I was thrilled to see the Senate Labor & Industry Cmte. finally pass SB 580 (my
@familycareact
) today, bringing us one step closer to delivering paid leave to working Pennsylvanians – and a competitive edge to our small businesses! 👏
PA Senate Republicans refused to swear in
@SenatorBrewster
despite
@PAStateDept
's certification.
They then voted to remove
@JohnFetterman
as President of the Senate when he challenged that refusal.
This is not how a healthy democracy functions.
Our colleagues in the majority party can't explain away the facts. SB 106 was amended at the last minute to include a proposed abortion ban, and yes, when you say “nothing in this constitution grants or secures....” it’s a ban.
On Wednesday, my father, Emmanuel Tzanakis, was struck by a vehicle during his morning walk in a tragic accident. He put up a valiant fight like he always does, but on Saturday, he peacefully passed away. My family & I appreciate everyone keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.
Legal marijuana is already accessible in NJ, DE, MD, NY, and OH. Why not keep that revenue & business opportunity here in our Commonwealth and
#LegalizeIt
?
This morning, the conservative Commonwealth Court struck down Act 77, ruling mail-in ballots unconstitutional.
In 2019, PA Republicans proudly stood alongside
@GovernorTomWolf
as he signed this bipartisan, nearly unanimous bill into law. Now they condemn it.
Legalizing adult-use marijuana has bipartisan support in the legislature and across PA. There’s no reason we can’t get this across the finish line legislatively or via the 2024-45
#PABudget
process.
PA Republicans' dismissal of
@GovernorShapiro
’s plan to provide menstrual products in schools as *excessive* spending makes no sense. Using $3M of $48.3B (0.006%) to make sure vulnerable students can access the products they need to remain in class is a sound, moral investment.
It’s time for PA’s Republican leaders to acknowledge that this was a fair and secure election and get back to the hard work of addressing the serious problems facing our Commonwealth – like
#COVID
and the budget.
The voters alone must decide who wins elections. Debasing that core democratic principle sets a dangerous precedent. No majority – regardless of party – should hold enough power to sway elections and disenfranchise voters.
What we’re witnessing in this General Assembly and in states across the nation is the notion that when the people no longer agree with your policies, you can change the process, or you can limit the voice of people, rather than let go of your unpopular policies.
The ‘book ban’ passed by CBSD this week is unnecessary, divisive and likely to cost taxpayers a lot of money.
All it does is create a system wherein ONE parental complaint can eliminate THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS’ access to carefully chosen library materials.
This is nothing more than a disingenuous ploy to piggyback on the national conversation about alleged election fraud to gain political favor with an outgoing President and his supporters
This maneuver denies the reality of close elections and temporarily denies representation to the people of the 45th senatorial district while a final, doomed legal challenge plays out.
My constituents have made it loud and clear: they do not support the Senate Republicans’ attack on their privacy and waste of their tax dollars.
Friday,
@PaSenateDems
filed a lawsuit challenging the subpoena.
The reality, particularly in PA, is that voter participation in the constitutional amendment process is much lower than voter participation in presidential, gubernatorial, even state legislative election decisions.
Today seems like a good time to remind everyone that NJ, DE, MD, NY, & OH have made legal, adult-use marijuana available & PA *still* hasn't gotten on board. It's time we
#LegalizeIt
.
Congratulations to
@SenCappelletti
, who is expecting her first child in March! Can you believe she will be the first PA Senator to give birth while in office?! The women of the PA Senate we’re excited to celebrate this milestone and Baby Girl Cappelletti earlier this week.
The constitutional amendment process is meant to be difficult. It is meant to be an exception and not the rule. It is meant as a complement to our three-pronged system of government and not a tool to circumvent it.
In PA, you need a license to drive a car, become a manicurist, own a dog, get married, open a business… why would we want to require any less of law-abiding gun owners?
I’m a NO vote on
#SB565
.
Happy Birthday to my friend and partner in change
@SenatorMuth
. Looking forward to another year of smashing the glass ceiling and fighting for all Pennsylvanians alongside you. 🥳✊
Second Lady
@giselefetterman
has always used her platform to make our Commonwealth a more welcoming, inclusive place for all. Racism and hatred have no place here. We must continue to work towards a Pennsylvania where that truth is fully realized.
This morning, I joined
@CeaseFirePA
to discuss the actions we must take in our Commonwealth to address gun violence. Until commonsense reform bills are passed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvanian lives will continue to be lost.
Happy
#GalentinesDay
to my lovely
@PaSenateDems
colleagues. 💕
So honored to work beside you every day and advocate for a brighter future for all Pennsylvanians. 🙌
The "Pennsylvania Menstrual Equity Act" will ensure that menstrual products are available in public restrooms, particularly in places that serve the young, low-income, homeless, + incarcerated.
It’s time for
#MenstrualEquity
in PA.
25 states will offer period products or funding for period products in schools, but PA isn’t one of them. It’s time my colleagues on the other side of the aisle get on board to change that.
🗳️ 📣 Many of you have expressed concerns that the ballot you mailed or placed in a drop box is not yet marked as “registered” and “recorded” on the
@PAStateDept
’s ballot tracking system.
Don't panic! Take a look at the county + state process ⬇️
I’m honored to have been elected by my caucus to join their leadership table as Secretary. I look forward to bringing the same level-headed compassion, openness and integrity my constituents have come to know as well as a fresh suburban perspective.
I am honored to have been asked to join the Senate Judiciary Committee. We can no longer overlook the stain that allegations of members' misconduct leave. We must restore your faith in the process.
Voting access is critical to a healthy democracy, and we know voting by mail is safe and secure. I'm hopeful an appeal to the PA Supreme Court will reverse this decision in time for voters to exercise their right to a mail-in ballot.
We know that marijuana-related charges disproportionately impact PA'ns of color. And we know that the majority of PA voters across the political spectrum support legalization. It’s just the right thing to do.
We must invest in the home and community caregivers who put their lives on the line to care for our loved ones. Our

