New guys Armstrong, Stephenson and Diekman have pumped some life into this bullpen lately, however I do think TB will look to add to it by the deadline
Here’s a thread of RP’s who I think fit the Rays mold and make sense as trade targets. Will add a few names every week
🧵⬇️
What a win. Rays win a wild one and take the series from the NL’s best team.
They’re 39-16, and this offense is just relentless. Tampa Bay leads MLB in ALL of the hitting categories below:
Last year the Rays made four trades to add controllable hitters to the offense. Their stats since joining TB:
Isaac Paredes
525 PA, 124 wRC+, 3.8 WAR
Harold Ramirez
555 PA, 128 wRC+, 2.2 WAR
Jose Siri
254 PA, 100 wRC+, 1.8 WAR
Christian Bethancourt
250 PA, 103 wRC+, 1.7 WAR
Pete Fairbanks is just on an entirely new level this year. Fastball has ridiculous velo and carry, slider is dropping more than ever.
17.2 IP, 26 K, 1 BB, 1.53 ERA on the season.
Statcast has him as the best reliever in baseball by a good margin:
#Rays
LH pitching prospect Patrick Wicklander’s pro career is off to a tremendous start. His stats since joining the TB org:
18.1 IP, 38 K, 3 BB, 0.00 ERA
He was selected out of Arkansas in the 8th round of last year’s draft:
The Shane McClanahan news is brutal, but I just don’t see how you can put any blame on the Rays for this.
He averaged just 86.7 pitches per start this year, bottom 10 among qualifiers. He also pitched on extra rest in over half of his starts. TB was very cautious, stuff happens.
The Rays selected Ian Leatherman out of Central Michigan University in the 16th round of last year’s draft.
Today he retired big league hitters with ease, showing off a riding 93-96 mph FB and an 83-85 mph SL with good shape as well.
Randy Arozarena has now played 162 games in a
#Rays
uniform (incl. postseason). His total numbers:
.287 AVG
.368 OBP
.532 SLG
.900 OPS
36 HR, 16 SB, 116 R
#RaysUp
Richie Palacios ripped this ball at a 109.6 EV, harder than anything he hit in the majors or AAA last year.
His contact skills and swing decisions are already very good. The Rays are going to have a very useful player here if this bump in power is real.
A look at new Rays minor league signing Naoyuki Uwasawa. Last year in Japan he threw 170 innings with a 2.96 ERA and a 124:40 K:BB ratio.
Strong command profile and throws a good splitter off of a high spin fastball. Uses many other secondaries as well.
Harold Ramirez is hitting .327/.375/.449 in 216 PA this year. His 142 wRC+ is the 16th highest mark in the AL.
He was acquired for Esteban Quiroz, a 30-year old prospect who is hitting .163/.300/.245 in AAA this year.
On August 15th the Yankees were 5.5 games out of first place in the AL East. They proceeded to win 11 of their next 12 games and now currently sit...
5.5 games out of first place.
Remarkable play by the
#Rays
lately who have also won 11 of their last 12.
#RaysUp
Since FanGraphs began tracking minor league stats in 2006, there have only been 3 hitters to post a 150 wRC+ or better while also striking out less than 12% of the time. Career minors:
Franco
.332/.398/.536, 7.9 K%
Vlad Jr.
.331/.414/.531, 11.0 K%
Betts
.316/.408/.472, 10.4 K%
The
#Rays
have won 20 of their last 29 games, the 4th best record in MLB over that span.
In total they’re 30 games over .500, on pace for 99 wins, and own the 2nd best run differential in MLB.
1.5 GB of first place. One month left.
The
#Rays
have a special hitter on their hands in Kyle Manzardo. No player in minor league baseball is striking out less (17.4 K%), walking more (15.2 BB%), and hitting for more power (.311 ISO) than Manzardo is this year
WOW. Some shocking news here, didn’t think this was a 2023 possibility.
Caminero’s bat is amongst the best in the minors, he has legitimately great power and bat speed. Real superstar traits in here. Not sure how he’ll be used, but extremely exciting stuff.
BREAKING: The Tampa Bay Rays are calling up top infield prospect Junior Caminero, sources tell ESPN. Caminero, 20, will make the leap from AA, where he was hitting .309/.373/.548 with 20 HR in 314 ABs.
News, free and unlocked, at ESPN:
Post-lockout the
#Rays
are expected to add a RH corner bat. Here's an interesting possible target: Isaac Paredes.
Still just 22 yrs old, career .272/.361/.424 (125 wRC+), 13.2 K% in the minors but has struggled in MLB. He appears blocked in DET (Candelario, Miggy, Schoop, Tork)
Rays win and take the series in Boston. 43 wins on the year is five more than the next closest team.
