Novelist, poet, critic, activist, trans woman, Londoner, sentimentalist, radical,a bit disliked by various silly people. Read my Catullus versions. She/her
These are the WHRC demands. I regard them - if they were enforced - as a warrant for genocide. When liberal journalists say I exaggerate the threat to trans people, they need to read this carefully.
A creepy GC male just misgendered me and mocked me for looking old.
Silly boy, I'm 72 and have put up with 40 years of transphobic bullshit.
Of course I look old. I am old.
And still thrive.
It's terrifying and sad that a number of feminists from the 70s & 80s have, with fascism, world war and environmental collapse imminent, chosen to obsess with persuading women that trans people are the real existential threat.
It's the mindboggling fucking pettiness that gets me.
After my recent fall and hip replacement, I spent two weeks on a women's ward and chatted a lot to the women I shared a bay with. My being trans came up occasionally, mostly in the context of their outrage at people hating me
I don't know about you, but if we have to have riots, I'd rather have the 'OMG they cancelled Brexit' riot than the 'There's nothing to eat' riot, the 'the banks have closed' root, the 'they abolished the NHS' riot and the 'they shot rioters' riot.
If Joanne Rowling were serious about protecting women and girls, she would use every one of her billions to defend abortion rights. That would put her at risk of being seriously monstered or perhaps even genuinely threatened.
Instead, she comes after a small harmless minority.
This is the revisionist history. There were trans groups as part of GLF from the autumn of 71. Come Together published a Trans Manifesto in 1972.
I was there.
You are at best mistaken and deceived by ridiculous propaganda.
@RozKaveney
It was GAY pride not this alphabet nonsense but the revision of gay history is becoming standard and now Trans is treated like a scared cow to be worshipped, when all I see is gay conversion therapy and Autogynophilia nothing to celebrate
A lot of nice middle-aged middle-class media folk who think they would have behaved well in the 1930s will tolerate racism, eugenics, sexism and queerphobia if it comes from nicely dressed people with the right accent while clutching pearls about rude millennials on Twitter.
Pride never 'belonged' in the first place to the purity squad. It belonged to the Out and Proud who were prepared to be gay, lesbian, bi, trans and queer in the street and risk random violence and police to do so.
I was there in 72 and will try to be there as long as I live.
Any other homosexuals in Brighton sitting at home listening to the distant sounds of
#BrightonPride
and wondering how we became excluded from the thing we created? I went to my first Brighton Pride in 94 and every year until the TQ+++ took over.
I'm a socialist. I'm a feminist. Those are ideological positions I hold.
I'm trans - but that's no more an ideological position than is my being 70 or a poet.
There is no such thing as trans ideology. Just a lot of trans people trying to survive.
I used to be friends with Suzanne Moore.
Suzanne Moore states that a group which wants me removed from the women's toilets, changing rooms and hospital wards I have used for the 40 years since I transitioned is not a hate group.
Clearly Suzanne Moore is no longer my friend.
I grew up in the 50s. I shared with a friend my feeling that I was supposed to be a girl in 1955. I read about trans women in the papers well before I was 10 -Coccinelle got married. In my teens, kids in my school asked unprompted if I was going to get a sex change when I grew up
It's a matter of concern that a heterosexual woman like Joanne Rowling believes herself qualified to adjudicate the long standing dispute between lesbians about trans people. She is butting in, talking over and erasing: she might mind her own business.
A piece of context...
One of my guiding principles since I was 11 comes from the moment in LOTR when Saruman at bay in Isengard offers to talk to Gandalf like reasonable forgiving both sides adults and Merry and Pippin think it's all over.
It's a bore that people like J.K.Rowling, Melanie Phillips and Maya Forstater want to make my life unpleasant. But even if they change the law and public opinion, they won't become good people or happy people, whereas I will find a way to survive, be useful and make art.
Always.
So basically Glinner wants to promote a largely Nazi website because it hates trans people as much as he does, but wishes it were a bit less obviously Nazi.
So I guess he has picked his side.
I'm a trans woman.
In 1988 I wrote a novel TINY PIECES OF SKULL about trans life in 70s Chicago. It took me three decades to sell it whereupon it won a Lambda.
My poems DIALECTIC OF THE FLESH was shortlisted for a Lambda.
