Do you ever wonder why India's education system lacks innovation and creativity?
Here is India’s LARGEST prototyping centre called T-works trying to solve that exact problem!
🧵
Does English medium mean BETTER quality education?
Let’s explore an alternative Kannada medium school in Mysuru that challenges this idea!
💡 Fun fact: there is absolutely NO homework given in this school!
The school is called “Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ school” also called “Gyaan Centre”!
It’s not only a school giving girls an opportunity for quality education but it is also an architectural marvel!
Diana Kellogg, designed the entire school paying tribute to the local colours, art and environment.
Due to the climate, the building considers the local typology of jalis, natural light, ventilation and thermal protection in simple but effective ways!
“India is a country built on chaos, in constant motion and evolution. If an architect can step into this energy instead of fighting it, their work will flourish. It's a kind of a spiralling energy, which is quite different from the linear Western way of working.”
Usually I write threads about schools but thought for a change I’d write about an alternative college in Bangalore!
There are approximately 700 colleges in Bangalore but this one is super unique!
Because this tweet blew up out of proportion, I’m getting to do a podcast with the architect Diana Kellogg herself!
This might not mean a lot to some but honestly means the world to me 💛
Thank you to everyone who made this happen!
An Indian school built on a farm where children learn by walking around in nature and hiking mountains? Can it be possible?
Yes, it is very much possible! This is the story of Marudam Farm School, a multicultural educational setup! 👇🏾🧵
Is ALTERNATIVE education only for the rich?
Contrary to popular belief, on the outskirts of Bengaluru is an alternative school that truly empowers children who come from underprivileged and abusive households!🧵👇🏾
Changed the classroom design a tad bit today. Just benches to be specific and it had a huge impact in how children automatically began to listen to each other + increased peer learning.
You might be thinking Gurukula Systems belong to the past but there is a Gurukula in Bangalore that is challenging our Indian education system! 🧵👇🏽
@vidyakshetra
Left the itinerary at home today. Just walked around without a particular place is mind. I think one of the best ways to explore a city is to walk aimlessly!
Hello hello Twitter 👋🏾
I am looking for a few volunteers to record children’s books in their voices!
Criteria:
- voice modulation
- storytelling skills
- an ease with reading out loud
If interested, send 👋🏾 in the comments!
RT for Karma 💛🌎
An Israeli couple transformed 70 acres of land in Tamil Nadu into a sustainable forest that explores not only alternatives approaches to education but also an alternative lifestyle! 🧵
15 documentaries is the goal for this year. Here is the plan :)
Last 2 options, still need to be decided.
I’ve highlighted what’s already shot. Riverside will be done on Monday!
Last Saturday I visited “The School” in Chennai, 1 of Krishnamurthi’s 6 alternative schools in India.
It’s methodology is one of a kind!
Here’s everything that makes it alternative👇🏽
Book recommendation:
There’s this super interesting book called “children solve problems” by Edward de Bono where the author gives children problems and they draw their solutions out. The book is a compilation of these drawings by children! Read this introduction👇🏾
This man TRANSFORMED a road into a classroom! And converted walls into blackboards! 💥
This is how Deep Narayan Nayak began to be known as ‘Teacher of the streets’! 🧵
Why Kannada medium?
Based on research and common sense, they felt that children learn better in their mother tongue. They believe we have made it a norm to learn in an alien language that is in no way connected to the land and surrounding.
So an instinct, they took this step.
I’ve written a couples of threads on different alternative schools/ organisations in our country so I thought it’s time to make a MEGA thread to put all of them together so that it’s easily accessible!
Here are 10 threads! 👇🏽
I won a MICRO GRANT! 💥
The grant was given for an idea that I had around creating a makerspace that would push children to think critically, creatively and independently!
Here is how the idea evolved! 🧵👇🏾
Their main aim is to create a culture of innovators and makers in India who can experiment without the fear of failing.
Completely the opposite of our school system!
I had the opportunity to speak to the people behind this building, here is what he said
@ChintalaStudio
:
Today a teacher call a child ( 9 y/o), a “rowdy” and that he will turn out to be one when he is older. She said it with so much conviction.
He is just 9! It scared me that if adults like this repeated this with so much conviction systematically, he’d believe that himself one day
This is a school that dreams are made of and I felt like there’s a LOT we can learn from this space!
This school is called The Yellow Train School, in Coimbatore!👇🏽
Do higher fees in schools mean BETTER quality education?
Let’s look at this alternative school in Auroville that shows us how this is ABSOLUTELY not true! 🧵
💡Note: if you want to volunteer in Auroville, read till the end.
Done and dusted!
Early childhood education diploma. The most important thing this course has given me apart from the beautiful network is “hope”
Hope that there are a lot of people out there who care about children and education in India.
Small win on this journey 💪🏾
To parents and educators,
Finally making a community on WhatsApp where we can have more uninterrupted + deeper conversations around education and what it means in the context of India.
RT for this to reach the right people or tag someone you think would benefit from this💛
So this happened!
Remember I made a documentary about Ananya Trust?
After I posted that video,
@malpani
through
@apnipathshala_
provided 10 PCs to the school to build their own pod! Now they have a room where children have access to great quality PCs!
Have a look! 👇🏾
Something they told us in school, that still makes sense to me till this day:
A life without a goal is a life without joy. But the quality of your life depends on the quality of that goal.
There is suddenly a new wave of leadership courses out there now! Too many to count!
But I found 1 leadership course in Kerala that is SUPER UNIQUE and will make you re-evaluate your definition of inclusion!
