We can now confirm the fantastic news that
#bitterns
are breeding once again at Leighton Moss - a real

success. Click here to read the story - Picture by John Bridges
In these worrying times it's great to have some good news: last night we had 3
#bitterns
booming! This is the first time that we've had 3 boomers since 1999. With more than 40 avocets here &
#skydancing
marsh harriers it's a great time to get out & enjoy the onset of
#spring
!
Our
#volunteer
Paula managed to get this shot of a
#waxwing
on her phone yesterday while the work party were busy coppicing up on Warton Crag - given how few there are around this year, lots of local
#birders
will be hoping this one stays put for a while!
One of our visitors, Jeanie Lazenby, managed to photograph a rarity at Grisedale Hide this evening. This Squacco Heron is the first recorded sighting of this species in Lancashire for 93 years! Keep your eyes out tomorrow and please report all sightings back to the Visitor Centre
Well, this looks quite promising... 😉
The first
#osprey
to inspect our new nest platform was seen by lots of people visiting today! Even more saw it on the screen in the cafe!
Fingers crossed this becomes a regular sight in the next couple of years.
#builditandtheywillcome
While preparing the hides to open, we were somewhat distracted by this little display right outside the window at the Eric
#Morecambe
Hide. This young
#kingfisher
was obviously still keen to be fed - not so sure the adult male was in agreement!
@Natures_Voice
After an absence of several weeks, around 30-40,000
#starlings
displayed over the main reserve reedbeds this afternoon before settling to roost. Hopefully, this is the start of a regular pattern and we should see daily
#murmurations
for the next month or so!🤞
@BBCSpringwatch
They may have taken their time but up to 100,000
#starlings
are now roosting at Leighton Moss. Currently favouring the southern part of the reserve & Barrow Scout, they are best looked for from Grisedale or Lilian’s hides & the
#Skytower
.
This cracking adult night heron was unfortunately in an area with no public access and close to sensitive breeding
#birds
in mid-June - so we couldn't put the news out at the time. Makes one wonder what else has been out there undiscovered!

It’s looking like the
#murmuration
may get going a little earlier this year - already c20,000

coming to roost at our Barrow Scout reedbeds. Watch this space! Pic from archive by Darren Andrews
A great deal of work has gone into improving
#bittern
habitat on and around Leighton Moss in recent years and it continues to pay off - monitoring reveals at least FIVE males currently tuning-up! It's
#Boom
-time!
Visitors in Lower Hide were treated to spectacular views of a Purple Heron at c7:20am this morning, seemingly posing for pictures for 30mins, before it headed towards Causeway. It has since been seen (c9:45am) flying across Causeway Pool, towards Lilian's Hide.

#bitterns
booming loudly from the Causeway this morning. We're carrying out coordinated surveys in coming days to determine just how many are present on the reserve. Up to 5 have been heard so far, the greatest number since the early 1990s!

Our wardening team had a nice surprise yesterday when they found this early spotted crake on an area of the reserve with no public access. After drawing a blank in 2018 let's hope we hear

🎵 Waxwing... you make my heart sing... 🎵
These gorgeous northern nomads have been popping up all over the place as they range far & wide in search of berries & a flock of up to 17

Absolute scenes from the reserve this afternoon as c60,000

Look at this stunning snap of a Morecambe Bay sunset, taken by our site manager Jarrod Sneyd on Monday evening. The Bay isn't just a beautiful landscape - it’s also designated as a Special Protection Area, a haven for declining species like redshank:
This cracking common crane was in fields just to the north of the reserve today (between Silverdale & Arnside) before flying south toward Leighton Moss mid-afternoon. Keep your eyes 👀 peeled! Pic by Jarrod Sneyd
Wonderful to see our first
#fledged
young marsh harrier emerging from the nest this morning! A little bit of a wobbly maiden flight but always a real treat to see.
How many more will we spot in the coming days?

Great news - there were two
#bitterns
heard booming on the reserve this morning. These lovely, calm bright mornings are perfect for listening out for this most unusual of

sounds & heralds the start of another nesting season!

A great morning at Grisedale hide today with at least 3 marsh harriers occasionally disturbing the good numbers of wildfowl (shoveler looking skyward!) - also close views of pintail, little grebe...Red deer stag with 4 hinds. Great nature moments 😀 Lots of snipe on pool edges.
There's a whole lot o' booming going on at Leighton Moss right now as our male

are busy tuning up in an effort to appeal to the females. Read our latest

Catch of the day! This dazzling wood warbler was caught & ringed on the reserve this morning. What a cracker - imagine just how far this little sprite will fly to its tropical African wintering grounds!