🎉The Patient Safety Act PASSED the PA House today!!! 🎉
As a nurse and the prime sponsor of this bill in the Senate, I was excited to join my colleagues and nurses from across PA to celebrate this historic win for safe staffing.
Now, it's time for the Senate to act.
Ultimately,
@SenatorBrewster
won by 69 votes.
A close race does not mean it is illegitimate, it highlights that in a democracy, every single vote makes a difference, and that the voters — not legislators or judges — have the final word.
19 states increased their minimum wage starting January 2021, but PA wasn’t one of them.
On Monday, the
@PaSenateDems
Policy Committee will be meeting for an important hearing on raising PA’s $7.25 minimum wage.
📱 Tune in live at 1pm: .
When women & girls can’t afford period products, many turn to unsafe alternatives like towels or socks, or use tampons for too long, leading to TSS & other infections. Period poverty is a threat to public health, and it’s time we make these essential products more accessible.
Pennsylvania’s $7.25 minimum wage is shameful and unlivable. Period.
I joined
@GovernorTomWolf
and other legislators at
@andpizza
Willow Grove to urge our colleagues in the majority to get on the right side of history and

101 years ago today, the PA General Assembly voted to ratify the 19th Amendment, giving women the hard-fought right to vote. 🗳️
On this important day, let’s not forget that many Black women faced additional barriers + continued to fight against disenfranchisement through 1965.
I voted ‘NO’ on
#HB1300
, a bill
@GovernorTomWolf
plans to veto and one that would introduce new, expensive, untested tech into our election process, create unreasonable barriers for PA's most vulnerable voters, and reverse progress made by the bipartisan Act 77 of 2019.
What’s happening at the US Capitol right now is a hostile attack on our democratic process and must be universally condemned.
My thoughts are with my federal partners and the thousands of civil servants, students, and ordinary citizens who call DC home.
Did you know America’s first 🥨 were made in Pennsylvania? Pennsylvania still makes around 80% of America’s pretzels. From Scranton to the 12th District, we love

If you’re cold, so is your pet! ❄️ PA has laws to protect animals in the winter weather. Libre’s Law states that a dog cannot be tethered outside for longer than 30 minutes in temperatures below 32 degrees.

The House Judiciary Cmte. passed 6 gun safety bills last month &
@GovernorShapiro
proposed $100M+ for gun violence prevention strategies. It’s time for my colleagues across the aisle to get on board to make our communities safer.

Proud to sponsor this much-needed legislation spearheaded by

to protect the privacy of more than 9 million registered voters by striking down Senate Republicans' subpeona to gain access to your voting information. ⬇️
As a bedside nurse, I’ve personally seen the impact that inadequate staffing can have on patient care. Study after study shows that safe staffing reduces adverse events, improves outcomes, and saves lives.

My father came to this country as an immigrant from Greece in 1970. He earned a PhD in Economics, spent many years working for the federal government and proudly watched his son become a county prosecutor and his daughter become a state senator.