My translation of CATULLUS was praised by the TLS...
One of the most infuriating things about the trans moral panic is the representation of trans lives by our enemies. I've now lived a long life as an out trans woman and nothing they say has any resemblance to my experience.
The NHS website has changed its advice on the use of puberty blockers for trans adolescents. The science hasn't changed, but this government has decided to listen to bigots and cranks. This is how the removal of a minority's civil equality proceeds.
In Trans Awareness Week it shouldn't be necessary for me to point out that, when I finally transitioned in my late 20s in the 70s, I knew personally twenty trans people who had transitioned ahead of me and knew the names of a score more.
Buck Angel is a child.
I went to a reading last night...A bunch of trans women reading their fiction and about 50 trans men and trans women cheering them on.And I thought 'we might win'.We're smart. We're beautiful. That's why they're so afraid of us.They'll hurt us. They'll kill some of us.
We will win
I am not clear why GC women are so keen to come into my timeline to say they don't want me playing sport against them.
I'm 73 with emphysema, a hernia and a dodgy ankle.
Women's sport is safe.
I don't talk about this much.
But I had my breasts done under a local to save money.
I had to have twenty revisions to my GRS. And never had a moment of regret.
I have lived well for 40 years to spite my haters.
Trans people are strong as mountains.
I told Julie Bindel back in 2008 that her hatred of trans people would eventually change her into a supporter of the Tory Right. It saddens me that I was right about this.
It's an incredibly dangerous precedent to pander to the idea that a minority should lose its existing legal rights and it is surprising that not everyone sees that.
This is a bad mis-step on Stonewall's part. The
#CassReview
is an attack on Gillick competence. It's unevidenced claim that brains do not mature until 25 is potentially something that will be used to attack Equal Age of Consent and Equal Marriage.
The Cass Review, an independent review of gender care services for children and young people, has been published today after almost four years. We know that elements of the review and how it is covered in the news may cause concern for trans children and young people and their…
I shall not panic about the Badenoch/EHRC stitch-up. I will continue to conduct myself in the same ways that I have since I transitioned in 1979 and if this stinking government tries to make that hard I will engage in civil disobedience to do so.
This, I think, pretty much settles the 'was Marsha P. Johnson trans?' question?
I look forward to retraction by revisionists. Also their apology to living trans legends who were at Stonewall, or the Compton Cafeteria...
GCs really would rather lose democracy and all human rights than use language that accepts that not everyone with a functioning uterus wants to be regarded as a woman. This semantic obsession has become a dangerous intoxication.
It used not to be this way. In the late 70s was able to access HRT from my GPeven before I transitioned socially. I saw a GIC in a couple of months. I was approved for surgery after two years and only had to wait a year. When I had post-op complications, they were soon dealt with
There were always a few feminists who wanted to police lesbian sex, bully bisexuals and dislike trans people. By 2010 few women were listening to them.
However, in 2015, the US ChristianRight realised they had lost Big on equal marriage and needed a new tactic.
This is abuse.
'Let me invent language to pretend you don't really exist. Renounce all of your existing human rights. Exist only in a segregated bubble. And we might stop calling for your extermination'.
@RichardDawkins
Repeat after me : the map is not the territory.
Science is an attempt to understand, not the thing it understands.
The universe is not a social construct: our attempts to understand it are.
Around a decade ago I warned Julie that transphobia was an essentially right-wing position that would inexorably drag her and her friends towards an essentially misogynist Tory party.
She claimed that would never happen.
Seriously, the fact that one of the first actions of Viktor Orban on attaining absolute power has been to strip trans people of rights should oblige trans-hostile people who think they're on the Left to ask themselves whether they are, objectively considered,
fascist bigots.
A lot of my nice liberal non-trans friends sometimes think I worry too much. But this is a columnist in a famous newspaper inciting violence - which she will claim is metaphorical - against a small and powerless minority already subject to actual real hate crime.
My apologies in advance if I suffer fools less gladly today.
My dear friend Rachel Pollack just died to whom I owe so much of who I am and with whom in 1972, I helped draft one of the first modern TransRights manifestos
1. Abandon eliminationist rhetoric.
Trans people exist and we are not going to go away. The claim is that Janice Raymond and Helen Joyce only want us to stop being trans.
That's not going to happen.
