Black Fern superstars Portia Woodman and Renee Wickliffe have tied the knot with beautiful images shared on social media of their special day.
Huge congrats to two awesome players & people 😍🥂
Big steps for Italian women's rugby
🏉25 players have been given annual part-time contracts to allow them to train between 80-130 days with the national team
🏉An additional 350k investment into the national team to prep for the World Cup
🏉 TV deal to show more club rugby
BIG NEWS: BBC will show England's two tests v France. Games on the actual network & not the red button - giving it a huge, rare & welcome free to air platform. This weekend's game is already listed on the Sky EPG so get recording! Well done
@EnglandRugby
In 12 days, the
@Womens6Nations
kicks off. It's Europe's flagship women's rugby event and the biggest women's XV competition outside of the World Cup. So yes, it matters that 12 days out we still have NO idea of KO times or know where we can watch on TV or otherwise /1
6 Nations confirm that every women's match in 2018 will be available live either on television, or streamed live. Highlights programme once again available both on the BBC Network on Sunday evenings in the UK and on RTE on Monday evening in Ireland.
Massive news. The Barbarians men's game is OFF - only the women's game is going ahead today and is being brought forward to 2.30pm. By chance this could now be the biggest EVER standalone crowd for a women's rugby match ...(current record 20k) Huge.
So very sad to hear the news that Kathy Flores has died. The first woman to coach any national rugby team, the first captain of the USA team in 1987 & a member of the 1991 World Cup Team, leading her side to victory, she was an absolute pioneer. Thoughts with family & friends
NEWS: We're beyond thrilled to launch the world's first data hub for women's rugby thanks to a partnership with
@LudisAnalytics
This is the result of a 5-year project to collate results of every women’s 15s & 7s international ever played

English ref
@SaraCoxRef
will make history this weekend when she becomes the first woman to ref a Premiership Rugby Cup clash. She’s in charge of Wasps’ v Northampton Saints on a weekend where four different women take senior roles in the same comp
There are remarkably few women paid to work in women’s rugby so to all those amazing people who do what they do to improve the game because they love it - thank you and keep going. You

Sarah Hunter: Gutted. So proud of the team. We came out fighting with our backs against the wall for 60 mins. We never came up. One result doesn't define the people we are & what we've created in women's rugby. I hope we've given people something to be proud of. Sport is cruel.
Mini thread on why we feel excited to see women's rugby players, especially those who play at the highest level, speaking out about equality, diversity and inclusion this week on the back of the issue around playing kits.
NEW: The England v France game on BBC last weekend received a peak TV audience of 800k. Pretty decent to get just shy of 1m in a lunch time time slot on BBC 2. Reminder that this was the first such game on the BBC network so profile will take time to build.
Peak viewing figures on BBC2 for France v England last Saturday were 723,000 with a further 140,838 watching on iPlayer. This compares with 1M watching snooker on BBC1 and 400,000 watching racing on ITV at the same time.
"When it happened, I felt numb. In that moment, after the red card went up - just totally numb."
In her own words, Lydia Thompson tells us what happened when she was sent off in the the World Cup final & how she got back up again.
A must read.

Significant news for the women's 15s game. The Women's Rugby World Cup will become a 16 team competition (from 12) in 2025. Will open up the game, introduce more tests & improve the event (though undoubtedly standards outside of top 12 will take time to rise)
Before it all kicks off this weekend - a special THANK YOU to everyone who covers women's rugby. Every single tweet, article, graphic, pod, documentary (!), interview & video makes a difference. Together, we're giving our sport the profile our athletes & teams deserve

