I promise I'm not on a commission from
@DMLiveWiki
but LOOK AT THIS. Taken from a Whistle Test segment in 86, this is Fly On The Windscreen from the Black Celebration tour and it's just GREAT, both performance and quality. Full video here 👇
#DepecheMode
Robert Smith and The Cure are currently making those of us (me included) who said that ticket pricing is out of Depeche Mode's hands look rather stupid.
I missed this off the previous clip - thanks to
@JMode01
for the heads up.
Dave: "Put your phones down for fuck's sake - watch the show!"

#MementoMori
I can't add anything. I want to post a bunch of stuff in appreciation of Fletch but right now I just can't. Tonight is a moment to sit and think, and feel sad. I hope that you're all managing to remember Andrew John Leonard Fletcher in a positive way, with incredible memories.
xx
Depeche Mode can't do anything about ticket prices, right?
"I could go on… The main point is, we decided the ticket prices, and are content that they are fair – we don’t want to price anybody out of the show. Any major artist can do the same."
Haven’t been on here for a while. Still figuring out whether I’ve got the appetite to post silly stuff about Depeche Mode after Fletch going. On the other hand, there’s always a clip that raises the spirits, and here’s Strangelove to put a smile on your face.
I didn't have access to the internet when Ultra was released. From Exciter onwards, I've been a part of the DM online community. And I don't think I can remember a time since then when there was so much positivity about everything DM. Fletch would've loved this. Buckle up folks.
The morning after the night before. It's going to take a long time for me to get my head around, so god knows how his family and friends must be feeling. But Fletch gave us some good laughs over the years - here's his Big Ones interview, with just his bits. It'll make you smile.
Whether it's Depeche Mode or anyone else, the sign of a brilliant pop song is that almost as soon as you put it on, it's over. It passes by in a flash. I've listened to Ghosts Again about a dozen times today and every time it ends, I want to hear it again. It is brilliant.
Just watched a performance of In Your Room from the last tour. I was going to post the video and complain that musically it sounds really thin and sparse and then I thought why bother doing that when we could just watch this absolute PERFECTION.
Love the fact that he has been holding audiences in the palm of his hand for over 40 years, but speaking directly to them he's completely human, appreciates everyone and his own place within the beast that is Depeche Mode. Bravo Dave. Proud to be a fan.
If you're off to Manchester to see Depeche Mode tonight, have a great time! I have it on good authority that they're bringing this one back to the set. You heard it here first.
Well, whether you love Ghosts Again or not, I think we can agree that it's been a pretty good week to be a Depeche Mode fan. And there's plenty more to come. Have a great weekend all! And remember, if anyone shouts at you for having it on repeat... ignore them.
I realise that this isn't a particularly revelatory tweet, we're all thinking this on some level... But with Memento Mori bedding into my consciousness as a GREAT Depeche Mode album and with live shows happening, it's just so shit that Fletch isn't here to enjoy and contribute.
Dave having a little sit down at the Dusseldorf show last night. 61 years old and still one of the most physical front men out there.
[watches video of Mick Jagger performing at 79]
"GET OFF YOUR ARSE LAZY BOLLOCKS"
I think the 101/MFTM version of Things You Said is one of the finest Martin live moments ever. And no I’m not going to be mean about the woman who doesn’t know the words. We’ve all done it. I mean not at a Depeche Mode concert, obviously. I’m not a complete idiot.
Ghosts Again performance from The Late Show. It’s getting better, tighter. Dave’s voice still too up front in the mix but it’s tv. The audience looks a bit lost, where is the swarm when you need it!?
Have a great weekend everybody.
#DepecheMode
Question: how do you take a popular, iconic song from your previous album, put a completely different spin on it and still make it kick arse so hard it launches into space?
Answer:
It’s 1702 days since Depeche Mode left the stage at Waldbühne. I don’t know how 2018 can simultaneously feel so recent and so far away. Actually I do: Covid. But, finally, here we are again. No Fletch, but a brilliant album and a colossal world tour.
Are you ready?
In my opinion, the version of Walking In My Shoes that Depeche Mode played during Tour Of The Universe is second only to the Devotional version. Here they are in rehearsals, it's just absurdly good.
I'm going to watch 101 tomorrow night at 22.00 GMT.
You can join me if you feel up to it. I expect it will be quite emotional. Even if we're not all tweeting it would still be great to share a moment with other Depeche fans.
