It’s HERE! You spend all these years creating this music- living the experiences that inform it, listening to the people who inspire it, meeting the collaborators who perform it- and then all at once, it's a living work that's out in the world.
Every time i pick up my banjo (made by Jim Hartel) I feel a lick or tune wanting to escape into the world. This is one of hundreds that come and go. I play this banjo, a replica of a banjo style from 1858, because it feels deeply cultural and spiritual to me.
Take two…y’all, the love I’ve been feeling from my community in the last couple days has been giving me life.

always fighting for our history and the truth. Love y’all ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I woke up yesterday morning to new music from
@Beyonce

This song, "Build a House", came knocking a week ago and I had to let it in. What can I say about what’s been happening, what has happened, & what continues to happen, in this country, in the world? There’s too many words & none, all at once. So I let the music speak, as usual.

I think it’s important to mention at this juncture that I am a banjo scholar and early non-commercial country music enthusiast- for the real work on Country music as a genre, and our place in it, check out the brilliance of
@RissiPalmer
- she KNOWS!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Dropping another new song today feat.
@JasonIsbell
as my duet partner! "Yet To Be" is the story of a black woman and an Irish man falling in love in America. It's a story that has happened many times in our brutal, real, and undertold history.

Love all the agitation over “is it country???” Re: Texas Hold ‘Em. Reality is genre was created wholesale to sell our own music, American music of all kinds, back to us. Capitalism gotta capitalize…meanwhile the world burns.
Anyone who would like to have respectful dialogue on here, I’m so up for it! Name calling and toxicity, I’m not- I will block immediately. Hope everyone finds their joy. ❤️
Your moment of banjo zen, this fine saturday - fellow North Carolinian Elizabeth Cotten playing Georgie Buck on her banjo. She's massive in the lineage.
Guys!!! Guys!!! Statues don’t talk! You want some history? Crack a book! Fund education! Raise teachers salaries! Oh so many choices. And put the statue in a museum if you simply must as long as the plaque talks about how we used to celebrate slavery with statues.
There’s nothing I love more than stripping things back for some old time jams. The sound you’re hearing comes from a gourd viola & banjo made by

. They’re reproductions of instruments from the 1800s & with them they bring back the history & voices of our ancestors
Throw back to 2018 when I recorded some vids for the Met, in the instrument room. I was looking for a video of Etta Baker playing Cripple Creek but I can't find one yet - so here's me doing her version of it. She has this wicked third part that I love.
Proud to share that I will be stepping in to replace

My keenest desire for Silkroad is a sharpening and reinterpretation of what it means for the ‘right now.’

Hi all! So looking forward to my September tour. I’ve thought about this long and hard, and have decided that all of my shows will require vax or tests at the door. All our venues have worked to make this happen or already had those requirements in place—which has been wonderful.

During the summer of 2020 I was struggling... I was locked down while protests raged across America & I felt furious, despairing, impotent. When I don’t know where else to turn—I let the emotion and spirit & ancestral connection speak through me. “Build a House” was the result.
My last day as an Artist-In-Residence as part of the Southern Futures project in conjunction with

Well, after 18 years, I was afforded the opportunity to return to the operatic stage—and my first time, at age 44, in a professional production. I have been blessed with a first rate cast and production team and feel so incredibly grateful to be able to do this.

He’s deserving of life whether he plays classical music or not; whether he excels in paper school or not; nobody on earth deserves to be shot in the head for ringing the wrong doorbell. And yes….the gun. The gun. The gun.

First they stole our bodies
Then they stole our sons
Then they stole our God
And gave us a new one
Then they stole our beauty
The comfort in our skins
Then they gave us duty
And they gave us sin...

Just because I highlight long erased and forgotten black co-creators of American roots music doesn’t mean I don’t believe there were white ones- it’s there in the ‘co’. I mean, do I really have to keep saying this?
Oh my goodness my hands are starting to crack with all the hand washing but let me take this moment to appreciate that I have clean running water to wash them in. Not everyone does.
After looking at the lyrics of this modern ballad, I did the folk thing. Brought it into my time, space, emotions — so it morphed, swirled, & suddenly Sally Ann came through my banjo. Grateful to be part of
@MsAliceRandall
’s black girl magic reclamation.

I got the 'Rona, y'all. Dang - after all the flying, travelling and touring, i got it in my own house. Thankfully my symptoms are not too bad - thanks J&J for keeping it mild! But unfortunately this means as a result this weekend’s shows will have to be cancelled.
Just the fact that it was EVER in question is enough to know how much work we gotta do still. But a step, the veriest small step.
