Step 1: Pro Bowl selections get announced
Step 2: People get mad about snubs
Step 3: Everyone drops out
Step 4: Josh Allen and Blake Bortles get added to the team as the 27th and 28th QBs
Step 5: People get mad about terrible Pro Bowlers
Step 6: No one watches the game
Doug Gottlieb is obviously trying to become another Skip Bayless. Having worked with both of them I can say there’s one big difference: Skip is an actor playing a jackass on tv, Doug is just being himself.
Can we take a moment to respect Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Steelers coaching staff?
They dealt with this BS from Antonio Brown for years and mostly kept it in house. Then he shows up in Oakland and Gruden/Mayock can’t even control him for a couple months in the offseason.
If Florida State is so much worse without Jordan Travis, then why are they ranked 5th??
Drop them down to like 9th or something. If they're better than Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, then their undefeated record should put them in the playoffs.
This should help put into perspective just how good the Browns run defense is... and also just how historically terrible Hue Jackson must be to allow a defense like this to go winless
Browns fans crushing Donovan Peoples-Jones should read the rule book. That was a brilliant play. Once touched by the kicking team, the offense gets the ball at that spot OR at the spot the ball gets returned to… there was zero risk.
Washington as the lowest ranked undefeated team despite having the best win, by the committee's own measurement, still makes absolutely no sense to me.
Mark Schlereth's ignorant comments about Baker Mayfield being a product of Oklahoma's screen game is a wonderful reminder of just how little some of these analysts actually watch the game they're paid to analyze
Hue Jackson watched Baker and Tyrod for the past 2 months and came to the conclusion that Tyrod was so much better that Baker didn’t even deserve snaps with the starters.
This absurd fact can’t be repeated enough.
Literally every single team has to win 4 straight games to win a national championship.
Either you win your conference championship and then 3 playoff games OR... you lose your conference championship and then 4 playoff games OR... you don't play one, and then 4 playoffs games
The new College Football Playoff will put the 4 highest ranked conference champions as seeds 1 through 4.
That means that even if Notre Dame is the
#1
ranked team in the country, they would get the
#5
seed, requiring them to win 4 straight games to win a title.
That's brutal.

Among WRs with at least 15 deep targets (20+ yds), John Ross saw the second highest uncatchable target rate (73.3%) according to
@SportsInfo_SIS
Maybe the Bengals should get a competent QB before giving up on Ross.
Since the start of 2021, there have been only 2 games in which a team did not blitz, per TruMedia.
Bills vs Rams last night
Bills vs Chiefs, Wk 5 2021
Bills won both games by 39 combined points, with 9 combined sacks.
Here are the debut passing charts for Mayfield, Rosen, Darnold and Allen.. completions are in green, incompletions are red. Intentional throw aways weren't charted... Mayfield was 3-6 on throws 20+ yards downfield, the other three were 2-8 combined
Urban Meyer said at some point Haskins has to become a more dangerous runner. Translation: ”my offense hasn’t evolved since 2003 and I don’t know how to coach a pocket passer.”
Freddie Kitchens looks like an damn genius... In reality, he's just doing the things that we all knew the Browns should have been doing—running Chubb more, throwing to Duke more, etc. It's just that Hue and Haley were so incompetent that common sense now looks like brilliance.
Kobe had a 3 year stretch in the prime of his career where he couldn’t get out of the first round of the Western Conference.. but he thinks LeBron needs to figure out how to win? Kobe was great, but he couldnt sniff LeBron’s level of success when he wasn’t surrounded by All-Stars
So the Browns now rank 5th in the NFL in rushing yds/att and 1st in rush yds/att allowed..
I don't care how bad the passing game is on offense/defense, a competent coaching staff would be able to game plan around those strengths and win a couple games.
It’s disappointing to see the national media discussing
@bakermayfield
’s interview walk-out without explaining the context of who Tony Grossi is.
Baker is not the first Browns player/coach to snap at Grossi and he won’t be the last. Grossi is a troll. No one respects him.
A year ago Carson Strong opted out of Nevada’s bowl game.
He went undrafted and he’s not on an NFL roster.
High profile opt outs make a lot of sense but some of these guys are opting out of what would be the last game they’ll ever play. I just can’t wrap my mind around that.
Among the top RBs in this draft class, only two averaged over 5 yards per carry and also converted at least 85% of their short yardage attempts (according to