The organisation is called Kanthari!
How do children learn differently here? And what makes this school unique?
Here are 4 things that stand out:
1. No homework
2. No tuition
3. Thematic learning
4. Learning by doing
Let’s dive deeper into each of these categories!👇🏾
I’m 4 subscribers away from 500 on YouTube! 🎉
Here is visual representation of the time it took to grow with a comparison of my hair growth!
Short hair is at 3 subscribers 💛
Who is this for?
This is for anyone who wants to experiment with hardware and needs a space to help their ideas come to life!
Most people have ideas but don’t have a space where it is easy to express those ideas! T-works is like the bridge between ideas and manifestation.
Why did they start this school?
There was a lot of frustration around the British education system and the factory model that schools used. That’s when a group of friends came together in the early 2000s and wanted to change it for good.
T- works was inaugurated on March 2nd 2023.
The main question is WHY was this established?
Here is their mission!👇🏽
1. Lower barrier to entry for creativity
2. Create a network of creators
3. Active collaboration
4. Opportunity for upskilling
Today’s let’s talk about a school that was started by an inspirational woman!
This Indian school also won the prize for the World’s MOST innovative school!
Here is the story of how Riverside, Ahmedabad started 🧵
@kiranbirsethi
How to choose a school? (Simple trick)
Visit the school and observe the children. What do you notice?
Are children asked to walk with their hands behind their backs and with their heads down or are they running around playfully?
Their body language will be your answer!
Reached 1k subscribers today! Took 10 months for this to happen so let’s continue the visual tradition of comparing hair growth it took from 0 subscribers to 500 to finally 1k! 💛
Finally going to cut my hair now 🙌🏽

Random fact: I ran a cookie business with a friend during the first COVID wave as I was graduating that year and the whole timetable was topsy turvy. Ran it for around 10 months!
It was called Circle: eat poetry. It came in a circular box, with art on the box+ a poem inside 🥹
The latest theme was water. In this theme students learnt all aspects of water. The maths of it, science of it, songs were learnt about water ,a drama was presented, environmental aspect was discussed and so on.
I used to believe that Finland or some other so called ideal system could show us how to approach education but I was wrong!
I’m mind blown by the amount experiments around education and schooling that are taking place in our own country. Exciting time to be in this space.
Example of what they offer!
👇🏽
1. Metalworking
2. Woodworking
3. Ceramics
4. Facilities that include 3D printing
5. Laser cutting
6. Electronics test and measurement
They realised if they couldn’t change the entire system, they wanted to change at least one school!
So the school started in 2008 as an attempt to fix all that they believed was wrong with the factory model!
This place is called Bhoomi College and just like the name suggests, Bhoomi (earth) is inspired by our planet.
For most of us, college life is about scrambling to finish assignments but here it’s about the ability to connect with our earth and to follow a sustainable lifestyle!
Starting a second makerspace in another school in Bengaluru!
The aim for this year is to have a minimum of 5 functional maker spaces set up in schools🚀
There are hundreds of tweets about what people wish they learnt in school.
But the real need of the hour is building “student agency”. Building an environment where they want to start and complete projects independently rather than depending on an adult for instructions.
I feel like perspectives and history are key to understanding an issue holistically!
So here are 10 books you SHOULD read if you would really like to understand the Indian Education System better! 👇🏽
Afternoon was spent at Sahaay, an organisation working with children living in the slum area in Ahmedabad. Great to see
@zeal1992
working with these children who have so much to offer to the world! 🫶🏾
Teacher in me was brought back to life!
2. No tuition
They believe parents and the community play a huge role in the child’s growth. During the admission itself they make it clear that children don’t need to go for tuitions and instead need to play or interact with their parents.
Instead of restricting education to just school syllabus, they want an overall growth in children. Thus they encourage parents to take their children out for festivals, dramas, or even to the museum!
Children need to learn from life rather than just books!
This place was built with the intention that children need a space that is dedicated for them to immerse themselves creatively and for them to become active members for change in the world rather than passive recipients of information!
This is their thought process👇🏾
2nd makerspace is ready in Bangalore!
As summer break is here, it will officially start in June!
If you’d like to volunteer in any of these spaces, you can dm me:)
1. No homework
Children spend a lot of time in school as it is, whatever work needs to be done can be done during school hours itself. They don’t want children to work on the school syllabus at home.
If at all children need/ want to do something, only activities are given!
I used to think a better curriculum or a colourful textbook would change how children learn but in a classroom, one of the key factors is how excited the teachers themselves are about the subject or lesson.
The “joyful” factor then becomes contagious.
Something super exciting that this centre offers for people who want to create and build is a 1-year long paid Fellowship!
Not only can you create with the facilities provided but you can also create a network and build products with other fellows as well!
We all know rote learning and mugging information are things of the past. But what’s the solution?
Experiential learning might be the answer to how our future generations learn!
I found 10 experiential learning spaces that BLEW MY MIND! 👇🏽
🧵
Yesterday I found this class in Marudam Farm school SO SO interesting!
The teacher made 3 groups: animals, plants and grains. She gave the kids 30 minutes to roam around the farm and observe their topic and come back with questions about what they observed. 👇🏾
With everything that is happening in Ladakh, here is an organisation in Ladakh that is making education culturally relevant with its alternative approach! 🧵
This is something that Sri Aurobindo said years ago but I feel like it’s the most relevant advice for any educator!
"The first principle of true teaching is that nothing can be taught. The teacher is not an instructor or taskmaster, he is a helper and guide."