#Fletch
The next year and a bit are all about Martin and Dave (and of course remembering Fletch), but as usual I will be finding ways to crowbar Alan into proceedings. Here’s a little edit from his auction video. Just casually knocking out a perfect Life On Mars for starters…
That's it then. Except it isn't. Because we're never going to forget
#Fletch
and everything he brought to Depeche Mode, and our lives. Thanks for joining in tonight. There were a few tears shed over here but I'm glad we did it.
xx
Some thoughts about the
#DepecheMode
gig yesterday. First and foremost, it was fucking brilliant. I have enjoyed loads of DM gigs over the past 30+ years, but this one stands out. At one point during Stripped, the bloke next to me turned and said "YOU'RE CRYING".
1/
Some people would argue that Home is peak Martin Gore. And that’s a valid argument, but I am not one of those people. A Question Of Lust will never ever be topped. It’s got everything that makes
#DepecheMode
great.
GOOD MORNING, I trust everyone is nice and relaxed. Don’t think we’ve got much on this week so let’s all take it easy. HAHA. Anyway, have a break from the fevered anticipation and get this into your ears and eyes. That is an order. Waiting For The Night, bare version.
Wrong is an absolute beast of a track and made a return to the set on the Global Spirit tour after being rested during the Delta Machine era. Would you want to see them retain it this time out?
Watching Strange and Strange Too back to back tonight was just bloody wonderful. What a privilege to to have so much love for a band that has been everything to me for almost four decades. I felt the same watching tonight as I did when I was 12 and 15. Magic.
#DepecheMode
Some thought about Ghosts Again from Jimmy Kimmel Live. We're obviously getting closer to a 'live' sound and it's great, much beefier - although Martin's guitar is a disappointingly weedy and thin. Cautious optimism about Christian's drum sounds, we'll see. All in all, wonderful.
Not much I wouldn’t give for the opportunity to hear Depeche Mode play Shout. Nothing since the Some Great Reward tour so I’d say the chances are… slim.
HELLO. I've been on holiday, didn't think I'd be off here for so long though. What can I say, I LOVE Croatia but the villa had crappy wifi. I'm BACK now, and I'd like to illustrate my point of return with Dave's Halo kick, which is here for your viewing pleasure. Polls incoming.
We're kicking off a 'best song on the album' poll - the early days version. It's a knockout competition with each song seeded based on how many nominations it got when I asked about this last week. We'll repeat it in a few months - see if you've all changed your minds!
Well here's a thing that I didn't know existed before today. Depeche Mode perform an acoustic version of Enjoy The Silence in 1998. It'll never catch on.
Not long to wait now… Time to practice that complex arm movement for Never Let Me Down Again. And, as ever, anybody going too soon will face criminal charges.
January 9th is an important day in Depeche Mode history. It’s 35 years exactly since Martin Gore gave an audience member the middle finger while singing The Things You Said, a seismic event that happened at the mighty Newport (leisure) Centre!
Gentle reminder for whoever needs to hear it before the tour: if you want to the extended ending to Personal Jesus this time out, this, THIS is how you do it.
If you're going to the show tonight, have a great time! No O2 gigs for me this time around, but I'll be in Birmingham on Wednesday.
And remember folks: don't watch the whole concert on your phone screen! Who knows if all this happens again - drink it in and make the most of it!
Say ‘Higher Love live’ to any Depeche Mode fan and it will instantly conjure memories of Dave’s epic ‘behind the curtains’ opening of the Devotional Tour. But what about Martin’s version in 2013? Did you see it? (I did but I have a habit of drinking at concerts so no memory…)
Just reading about the death of Brian Griffin, what a shame. Pre-Anton Depeche Mode is often derided as not having a style - and while that was true of their videos, Brian's contribution to their artwork was huge.
I’ve checked my list of ‘things I expect from Depeche Mode in 2023’ and it turns out ‘have Just Can’t Get Enough appear in a movie scene wherein a coked up bear chases down an ambulance’ isn’t on it.
I'm having a bit of a World Violation day today. No official live release from this tour was sort of understandable at the time, now it seems completely mental. Could still be done. Even if the vocals needed a bit of tidying up *cough*AI*cough*
Anyway, Clean, bloody hell.
Clip from the Sounds Of The Universe documentary. Never get tired of seeing them enjoy themselves, whether it’s in the studio, on stage or wherever.
