In a moment transcending sports, Blake Cerveny @burke_XCTF collapsed at A-Districts w/ 75 meters to go. No hope of finishing. Brandon Schutt @BellevueEastXC gave up 3 spots to stop, pull him up, and support him to the finish. Under new rule, Schutt is not DQ’d. Incredible act.

A cool, spontaneous moment at the State meet. We had a long delay before the girls 100 heats due to a re-race in a Class C 110 hurdles. The Class A competitors joined in prayer, led by an athlete from Lincoln High.

Emmett Hassenstab was paralyzed in a diving accident less than 14 months ago. Left a rehab hospital to walk in his family’s ‘virtual’ 4x100 2021 for the Cornhusker State Games. Ran - not walked - the CSG family 4x100 today. The miracles continue.

RaeAnn Thompson qualified for the 100 and 200 finals yesterday despite a significant injury. She couldn’t finish the 100 today and had to be helped off the track. She returned to walk the 200 final in 1:44, supported by a roaring crowd. Resilience matters. T&F matters.

Emily Sisson, who won State XC titles at @marianhsxc and @MillardNorth_XC in '06 & '07 before competing at Wisconsin and Providence, just broke the US marathon record in 2:18:29 at Chicago. Keri D'Amato set the previous record of 2:19:12 in January 2022. An absolute stud.

In 5 years, I've had 2 stories go viral. The 1st involved a runner who finished last in nearly every race. The 2nd was about a runner who needed help from a competitor to finish his race. That speaks volumes about our sport. In 2022, celebrate the effort, not the outcome.