Stunner of a

this afternoon. Activity from c3.40pm through to 4.15pm, c65,000 birds - best viewed from Skytower for the full eye-level experience or Causeway. Simply amazing.
The Bay is one of the most special places in Europe for birds. Waders feed & rest here. It’s also a beautiful place for people to enjoy incl. a walk with our dogs. It’s best for the birds not to be constantly disturbed as they were by this dog, not under control, last night.
Great to have our first

of the year feeding over the reserve this morning - they came in with an influx of house martins. Always a wonderful sight!

We are thrilled to hear that
@EdenProject
has secured funding for Eden Project Morecambe! We are sure that the wonderful landscapes and rich biodiversity of Morecambe Bay will delight their visitors.
Not only are the bitterns booming, but one individual is regularly being seen in the close by cut area from Causeway Hide. This bittern seems to be very happy to pose for photos - don't forget to tag us in your pictures if you're visiting this weekend!

It's been a bearded tit bonanza here today - lovely sunny conditions & lots of activity on the grit trays. Along with marsh harriers, whooper swan, bitterns & godwits galore it's an amazing time to visit!

Lovely evening last night and then afternoon today - on Morecambe Bay Special Protection Area. Bit of artistic licence with camera modes with the sunset - then spent time mesmerised by black-tailed godwits on Silverdale shore on today's falling tide.
Ever changing Morecambe Bay. These boulders appeared just recently near Silverdale. Cord-grass is colonising the sand elsewhere; a sign that saltmarsh could return. Bird feeding areas change too. Wherever they are, they provide vital sustenance for birds like knot & oystercatcher
Morecambe Bay is a Special Protection Area & Site of Special Scientific Interest for its bird interest. The saltmarsh pools host many of those special birds. They change every day - season, weather, tide. Great today with black-tailed godwit, ruff, knot & dunlin showing well
As well as Leighton being full of wildlife, the Allen pool was a delight last night. Lovely light & clouds - calling redshank with pink-footed geese overhead - so evocative. Spotted redshank (3) as well. Finally, just before dark, a spoonbill dropped in & walked right in front!
Big thanks again to

Whoosh!, “Wow”, “Amazing”. Last night the starlings came flooding in waves over the Visitor Centre and then delivered a murmuration spectacle from the Sky tower. ‘Dancing on clouds’ (not ice!). They dropped in to the right of the Sky tower. Incredible. Full points!!!
Early mornings at Leighton Moss are just amazing. The first 3 images were early morning yesterday & the last is the light at just after 5 am this morning. Bittern booming, lots of warblers singing - grasshopper, garden, reed, sedge, willow - & blackcap & chiffchaff ....WOW!
We have the first confirmed sighting of bearded tits using our grit trays
@Leighton_moss
. Over the next few weeks we can look forward to lots of sightings of these lovely birds! Photo credit: Richard Cousens.

It's a great time of year! when BRITAIN'S BEST BITTERNS BOOM BEST IN BRITAIN'S BONNIEST BOG & the STARLINGS MURMURATE at the same time. As the days get longer, starlings roost later & our Centre opening hours will help going forward. From FEB 1st we go back to 5 PM for the spring
Fantastic to be immersed in the
#starlings
experience (but under cover!). Birds started to come in between 3.30 and 3.40 pm again - moved to Jackson Hide to get closer and they were still swirling around (going around in circles?) until about 4.30 pm
We heard our first
#bittern
'mini-boom' this morning. A male was heard 'grunting' from the reeds to the south of the Causeway - these birds often start tuning up in advance of the full booming for which they're famous - how many will we hear this

The water levels are dropping slightly day by day (though you still need

Despite my saying on
@BBCLancashire
this morning that
#bitterns
can be hard to see at this time of year - we’ve been getting amazing flight views just lately! Earlier today a pair were cavorting high above the reeds much to the delight of many visitors!

@Shigufta1
Absolute scenes down the causeway this evening! Booming bittern, a gull calling bittern and 4 otters running towards me on the causeway!! Stunning sunset too!
Incredible sight and sound of hundreds of black tailed godwits ferociously feeding in front of Lilian’s hide (with a couple of ruff and a bold water rail in the Warden’s newly cut areas at the front)
#RSPBEcology
Fabulous
#bittern
activity this evening: 3 gull-calling birds circling the reserve while a male boomed from the reed bed. A 5th bird was seen at Barrow Scout. Plus c10,000+ starling
#murmuration
& displaying marsh harriers. Wow!
Leighton Moss & Morecambe Bay is about BIGGER, BETTER more CONNECTED landscapes for ALL NATURE. This winter the warden team continued management to create varied structure & open space for flowers & rare butterflies - space for blue-moor grass & dog violets, both flowering now.
The
#starling
#murmuration
was over the main reserve this afternoon, before the birds went to roost near Causeway.
Skytower is probs the best place to look from for now, as you should see them wherever they go.

It has been a bumper week for bearded tit sightings on the grit trays, a sure sign of autumn. Red deer stags are have also been seen clashing antlers, warming up ahead of the rut. Who’s planning their weekend visit? (📸 by J Sneyd)