England captain Sarah Hunter will retire after England's 1st 6 Nations match against Scotland in her home city of Newcastle this weekend - she’s won 140 caps making her England’s most capped player.
Seeing this sign outside a random East London pub has made my day.
Giving the
@Womens6Nations
its own space has created more visibility and the tournament hasn't even started!
@ScrumQueens
@Premier15s
That's three reports out in recent weeks (Canada, Ireland, NZ) which has found serious issues with how women are being managed and treated in elite rugby environments. The common themes throughout should be taken extremely seriously by the entire sport & changes made accordingly.
What we've seen so far today in the
@Womens6Nations
is reflective of investment. England are pro, France are semi-pro - Scotland & Wales are neither. It shows.
England will announce their elite player squad this morning which will include the names of the 28 players who have been awarded full time professional contracts. These players will make up the world’s first ever full time pro women’s rugby XV squad. Historic.
World Rugby have also confirmed who will choose the women’s 15s player of the year. Maggie apart I cannot believe this is for real.
The idea that any of the others have watched the number of women’s test games required to make an authoritative decision like this is laughable.
Scottish ref Hollie Davidson will lead an all-female team for the Portugal v Italy men’s game this month It will be the first time an all-female team have taken charge of a men’s test match & the first time a female referee has officiated a men’s 6 Nations team in a test match.
Not much sums up the disparities between how the NZ and Eng teams have been invested in over the years than the fact that NZ today play just their 100th test, a milestone which has taken them 30 years to reach, while England skipper Sarah Hunter took just ten to win 100 caps.
Ireland's most capped women's player
@cantwelll
hired as South Africa's first High Performance Manager for women’s rugby. A shrewd appointment & a sign of genuine intent that's long overdue.
A quite astonishingly defensive interview with Ireland's director of women's rugby who seems to suggest there are no major issues & that Ire are not in danger of being left behind by teams who are investing more. 🤔
For the first time, women's rugby in India goes "professional". "We made a vow that no player would have to spend a rupee after they receive a letter inviting them to the national camp"

NZ announce plans to officially cap all Black Ferns who have played in sanctioned Test matches. 161 women will capped over the next 3 years. Reunion of 1998 WRWC winners to launch capping project in June. These projects so important for preserving the history of our game.
Not a rugby post, but still good to see:
-Journalist: "How does it feel to be able to be the first team in history that can win all the titles in England?"
-Pep Guardiola: "The first time in men's football. Women have done it already. "
- Periodista: "¿Cómo se siente al poder ser el primer equipo en la historia que puede ganar todos los títulos en Inglaterra?"
- Pep Guardiola: "La primera vez en el fútbol masculino. Las mujeres lo han hecho ya".
We understand that David Nucifora (Anthony Eddy's boss) called Cliodhna Moloney earlier this week to take her to task on using Twitter to air her views. Given the avalanche of squad support now - looks like he's got a lot of calls to make today.
Remarkable stuff on the eve of a Test.
Brave words from Ireland captain Ciara Griffin, who says she and team-mates were disappointed by comments made by IRFU director of women's and sevens rugby, Anthony Eddy, this week.
Eddy has apologised.

Mind-blowing thought - some of the NZ players who won Olympic Gold in Tokyo could next year play in the 7s World Cup, the Commonwealth Games AND the XV World Cup and have a more than decent chance of winning them all. Reminder too that 2022 is huge for women's rugby major events!
Sene Naoupu's red card is rescinded and she is cleared to play this weekend for Ireland. Judgement deemed that the contact was indirect; she was in a passive position and she should have been shown yellow.
Italy's contract news means that Scotland & Ireland are now the only
@Womens6Nations
teams without an official full or part-time contracting system in place for the bulk of their squad.
"Everyone should have equal opportunity.”
England prop Sarah Bern suggests the demands on players at test level are becoming unsustainable for those juggling day jobs and playing.
Hurrah. After much complaining (let’s be honest, primarily from us)
@WorldRugby
appoint a separate panel to judge its Women’s XV player of the year award and appoint people who actually will know who the best player in the world is. Ridiculous it’s taken so long but here we are.

Oh come on
@SkySportsRugby
- you’ve just copied and pasted our exact team, even the player we picked out of position.
If you’re going to nick our content you should at least credit us.
Very very poor form.
And in the end, this has been a transformative Six Nations. Amazing crowds, excellent TV audiences, new sponsors, more players with contracts. England have dominated but that analysis is for another day.
Arguments over? If you promote women's sport, show it on prime time channels, you get massive audiences.
And - hint for sponsors - at far less cost than men's sport... at the moment. But with audiences like this it won't be long before that changes, so get involved now!
ERM....WOW!!!!