Ohio State's

Penn State's

“Rosen was injury prone in So Cal so how can he possibly make it through the winters in Buffalo?”
What the hell do you think a winter in Buffalo is like??? It’s just a little snow, it’s not a war zone.
Who would've guessed the Falcons would have one of the most dominant offensive lines in the league?
Despite running into stacked boxes at one of the highest rates, Falcons RBs lead the league in % of carries with 3+ yards before contact.
ATL ranked 27th by that metric last yr
RJ Oben might be the top pass-rusher in the transfer portal this year.
Maybe he'll follow Mike Elko to A&M, but his dad (Roman Oben) played at Louisville and his brother (Andre) was recruited to Purdue by current Louisville HC Jeff Brohm...
If you want to know which NFL play callers know what they're doing and which ones are completely incompetent, I would argue there's no better chart to look at than this.
Here's the rate at which each teams runs the ball on 2nd and 10:
Joe Burrow gets rid of the ball in under 3 seconds at the 6th highest rate in the league, per TruMedia
Rams rank 26th in EPA/dropback allowed on dropbacks lasting < 3 seconds.
You know what UCF fans should really be pissed off about? Not getting invited into a Power 5 conference.
They’ve invested heavily in the athletics program over the last decade. UCF is more committed to being highly competitive than a lot of Power 5 schools
If you think Josh Rosen doesn't like football and will therefor be bad at football bc he has opinions about stuff other than football, then I can only assume you're also bad at your job bc you have opinions about Josh Rosen.
Highest % of 3rd down pass attempts short of the sticks
Lions, 63%
Broncos, 59%
Panthers, 54%
Titans, 54%
Raiders, 52%
Giants, 50%
League avg is 44.5% (via

We’re entering anonymous scout season, so here’s my annual reminder:
Scout is an entry level job in the NFL, which means some of them are brilliant future GMs and some of them are completely clueless.
It’s best to assume the latter if the quote catches you by surprise.
I'm not gonna defend Zeke's character. I don't know him. And *maybe* he did this. But I will defend his right not to be publicly labeled a domestic abuser by the NFL based on zero evidence.
The Browns offense is averaging a turnover or a penalty once every 7.5 plays, worst in the league.
"You're either coaching it or allowing it to happen."
UCF is already a strong program and they're likely to land in a Power 5 conference sooner or later. I think it's a very safe bet UCF goes to more New Years Six bowls in the next 10 years than Nebraska.
Colts brought 4 pass-rushers 82% of the time last year, 2nd highest rate in NFL.
When Michigan brought 4 pass-rushers, Kwity Paye generated a 25% pressure rate, best in Big Ten 🔥🔥