Wander Franco was on base three more times today. His 3.2 WAR on the season leads all of MLB. He just turned 22 in March.
The first pitch Shintaro Fujinami throws in a Orioles uniform, a 99.4 mph FB, is blasted 359 feet for a HR by Jose Siri. That’s 20 on the year for him. A great find by the Rays at last years trade deadline.
This kid has superstar written all over him. He’s got just as many home runs as he does *strikeouts* (12) in his last 101 plate appearances. Just turned 20 this summer.
#Rays
are reportedly calling up 26-year old UTIL Miles Mastrobuoni today. He plays six different positions and has hit at every stop in the minors. 2022 stats in AAA:
568 PA, 16 HR, 23 SB
.300/.377/.469 (126 wRC+)
11.0 BB%, 16.6 K%
As if things aren’t good enough already for the Rays, prospect Kyle Manzardo is setting new MaxEV records and has a .979 OPS and 14.3 K% as a 22 year old in AAA. I don’t think it’s crazy to call him the best hitter in minor league baseball.
Out of all traded hitters this deadline, here are the leaders in Win Probability Added since 7/31 (Peralta’s first game with TB):
1. David Peralta 0.64
2. Emmanuel Rivera 0.57
3. Brandon Drury 0.51
4. Robbie Grossman 0.44
5. Juan Soto 0.44
Clutch production so far from the 🚂
Rays finish up August going 18-9, the best record in the AL. 2 games up on the last wild card Toronto, 6 back of New York in the division.
The final 6 games between Tampa Bay and New York are coming up these next two weekends. This is the good stuff.
Career wRC+ leaders among second basemen in the last 100 years of this sport (min. 1500 PA):
1. 179 - Rogers Hornsby
2. 135 - Jackie Robinson
3. 135 - Joe Morgan
4. 134 - Brandon Lowe
Taj Bradley with 3IP, 0R, 0BB today in his spring debut against NYY starters. He touched 98 and flashed a new sharper curveball which was up 3 ticks from last year.
Despite some struggles last year, Taj still posted a top-25 K-BB% and remains a very exciting young arm.
At the end of June, Rays have the second best team ERA in MLB, and these reinforcements have been a big reason why. Since joining the team:
Shawn Armstrong
15 IP, 1.20 ERA, 24.6 K%
Jake Diekman
16.2 IP, 2.16 ERA, 37.5 K%
Robert Stephenson
10.2 IP, 2.53 ERA, 37.5 K%
Christian Bethancourt could be a sneaky good bench bat/backup C & 1B deadline addition. It’s his first year back in MLB since 2017 and he is crushing the ball. 90th+ percentile in Barrel rate, Max EV & avg EV. Rays are second to last in team barrel rate this year
Hell of a season. 99 wins and the most runs scored & homers hit by a Rays team ever. All of this despite many things not going their way this season.
Rangers come to town on Tuesday.
Curtis Mead has been reportedly called up per
@TBTimes_Rays
. He has been scorching hot since returning from the IL in late June:
127 PA
.333/.433/.505 (139 wRC+)
15.0 BB%, 7.9 K% (!!)
He has more XBH (14) than strikeouts (10) during this span
Ryan Pepiot finishes the day with 5 IP, 0 BB, 6 K’s, and only 1 hit allowed.
His fastball was a tick harder and had three more inches of ride than it averaged last year. He’s also started working in a new low 80’s curve.
He’s going to be a big part of this Rays rotation📈
Biggest series of the year on deck, 4 games in Baltimore. Rays are currently 2 games back and FanGraphs has them at 29% odds to take the division.
Here’s a scenario tree showing what’s at play. The only way Rays can win the H2H tiebreaker is if they sweep this series:
The fifteen
#Rays
players currently on the IL combined for 24.1 WAR last season, which was 48% of the Rays total WAR and is more than six entire teams were able to produce in 2021
We are almost 40% of the way through the 2023 season and Luke Raley has the 3rd best wRC+ in the entire sport.
1. A. Judge 188
2. Y. Diaz 176
3. L. Raley 165
4. Y. Alvarez 164
5. R. Acuna Jr. 161
#Raysup
Rays have signed reliever Phil Maton per
@Feinsand
. He posted a 3.00 ERA & 3.74 FIP with Houston last year.
He doesn’t throw hard but does have breaking balls with elite spin and movement. Leads to weak contact, chases, and whiffs. Has been durable too.
