WotC noticed that we were breaking the game by using Action Surge to cast two leveled spells per turn, so they're specifically prohibiting Action Surge from using the Magic action in the new UA. But the Eldritch Knight can cast spells during the Attack action now. Sneaky.

Did you know that in #DnD5e , each missile in Magic Missile is a separate damage roll? This has some fun rules implications, most notably that each missile triggers things like Concentration saves. 3 missiles against one target? They have to roll for Concentration three times!

A while ago DnDBeyond published a free Bilgewater supplement which had 3 subclasses, some setting info, and a short adventure. I published an optimization article the day AFTER DnDBeyond silently pulled it and proceeded to pretend it never existed at all.

Controversial #DnD opinion: More classes should be MAD. Balancing needs for multiple ability scores adds interesting decision points which encourage build diversity to support different capabilities within a class. Wizards only needing Int to do literally everything is boring.

#DnD5e 's Strixhaven includes a 4-part adventure that takes you to level 10+ over the course of 4 years at a magical university. That implies that a magical bachelor's degree is a wizard at level 10 or higher. A 1st-level wizard is the equivalent of "some college" on your résumé.

Fizban's introduces a new thing called Draconic Gifts. One lets you cast Find Familiar to get a pseudodragon. A sorcerer can finally get a familiar without a feat or a class dip! Then they can cast Dragon's Breath so pseudodragons finally get a breath weapon! Dreams fulfilled!

Shitty magic item idea for you @RRollplaying : Deck of many Decks. Assemble a real-world deck, each card from a different type of cards (magic, monopoly chance cards, etc.). Cards are drawn the same way as Deck of Many Things. Effects are decided via argument.

The new OGL 1.1 is reportedly 9k words, 10x times 1.0a. That likely means 10 pages added to the end of every OGL product. That alone presents a significant cost barrier which will make it hard to justify smaller projects. Imagine a 10-page zine with 10 pages of license.

Importantly, it's qualifying REVENUE, not profit. This means it's your "top line" number BEFORE YOU PAY COSTS. So if you make $100 and $90 of it goes to printing, etc., you pay royalties on the $100. Therein lies the problem.

Character I want to play: Hubert Manfighter (“Hue” for short), the human fighter. Totally non-magical. Primary function in the party is to audibly marvel at all the wacky fantasy nonsense that the party does. Never ceases to be amazed by spells and dragon breath and such.

A #DnD5e ranger with Deft Explorer and Favored Enemy learns a total of 5 languages just from class features. Add 2 from a background and 2 from most races, and a ranger can easily know 9 languages without feats, magic, etc. Rangers have zero Face skills.

Does it bother anyone else that we haven’t gotten more familiar options for Pact of the Chain? We don’t have celestials, elementals, undead, or constructs. Not one new option since the PHB. Suggestions: lantern archon, mephits, crawling claw, and homunculus.

Weird idea: would people listen to audiobook versions of RPG sourcebooks? Probably not the player options and listy parts, but what about the “how to play” stuff, the rules, and the lore?

Artificer BBEG: I've got 30 AC and resistance on saves against spells. I'm unstoppable. PC Wizard: Okay, but are you immune to Heat Metal? Because that full plate looks an awful lot like an oven from where I'm standing. Artificer: Fire resistance? Wizard: Fine, a slow-cooker.

Lightning Bolt has always been worse than Fireball because it’s so hard to hit more than 2 targets with a straight line. I’ve never seen a straight lightning bolt. So, insane idea: what if you could bend the path very slightly after it hit something? Like 45 degrees max.

Hunter Ranger 3 / Paladin 2+ Take Collossus Slayer at Ranger 3. Use a greataxe. Apply basic poison. Cast Hunter's Mark and use Divine Smite. Roll 1d20 to attack, then roll 1d12+2d10+1d8+1d6+1d4+Str damage. That's exactly every die in a standard set of 7 dice.

Can we take a moment to acknowledge what a disappointing name "Improved Pact Weapon" is? It's literally the worst-named invocation. Every other invocation name sounds really exciting, but Improved Pact Weapon is just like "gooder sword". It sounds like a placeholder name.

I love that this many years into writing about #DnD5e , I still occasionally find things about the game that I didn't know. Example: Sanctuary doesn't require Concentration, so you can put it on everyone in your party one at a time and be almost untouchable. It's fun to learn.