People will sometimes ask us why trans people spend so much time arguing with trans-hostile women about our right to be in safe spaces when it's men who kill us.
Men kill us when we're not in safe spaces.
If you exclude us from safe spaces more of us will be killed.
By men.
@ladyhacksaway
@cunttrapsupreme
1. I'm not
2. Good example of what I'm talking about eg trashing and policing
3. If you're such an expert on lesbian history, you will know how much of the last fifty years got wasted on this particular debate and how many lesbians have never agreed with you.
I say this in all sadness.
If your hatred of trans people has led you into an alliance with actual Nazis, then any previous credibility you had as a feminist is worthless.
Why, in a week when a serving police officer has been convicted of multiple rapes, are three leading feminist commentators using their platforms for trans-bashing?
I'm just staggered that anyone would try to deny that there was a moral panic about lesbians and gay men in the 1980s in order to pretend that there's not one against trans people now.
HIV? Clause 28?
Just in case my friends and admirers don't understand...
This means I will never be able to go very far from my flat or risk breaking the law when I need a toilet.
No hate group ever admits to being a hate group. Much of the time people in hate groups don't admit to themselves that they're in a hate group.
It's still a hate group if the people in it are middle-class with nice accents.
This is your daily reminder that there is no such thing as trans ideology or gender ideology, that exclusion of trans women from toilets is not a long-standing demand and that most GC women have been conned into a moral panic that mostly benefits the misogynist Far Right.
2. Stop lying.
About the consequences of changes to the law.
About the effects of HRT.
About the incompatibility of trans people and feminism.
About the dark money funding of trans acceptance.
I have very reluctantly resigned my membership of the Labour Party. The issues - expulsion of Left Jews, wavering on trans stuff, disrespect of the membership, centrist authoritarianism, spinelessness on refugees, Brexit - are really too many to list.
But, essentially, Starmer.
Many people who follow me on here know me from fandom or my books or through Left politics or through just thinking my tweets about this things are cool.
Let's be clear. I'm scared.
As a trans woman. In my 70s. Who survived growing up queer in the 50s and 60s.I
There's a dangerous assumption that if trans adolescents have unsupportive parents and schools, and no access to the NHS, they won't transition or even explore.
What they won't get to do is do those things in safety.
I am 69 and trans. I definitively transitioned 39 years ago and had surgery in 1982.
I've done a certain amount of worthwhile political, artistic and intellectual work
I am totally in solidarity with my young trans sisters, brothers and siblings.
3. In particular, stop using junk science whether it be simplistic stuff about sexual binaries or crank theories like AGP and ROGD.
And don't misrepresent scientific papers whether on prevalence of criminal behaviour or the bacterial flora of neovaginas.
Note.
Butler rather temperately did not say that transphobic feminists are fascists. She said that there is enough overlap between their essentialism and fascism that they are not useful allies in the fight against it.
Even at the darkest moments of previous UK trans history - when we lost for four decades the legal right to marry - when we could be arrested for soliciting for 'walking while trans' - there was never an attempt to force us to use the wrong toilets or hospital wards.
I don't like having to do this.
But with Julie Bindel talking as if she owns lesbianism, and JCJ talking as if she owns womanhood, and Malcolm Clark talking at all...
I have been part of the community for a very long time.
I don't regard this as earning bragging rights.
...and by the Bryn Mawr Classical Quarterly.
I'm a moderately successful writer. In my 70s.
It took this long.
This is why it's important that there not be trans-hating bigots like Sasha White acting as gate-keepers in literary agencies.
I don't want Dido Harding paying a windfall tax: I want her to give it all back.
I don't just want gas and electricity company shareholders paying a windfall tax: I want them made criminally liable for every death their greed causes.
I looked for my community and I found it by the time I was 17
The idea that trans kids don't go looking for what they need and find it is just unrealistic. I found it in the 50s and 60s.
I don't believe in secret high level negotiations between self-appointed spokes people.
I never did.
Any tendency I had in that direction did not outlast my experiences in Liberty with Blairites 25 years ago.
5. Above all, before representing your positions as feminist or progressive 9r rational, consider the fact that they are acceptable to every deranged genocidal fascist on the planet.
4 Stop trying to destroy the reputations of trans people and allies by eg getting together to all plant negative reviews or flooding public bodies with form letter complaints.
