Because there is no enforceable code of ethics for Supreme Court justices, the highest court has been left especially vulnerable to right-wing influence and creepy billionaires.
Meanwhile, Democrats have a strong candidate in Seth Magaziner. Seth is our State Treasurer now, and he's a fighter for the middle class who will defend women's rights.
We have got to close off McCarthy's path to the speakership. If you're looking for a campaign to give to this cycle where your dollars will make a real difference, please consider

Think it’s a coincidence that Republican state legislatures all across the country are passing laws to block voting? Nope. It's a coordinated effort by a small group of dark-money donors trying to protect their own power.
On the 2nd anniversary of 1/6, it’s clearer than ever that our nation owes a debt to the brave officers who defended democracy in the Capitol, especially those who lost their lives in the aftermath. The insurrection didn’t happen on its own – the pursuit of justice continues.
The American people want a big infrastructure bill. We tried hard to find compromise but we can't get bogged down waiting for bipartisanship that just isn't coming. The clock is ticking.
Proud to have the endorsement of
@GiffordsCourage
. Democrats need to win every possible seat in November so Congress can finally take action on commonsense gun safety measures to prevent another tragedy.
American voters elected Democratic majorities in Congress so we could take bold action to address our most pressing challenges, and that’s just what we did with the American Rescue Plan.
After right-wing megadonors spent hundreds of millions to stack SCOTUS with anti-abortion justices, the Court trashed precedent & rescinded the right to abortion 1 year ago. The fallout has been devastating & very real for women who now have fewer freedoms than their mothers did.
Our system allows big donors to pour money into elections without having to disclose to voters who’s really behind the influence campaign.
It’s time to clean up our politics and pass my DISCLOSE Act to finally shine a light on dark money.
Public confidence in the Supreme Court is plummeting as the American people wonder: What else don’t we know about who is quietly paying to influence Supreme Court justices? We need to fix this.
Right-wing groups – perhaps the same ones writing the big checks to confirm the justices – sponsor cases up to the Court, and then through other front groups file a barrage of legal briefs supporting their position, essentially telling the justices how to rule.
The SCOTUS confirmation process has gotten bogged down in dark money, with anonymous megadonors (who very well may have business before the Court) writing checks in the millions of $ to push nominations of handpicked Federalist Society justices.
Coasts matter. Coasts matter a lot in Rhode Island. Please vote tomorrow for Seth, who will NOT go down and join the political wing of the fossil fuel industry.
Democrats went up against Big Pharma and won. For the first time, Medicare is going to be allowed to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs, delivering lower prices for seniors.
Thank you, Rhode Island voters, for trusting us with a Democratic statewide and congressional sweep. I promise you that we will work hard to honor that trust by continuing to build an economy that works for people who work.
With a brilliant legal mind and deep experience in the judicial branch, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will make an exemplary Supreme Court justice. Tomorrow, the nation will get to hear more from her.
Or at least, that's what Kevin McCarthy thinks. His super PAC just dropped A MILLION DOLLARS into RI's 2nd district to support a Republican House candidate who will back him all the way. RI is a small place. $1 million goes pretty far here.
Far-right donors spent millions to capture SCOTUS and fill it with anti-abortion justices eager to shred precedent and unleash Republican state legislatures to carry out an extreme agenda. We need to codify Roe v. Wade into law.
I could not be happier for
@gabeamo
and his family tonight. It’s a historic and hopeful victory and a reminder that beautiful moments can still happen in politics. This is a win for every child of immigrants, for the Black community, and for a new generation of Rhode Islanders.
My Buffett Rule bill would make it so people who make over $1 million/year pay at least 30% of their income in taxes. Those who have benefited the most from what this country has to provide are well positioned to pay their fair share, just like middle-class families do.
If Republicans win the Senate back, they want to raise taxes on working families and again try to repeal the ACA. They’ve released a proposal that could put Social Security and Medicare in jeopardy.
We can't let that happen.
Conservatives have been working to send women’s rights backwards ever since Roe v. Wade was decided 50 years ago. Today, women in this country have fewer rights than their mothers did. I will not let up the fight to pass legislation restoring reproductive freedom.
Democrats passed the Respect for Marriage Act to ensure every American can marry the person they love regardless of what the far-right Supreme Court says.
Now that House Republicans have nailed down a speaker, they've gotten to work trying to: hike taxes and increase costs for the middle class, shield super-rich tax cheat donors, and endanger Social Security and Medicare.
I know that if Rhode Islanders send me back to the Senate, we can tackle climate change before it’s too late. We can defend democracy & freedom here & abroad. We can put a check on corporate power. We can protect Social Security & Medicare by making the wealthy pay a fair share.