And aaaah… Fletch. [sighs forever]
#DepecheMode
I hope you’ll forgive this sentimental old codger for repeating himself, but it’s nine years to the day that I took my then 8-year-old daughter to see Depeche Mode in Birmingham. The memories of this still choke me up!
Anyone else taken their kids, or planning to?
It’s been a bit of a Devotional week and despite me being tempted to go back to the 80s today, we’ll round it off with this unbelievably euphoric version of Everything Counts. Have a great weekend all!
It's the weekend so let's see you all clapping! This clip of Depeche Mode performing Leave In Silence on The Tube couldn't BE more 1982. It's got everything: new romantic dickhead who's learned a bit of robotics, big hair, out of date punks AND Alan's brown leather jacket. Enjoy!
So whilst the BBC Sounds website may be streaming 10 tracks from the Crystal Palace Devotional gig, here's your reminder that at
@DMLiveWiki
you can stream all 14 tracks that were recorded for broadcast, AND check out how Dave's vocals were overdubbed:
Well.
I really loved it. Didn't expect the reaction I had to be honest. Loved the song (played loud) and loved the video. Reminds me of AC's work with David Sylvian on Red Guitar.
Best lead off single since Wrong.
When singers have been around the block a few times, it's not unusual to hear them start avoiding the high notes. Well not our Martin. Here he is absolutely nailing A Question Of Lust in LA back in March. Great to hear the 'full' version as well.
#DepecheMode
Why yes, I am on a bit of a One Night In Paris thing at the moment. Wanted to post a track from Exciter and here's something I hadn't watched for years. When The Body Speaks, with some great interaction between Dave and Martin. Lovely stuff. Were you there?
#DepecheMode
While we’re on a Rock am Ring thing, I had to post Photographic. I think it sounds great, I’m surprised they haven’t played it more since then. Annoyed as well as I have managed to miss it so far! (Yes, I know they played it at the Albert Hall 2010 and no I wasn’t bloody there!)
Ghosts Again might be the most ear-wormy ear worm in the history of ear worms. I've had Dave singing, "all my - flowers"going round in my head for days. I'm not complaining.
I'm so grateful that Devotional exists. Look at this. You've seen it a million times. But consider the number of cameras, the editing, the fact that you can actually *see* each band member properly. Received wisdom is that they were self destructing: I see a band in their pomp.
Personal Jesus from that World Violation show at Dodger Stadium. Yeah you've seen it before but just LOOK AT IT.
(I will stop posting World Violation videos soon, probably.)
How much would you give to hear a full version of A Question Of Lust on the new tour? What other Martin songs need the full treatment? We love the acoustic bit, but…
#DepecheMode
Would you like to hear 70 seconds of Alan drumming over the Rush bassline? Yes, of course you bloody would.
(I promise I haven't just posted this in order to watch the pro and anti Alan factions have a big fight. Promise.)
I'll tell you what we haven't done for a while: had a bloody good moan about the fact that Depeche Mode have never released anything official from the World Violation tour. No please, after you.
To say that was different to my usual Depeche Mode gig experience would be putting it mildly. Birmingham went off. As Dave put it: "WAY better than London!"
Might write something for
@davidjmcelroy
if he wants it. Now having my FIRST drink of the evening. What is happening to me.
HEY YOU! Another important reminder. From tomorrow, only blue tick accounts will appear in your 'For You' timeline tab. So don't be a silly sausage. Make sure you're on the 'Following' tab or you won't see quality content from me like Martin being a dirty boy here.
For me, nothing will ever beat the opening of the World Violation tour. I loved that they did something different for the SOFAD tour but the sheer undiluted and visceral JOY of the opening hook of WIME at brain busting volume followed by Dave running on stage is perfection.
We all know the story about how Alan and Flood changed Enjoy The Silence from a slow track to the song we know and love, right? Yes. Is it worth hearing the story again? Also yes.
MTV Rockumentary from the Songs of Faith and Devotion era. About 2 minutes in I thought ‘hang on, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this’. Well it’s all quite similar stuff regarding roles in the band etc but still compelling. You can watch the whole thing at:
I just wrote a big long thread about Fletch, and how it's still a real gut punch that he's not with us anymore. Deleted it because you all know what I mean and we all probably feel the same. This period before an album & tour is always exciting. But bloody hell, it's bittersweet.
This is NOT posted to elicit any 'come back Alan' comments so you can leave those out, but my word he and
@300hz
played a thunderous NLMDA in 2012. If he ever tours Recoil again I want to see ALL OF YOU there, no excuses.