For England to have a chance to drive a maul over the line and lose it that way - honestly if it happened in a movie you'd say it was too scripted. But an amazing final and what a journey for New Zealand. They've been magnificent.
Note the part when Tui says that the NZ team contributed to Team GB's fundraising efforts - a reminder of what that group has been through to get to the Olympics and what a massive achievement reaching the final 4 is for GB.
The Kingsholm record crowd of 14,689 looks like being a very briefly held record with news that Leicester have already sold 14,648 tickets for England v Ireland at a ground with a capacity of around 23,000, which makes the world record is 17,740 possible.
Here's to all the rugby Mums.
Playing the game, coaching the game, reffing the game, running the game, supporting the game - advocating for it and making it happen.

This year's
@Womens6Nations
was originally squeezed into a 4-week window because of the challenges in rescheduling the World Cup qualifiers. So now the World Cup is cancelled it should *surely* go back to being a 5-round Championship. We've asked those in charge if not, why not.
World Rugby is removing the word 'women's' from its flagship 15s and sevens World Cup events starting with the next Women's Rugby (15s) World Cup which will simply be called Rugby World Cup 2021.
Personally would have gone for Men's Rugby World Cup and Women's Rugby World Cup.
In the crowd at Eng v Ire on Sunday will be around 400 women who've played for Eng or at regional level & who will be recognised on the day. Included are members of the '94 World Cup winning team & the family of one of the coaches Steve Jew who sadly passed away recently. Lovely.
Big retirement news today with Rocky Clark deciding to hang up her test boots. To become the world’s most capped women’s player with 137 international appearance means her legendary status rather speaks for itself. Not sure we’ll see another like her. Kudos 👊🏻
NEW: Scotland will offer 30 players contracts after the World Cup as part of new investment & a new strategy.
They are also investing in 2 semi pro teams. No huge info on that but understood to be prep for a Welsh/Irish/Scot regional competition.

This year's
@Womens6Nations
seems rather cursed. Weather and Corona-virus fears postpone two games; players speaking out about poor facilities and ridiculous scheduling making following all games almost impossible. Case for change never clearer.
World Rugby's powerful Executive Committee currently has a vacancy, following Gareth Davies' departure. Of 11 current members, 10 are men. We understand numerous women are entering the race to replace him. Look forward to hearing more in the coming days about the next steps.
It's hard to imagine many other walks of life where someone could be hired to take on a successful programme, oversee it fail miserably and then publicly blame the people beneath them (in this case mostly amateur players) for its failure and have their company protect them.
Your regular reminder that those in charge at the IRFU think that the women's game is lucky to get what it's getting & so it's highly doubtful anything will change as a result of this.
Big news for women's rugby. World Rugby has launched WXV, a 3-tiered annual competition model that will start in 2023. With £6.4 million, three WXV competitions will feature 16 teams and will be hosted within a new September-October global competition window. More to follow.
Disgusting. Jamie Cudmore, assistant coach to Canada's men's team, mocking the national women's 7s and joking about their allegations of harassment and bullying. What are
@RugbyCanada
going to do about this?
Players of the 🇨🇦 rugby 7s team have shared tweets, now deleted, of a Rugby Canada coach who was taunting them on Twitter after their loss this morning. They say they’ve been experiencing this since they filed a complaint with their governing body in January

The crowd of 18, 604 fans who watched France v Wales in Grenoble today is a new attendance record for the Women's Six Nations - but it will only last a week!
Starting tomorrow, we celebrate 10 years of Scrumqueens with a week of great content on the site. We'll be kicking off with our XV Team of the Decade followed by our 7s team of the decade and reflections on how the game has changed since we launched in 2009.

Are the 7 NZ women's players who have also done this not players on the planet? (Linda Itunu, Sarah Goss, Kelly Brazier, Portia Woodman, Selica Winiata, Renee Wickcliffe & Huriana Manuel... ) May seem petty but language matters.
NEWS: 12 women's players have accepted full-time contracts with the Welsh Rugby Union for the first time.
The 12-month contracts came into force this week with players and management based at the National Centre of Excellence.
