Met a lot of women like #JACKIEWEAVER calm, intelligent, purposeful, patient, focussed on the issues. I’ve also met a lot of angry, power crazed men who can’t cope with a woman having authority. Raising a glass tonight 🍷 to all the Jackie Weavers in local government & beyond 🙌

Beyond the humour, the behaviour Jackie Weaver experienced is common place in all levels of politics. Good on her for sticking to it, but people doing their best in local politics, especially women, shouldn't have to put up with that. Deeply off-putting to younger generations.

A basic rule of leadership for me is always recruit people who are much better than you. People who bring insight, wisdom, thoughtfulness add great value to the team. But so many leaders seem scared of talent that is better than them. They see it as a threat when it’s a strength

How we feel about work comes mainly from our relationship with our manager. Their ability to listen deeply & empathy towards us is a strong indicator of how happy we are in our jobs; yet empathetic leadership isn’t prized in person specs or generally encouraged by organisations.

Had a sad conversation with a former colleague today. They said “I love your tweets. You say what I think but can’t say. I’m really sorry I don’t “like” them but leaders in my organisation police people’s twitter likes. It’s career suicide” is this normal in an open NHS culture?

We won’t be remembered for our job titles, how high we climbed in management structures, plaudits received. We’ll be remembered for how we made people feel, especially those with no voice, the actual difference we made to people’s lives & the light in the eyes of those we love.

I think the raw anger people are feeling comes partly from a sense of unfairness but mainly from fear. A fear that nobody is really in control or taking any responsibility. A vacuum in leadership; dithering yet arrogant, defensive, deaf, centralised & increasingly in panic mode.

In my personal experience the most fiercely ambitious people are the worst to appoint into senior roles. The indefatigable self belief & drive to be boss is normally in inverse proportion to their actual effectiveness as a leader & the respect they have amongst frontline staff.

Most of us will have worked with people who shamelessly steal our ideas & badge them as their own. It’s so annoying 🙈 Let’s always make a point of crediting the person who thought of the thing - not their manager or another more important team member; it makes them shine & grow!

This is so true. Burnout isn’t about the volume of work - it’s your soul being crushed by keep trying to improve things when some people & organisations are resistant to change. Amazing people leave because they are ignored as their ideas are seen as too challenging @helenbevan

After suffering career burnout for the past 4-5 years, here's how I've come to understand its cause: Burnout is a response to repeated attempts to make meaningful change while lacking the agency to do so. See problems > try to fix them > get shot down or ignored.

Teams with a toxic culture can have a covert “favoured child” mentality. Those who don’t try hard enough to please the parent/leader are excluded. Freethinking people are excluded as the parent/leader requires all the limelight & control. “In” & “out” people encourage compliance.

Me & my Grandad Charlie O’Neill outside their rented house in Halliwell, Bolton. He was one of 11 children with an alcoholic Mum. An Irish immigrant who met his wife in the cotton mill down the road. He adored his family & made a life here after a bad start. We are all immigrants

I’ve missed moments like this in the last 18 months. Leaving a mtg in Oldham, Darren the town hall porter [worked for the Council 27 years ❤️ his job ❤️ people ❤️Oldham] shouts “quick I need to show you something but you need to run!” the 14th floor is best to see a lovely sunset

The higher up leaders get in organisations & systems the further they can get from real people, frontline staff, citizens. Leaders can often end up at the shallow end of the reality pool surrounded by yes 👍 people & sycophants whose own self interest overrides everything else.

Leaders who keep saying: - It’s essential that you go through me for all decisions. - Don’t speak to my team without copying me into your emails. - Hierarchy & seniority is paramount in my book & I won’t let junior people take decisions. They just aren’t leaders at all 🙈

How to spot a culture problem? A few signs to look deeper: - staff seem scared when asked to speak honestly - boards meet positive staff only who all tell polished stories - reducing staff survey returns reveal declining levels of trust & wellbeing - relentless spin A 🧵…….

Integrated Care Systems can get overly stressed about governance & structure charts without figuring out what difference they are actually trying to make. There’s a danger 5 year strategies could become the same as Local Strategic Partnerships - lots of warm words but zero action

If you did this in an NHS Trust or a council it would be gross misconduct probably followed by a custodial sentence. Thank you @BylineTimes for breaking the story & @nytimes for great investigative journalism 🙏

We analyzed a large segment of the spending spree — roughly 1,200 contracts worth nearly $22 billion. About $11 billion went to firms either run by friends and associates of Conservative Party politicians, or with no experience or a history of controversy.

I can’t imagine being brought up believing you’re born to rule - must be strange. I was brought up by a trade unionist Dad whose beliefs were shaped by witnessing his friend being killed in a factory accident. He taught me values & equality are everything

The most important thing I’ve learned in my life is how to spot a fake; those people who quickly shift loyalty based on where power lies not values. They gravitate towards hierarchy; swayed by positions of power that make them look important, salary increases & personal profile.

A 4 week old company with experience in “wealth management” & selling yachts given 122 million of public money for PPE. Registered in a tax haven like JRM’s company who pay no corporation tax to fund the NHS or public services. Sorry for carping again but it’s a bloody disgrace.

The relationship between manager & staff is the most highly correlated factor in happiness at work. A top boss: - delegates with confidence - praises great work - doesn’t micromanage - champions, elevates & inspires - steps forward when needed - steps back to watch others shine

Good luck to interview candidates for 42 integrated care system CEOs this week. Important choices - performance management of status quo? or deep system & workforce transformation? We need people with a passion for care that seamlessly wraps support around people & communities 🙏

The best leaders are not at all competitive. They aren’t constantly trying to outdo their peers [even behind their backs], stamp their higher authority on their team or demonstrate their superiority. There is no need. The team & the collective achievement of outcomes is their job

In Bolton our rate increases by 20 - 30% per day. We are seeing it go up in 5 other Greater Manchester boroughs. Surge vaccination is now urgent. The words of WHO’s Michael Ryan have never been so relevant “SPEED trumps PERFECTION in a pandemic” seriously what are we waiting for?

In the last week of her life we love bombed her with cat nip plants (cocaine for cats) to roll in & eat, sardines, kitten milk & loads of fuss. She transformed into a crazy 20 year old kitten. All her senses came alive. She’s now buried next to her brother under a cat nip bush.

"We lost 10 surveyors who had over 230 years' experience and there was one replacement - who was a graduate." Speaking through tears a buildings control officer responsible for Grenfell, who quit his job weeks before the fire, says austerity cuts made the job impossible.

People taking on leadership roles can sometimes change how they treat others because they are now more senior. They pick & choose who they spend time with, gravitating to the most influential people in the room. They forget people can see these changes & don’t like what they see.