Taken from A Strange Hour In Budapest - were you there?
Everything Counts from the ‘84 Birmingham Odeon gig that was featured on the Oxford Road Show. There is a big part of me that wishes Depeche would ditch their preference for low key concert openers and go back to this approach: blow the roof off the place with the first track!
Where do we stand on Somebody? I’m the 80s it was a Martin-sung favourite of mine, but I don’t listen to it all that often now. I love it in the context of Some Great Reward, less keen on it live - although I missed the Albert Hall performance. What do you think?
Told You So from that Oxford Roadshow gig in 1983. This is just two and a bit years after the release of New Life - mind blowing how much Dave's stage presence grew in that time.
Special shout out to Martin's little dance at the start and Alan doing Alan things.
If Depeche Mode kick off their live shows with Ghosts Again, it'll be the most euphoric opening of a concert they've had in a long time. I hope they do.
** Potential unpopular opinion alert ** I thought Angel was a highlight of the Delta Machine tour in 2013. A thunderous version of a decent song. The break after the chorus (1m32 in this video) nearly blew my head off when I first saw it, a real BLOODY HELL moment.
#DepecheMode
Get your week started right with crop-top Dave perving it up for this mimed tv performance of Strangelove. He's clearly enjoying himself, as are the ladies in the front row. If this video had a smell, it would be a combination of hairspray, leather and SEX.
Too much for a Monday?
Five little words to wrap up this Memento Mori Tour. Depeche Mode bid auf Wiedersehen in Köln.
There was just under 4 years and 8 months between the end of the Spirit tour and the start of this one. So we'll do all of this again towards the end of 2028, shall we? Splendid.
WE'RE HAVING A WATCH PARTY.
Your presence is mandatory.
Break out the leather, put the shades on, have a great big snog on the sofa and generally luxuriate in two of the finest things Depeche Mode have ever put out.
Date to be confirmed.
Thanks to
@sodascone
for the idea!
When Fletch died I didn't know if I wanted to keep this silly Twitter account going. It's taken a while but the last week has been really life affirming and great - thanks to you lot. So thanks! Let's keep it going as long as we can. Who knows, maybe I'll post some new polls?! xx
It’s my birthday today so I might as well go back in time and feel my age! Here’s Barrel Of A Gun from Top Of The Pops, January 31st 1997. I was 22 [weeps] First time in my life I’d seen them without Alan. It was a moment, for sure. Great track, TS’s work on Ultra was phenomenal!
Daughter casually drops in to conversation that her friend's mum used to be a makeup artist and worked on a Depeche Mode video. Vague story about driving Dave around in a big fur coat. Timeline matches up for It's No Good. More on this earth shattering report as it comes in.
Let’s have some love for Pimpf. It deserves more than ‘just’ being the intro song on the MFTM tour. It’s an epic track that builds to a thundering climax (oo-er etc) and it SO uniquely Depeche Mode. A slice of occasionally forgotten genius from Martin in his leather undercrackers
"Depeche Mode lack the will or the wit to push for the kind of dramatic intensity that even Freddie Mercury can rustle up. Depeche Mode are caught in limbo, too busy exploiting their product as a cultural gimmick to realise what’s at stake here" Sounds, October 1987
Depeche Mode:
Not the first time I've posted a clip of Photographic from Live In Hamburg. Sue me.
Dave absolutely giving it the big'un here, to great effect. I enjoyed seeing the Some Bizarre version performed live but I'd love to see something more closely resembling the album track.
Policy Of Truth crops up now and then in the ‘live songs that need a rest’ conversation. It was a mainstay of the set until the Global Spirit tour when it got just 10 plays, sometimes months apart. What do you think? (I’d keep it…)
Caroline's monkey eats biscuits in bed
He drives a Ferrari
And he sleeps in a shed
Caroline's monkey does mixed martial arts
He loves a banana
And he lights his own farts
Hey
@depechemode
! Now that the first North American leg of the tour is done, we've all had the album on repeat for almost a month and there is a break before you come to Europe... could I suggest..?
[clears throat]
SOME REMIXES PLEASE THANK YOU
Only When I Lose Myself. Made for the 86>98 compilation, Brian Griffin on video duty and their final collaboration with Tim Simenon. I saw Martin sing a good full band version in 2013 but it’s not been a live staple since ‘98. What do you think? Underrated? Is Surrender better?