@football_sis
Here are all the passing charts for Mayfield, Rosen Allen, Darnold through 2 preseason games... what stands out most to me is how few attempts Darnold has at intermediate/deep levels. He's living within 5 yds of the LOS
What I like about the Vrabel hire for Tennessee: they're hiring him for his general coaching abilities, rather than his experience as a playcaller. It's never made sense to me why teams always hire HCs based on their play calling success, when most HCs don't call plays.
@minakimes
Stats seem to support you. Obviously we know Manning lost the ability to throw deep but up to 20 yards he was still competent... Pretty clear difference btwn him and Ben in the 10-20 yard range (stats from
@football_sis
)
To me, that's on the coach. Thanks to the D, the Browns have been in a one-score game in the 4th quarter 9 times this season.. If you can't scrape together a single win in all those close games, that's a coaching problem.
If I were Sean McVay, I’d go get the worst coach I can find, bring him in as my OC, secretly not give him any responsibilities and then laugh when some idiot owner hires him as a head coach in 2020
Mike Gundy is finished at OK State. Maybe not immediately, but young athletes are paying attention to social issues like never before and his outspoken far right views are the end of his recruiting power. If he isnt fired for this explicitly, his inability to recruit will end him
I've charted every throw from Baker Mayfield this season and I'm sold on him as a top-10 pick.
Here's a thread of some plays I pulled out to highlight his strenghts
Based on route-adjusted numbers, Kamari Lassiter's ball-hawk rate was 79% above expected last year, per
@SportsInfo_SIS
.
I don't care what his 40 time was. You can't make that happen in the SEC if you're not a top-tier athlete.
When this picture popped up on my timeline yesterday I thought it was some sort of Make-a-Wish thing.. only just realized it’s an *actual* 5-star RB who just looks like an 11-year old
BREAKING: No. 1 all-purpose back Will Shipley commits to
#Clemson
.
"Clemson, in my mind, is no question the place that I need to be at."
He goes in-depth on his decision and the pressures here:
What I'll remember most about this Cavs season is
@Cavsdan
's ego getting in the way of a contract extension for David Griffin, which led to Kyrie getting traded prematurely, which then led to Jeff Green, Jordan Clarkson and the corpse of JR Smith playing important playoff minutes
I've seen basically zero talk about Dorian Thompson-Robinson this draft season, so I just wanted remind people he's out there.
QBs with DTR's arm and athleticism always get drafted.
So Vance Joseph has more confidence in his kicker to make this FG, his defense to get the ball back, his offense to get into FG range and his kicker to kick another FG... than he does in his offense to pick up one yard???
Asking Norm Turner to coach Cam Newton and Christian McCaffrey is like asking your grandpa to teach you how to use your iPad. He may have been a mad typist on that old typewriter back in the day. Doesn't mean he knows a damn thing about today's gadgets.
Panthers pursuit of Mayfield makes no sense at this point. If you’re done with Darnold, give Corral a shot and see what you’ve got. You’re bad either way. This is why lame duck coaches are dangerous.
The Browns own the No. 1 pick in the best QB class since at least 2004, for the love of god why on earth would they sign Kirk Cousins, a 30 year old very average QB, when they FINALLY have a chance to draft the QB this franchise has needed for decades?
Russell Wilson has taken a sack on 16% of dropbacks vs the blitz this year.
Among 239 qualified QB seasons since 2016, that ranks 236th (via
@football_sis
)
Since some people are really fixated on sacks...
Sam Howell has taken 20 sacks on plays lasting 3.5 seconds or longer, per TruMedia.
Only 2 other QBs have taken 20 or more *total* sacks.
There are no plays designed to require 3.5 seconds. All of those sacks are on Howell.
How bad is Sam Howell?
He's been pressured in 2.5 sec or less on 19.6% of his dropbacks.
The 5th LOWEST rate in the league.
But he's taken a sack on 13.5% of his dropbacks, the 2nd HIGHEST rate.
ℹ️TrueMedia
I've been staying quiet on the QB debates lately bc we've covered it all already.. but I just want to pose this question again: If Josh Rosen doesn't love football, how did he develop near-flawless mechanics by the age of 21?
T.J. Hockenson is the slowest tight end (4.70 40-yd dash) to be drafted inside the top 20 since Bubba Franks in 2000. Extremely rare to see a TE go this high who doesn't have rare speed for the position.
Random thought: why is Rosen's love of the game/desire to be great questioned but Darnold's isn't? Shouldn't we assume the guy who has near flawless mechanics/footwork has already put in years of hard work? And maybe the guy with sloppy technique has a questionable work ethic?
Reason to believe Burrow will get much better when Cincy invests in the o-line:
Burrow faced pressure in less than 2.5 sec on 24.2% of his dropbacks, the 10th highest rate.
But when he was kept clean for 2.5 sec (or got rid of the ball earlier, without pressure) he was ELITE
With Bill Polian in the news yet again for being an incompetent talent evaluator, keep in my mind he owes most of his NFL success to Peyton Manning-a player he wanted to trade away in 2004.
Ollie Gordon finished the year as the leading rushing in CFB. 2nd time in last 5 years OK State has produced the leading rusher (Chuba Hubbard in 2019).
That's pretty crazy for a program that doesn't even lean on an ultra run-heavy offense.
Every year around this time I mention how honest Nick Saban is about his players. When someone like Reuben Foster "falls" you know Saban's assessment is behind it. This is what Saban said about Foster after last year's draft:
Here's how I've got this year's QB class stacked up compared to the 2021 class.
Numbers don't necessarily correlate to round grade, but depending on the depth of the class, typically an 80+ puts you in or near the top 32 prospects. 100 would be a perfect score.
My running back hot takes for the day:
It won’t be easy to replace 100% of Melvin Gordon’s production.
It will be very easy to replace ~90% of his production at 1/5 the price tag.
This is the perfect example of the type of gun laws we want. I have no interest in the government taking guns away from law abiding citizens. That sets a scary precedent.
But like, can we at least make sure everyone who buys a gun goes through a background check first?
Under Florida law, Nicolas Cruz could purchase firearms in a private sale without any background check.
He wouldn't have to register his weapons or have a license to own them.
Those are the gun laws on the books in Florida.
#Parkland
Per
@SportsInfo_SIS
, the Browns run into a box with 7+ defenders at the highest rate (77% of their rush att). That's usually a bad thing... but they're also averaging 5.0 yds/att into a stacked box, best rate in the league.
Defenses know exactly what's coming and can't stop it