(Julie, recently you have tried to harm two of my closest friends. I just saw no point in a public row)
What he means by 'the trans scandal' is the fact that we exist at all. What he pretends to mean by it is that some trans people are (inevitably) awful people ( so we shouldn't exist at all ).
This is a standard gambit of exterminationist politics.
Someone on the 'Gender Critical' side needs to see sense.
In the name of their absurd 50 year campaign against trans people, they are betraying gay rights, feminism, democracy, antiracism, the chance of human survival itself.
The thing about 'having a discussion' is that you're not having a discussion if one side constantly lies unchallenged and the other is constantly excluded from the conversation.
For four years anti-trans forces have consistently misrepresented the law and the facts.
They can't actually save women from actual nightmare but they can settle some 50 year old scores and pick up some grift along the way.
Though of course most of the real grift isn't even going into their pockets.
The attempt by GCs to stigmatize trans women for breast-feeding their adoptive children is a disgusting particular example of the vindictive prurience whereby they interpret anything we do from using a toilet to editing a feminist paper as a nonconsensual act of sexual fetishism.
No fucking principles.
No intersectional politics.
The belief that feminism doesn't involve working on yourself but is all about telling other people what to do.
Also, the Right threw money at them.
This is a direct consequence of the War On Trans. In the name of fair play and protecting women and girls, schoolgirls will be subjected to arbitrary physical assaults by medical professionals.
Rowling hangs out with, and blows kisses to, leading UK campaigners against abortion and lesbian rights because they are also anti-trans. This renders her charitable giving to women's charities somewhat irrelevant.
It's no coincidence that there is a massive overlap between trans-hostile people and anti-mask, anti-vax COVID deniers. Both involve a callous lack of human sympathy coupled with a combination of contrarianism and credulity.
She said she was quoting Don Corleone - an interesting choice - and said 'This War needs to end'.
To which I replied 'As President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would say, all you need to do is get your tanks off our lawn.'
In her article in the Sun, Julie Bindel claims to have been targeted by 'trans extremists' for 20 years. It is, of course, the other way round - in 2004, Julie wrote her scurrilous Guardian article, 'Let Gender Benders Beware'.
Being a bigot of any kind would mean that I was not doing my job properly.
That's why
@TheTobiasAgency
fired Sasha White.
Being grossly unprofessional.
It's not censorship to be fired for not doing your job properly. And if not doing your job properly is a matter of principle
One of the reasons why bigotry thrives is that nice middle class people find it hard to accept that other nice middle class people tell bare faced lies about people neither of them know.
I really wish that, in my 70s, I were able to restrict myself to talking on here about food, music and poetry, rather than having to enter into dialogue with people who want to remove my human rights.
@bindelj
Misgendering a 72 year old trans woman who transitioned for decades ago and has been politically active and out since the 60s infflicts remarkably little actual pain on me.
It does however make you look petty, stupid, rude and vindictive.
@HJoyceGender
@sally_hines
Could you clarify? How, short of active measures including but not limited to abolition of existing legal rights and identities, the imposition of criminal penalties, mass incarceration and compulsory conversion therapy, do you propose to reduce the number of trans people@
@gerardkelly33
Let me explain, very carefully.
In practice, up until now, trans women used women's single-sex facilities without anyone except a few cranks being bothered. Then a few right-wing organizations got upset that in spite of spending a gazillion dollars they had lost on gay marriage.
This is a hot take but I honestly don’t think ppl who transition after like ~30 are valid. I don’t think ppl who transition later in life can claim to have the same life experiences as trans women much less of women.
Hadley Freeman blaming loss of abortion rights of feminists who include trans people: Julie Bindel moaning that bisexual women aren't as feminist as her;Sheila Jeffreys condemning piercings and tattoos... The common thread is disrespect for the body autonomy of other women.
My patience is exhausted.
If trans-hostile people tell me about their fantasies of banning me from the toilets and changing rooms I have used for 40 years rather than pay attention to what the law actually says, and claim not to hate me, I shall not explain anything but block.
I have no power to speak for other trans people. I have no authority and little influence.
I don't think that Julie - even if she means it this time - can do anything to stop Posie Parker or Joanne Rowling let alone Putin.
She helped start all this. It's beyond her control now.