Ji-Man Choi is a career .362/.523/.617 hitter in pinch-hit opportunities. His 207 wRC+ in those spots is the highest of any hitter with at least 65 pinch-hit plate appearances in the last 20 years
For the “Rays pull pitchers out of thin air” crowd:
Kevin Kelly was widely available in the R5 draft and had an excellent 2022 season. Rays saw the talent, found a way to add him despite a very tight roster, and are now watching him thrive. Organizational buy-in and execution📈
Wander Franco is hitting .338/.388/.537 (159 wRC+) over his last 50 regular season games. His 7.3 K% is also the lowest among all qualified hitters during that span.
Through his first 19 games of big league play, Jonathan Aranda has shown a:
- 96th percentile chase rate
- 96th percentile hard-hit rate
- 84th percentile swinging strike rate
Slashing .302/.375/.465 to start his career
#Rays
are signing LHP Jake Diekman to a big league deal per
@JeffPassan
. He was DFA’d by Chicago last week after struggling mightily with command.
His stuff still looks quite sharp though. Touching 97 with two distinct breakers: a tight low 90’s cutter and a bigger sweeper.
The
#Rays
are 21-10 in the second half, 3rd best record in MLB. Doing this at a time where many pitchers have gone down with injury is so impressive. The arms due to join TB over the next 2 weeks:
Anderson
Archer
Fairbanks
Feyereisen
D. Robertson
Thompson
Wisler
#RaysUp
The
#Rays
have called up RHP Tommy Romero. He’s got an extreme over-the-the-top slot which allows him to throw a great back-spinning fastball with huge ride. CB/SL/CH are his secondaries.
His 2.33 ERA is the lowest in minor league baseball since 2019 (min. 160 IP)
Out of every single hitter selected in the 2021 draft, only one of them ran a sub-13 K% and a SLG above .600 during their first stint in pro ball. (Min. 40 PA)
That would be 21 year-old 1B Kyle Manzardo. Expect him to move fast in this
#Rays
system
The guy just can’t stop pulling dingers. 2 more tonight.
Paredes now has 1.8 WAR on the season which ranks 2nd among all big league 3rd basemen. (Chapman has 2.3)
The team that saw Wander Franco, Randy Arozarena, Luis Patiño, Shane McClanahan, and Taylor Walls graduate from prospect status in 2021 still has the 2nd best farm system in the game
Highest career wRC+ in
#Rays
history:
1. Yandy Diaz 134
2. Randy Arozarena 128
3. Carlos Pena 127
4. Brandon Lowe 127
5. Evan Longoria 123
min. 1500 PA
David Peralta is a trade candidate that I like. Completely revamped his swing this year and is hitting many more flyballs and barrels than he ever has. He’s hitting .266/.322/.500 (122 wRC+) vs RHP and is still a plus OF defender. Would be a rental.
Jeffrey Springs was DFA'd by Boston a year and a half ago. His 2022 stats:
132.1 IP, 2.9 fWAR
26.3 K%, 5.6 BB%
2.45 ERA, 3.06 FIP
His 2.45 ERA is the 7th best mark among big league starters (min. 130 IP)
If you are one of the people saying “what the Rays are doing isn’t that impressive because of their weak schedule”, then how come no team has done this in the last 84 years?
It’s an incredible run.
Wow! Rays have landed the youngest starting pitcher on the market (Eflin is 28y 7m old)
Initial thoughts: An elite strike thrower with a wide array of pitches, has done an excellent job at inducing soft contact. Will be digging in more.
Unfortunate that Taj Bradley couldn’t get out of that inning, but what an excellent start to his big league career:
9 GS, 43 IP
3.98 ERA, 2.67 FIP
63 K, 15 BB
He is the third youngest pitcher in the sport
Shawn Armstrong has been just exceptional for the Rays this season. His ranks among the 463 pitchers who have thrown 20+ innings this year:
0.62 ERA (1st)
2.04 xERA (6th)
2.27 FIP (8th)
He’s recorded more than 3 outs in over half of his outings as well
Since being traded to the Rays, Brett Phillips has produced 3.8 WAR in just 409 plate appearances. That's a 5.6 WAR per 600 PA pace which is among the league leaders over this span. The Rays are so good at putting players in positions to succeed and Phillips has done exactly that
Over the past 60 days Francisco Mejia is hitting .330/.360/.532 across 114 plate appearances. His 160 wRC+ in that stretch is the highest among all big league catchers
#RaysUp
What’s so neat about these extensions is the public consensus at the time was that TB gave too much to get these guys. Bauers too much for Diaz, Solak too much for Fairbanks, Hernandez too much for Springs
Rays firm belief in their evals has led to so much team & player success
