milk is the fattest of any land mammal's. It's about 31% fat when cubs are born, providing enough calories to help cubs grow rapidly.
The energetic cost of swimming in polar bears is 3-4x greater than that of walking—as they increasingly rely on swimming to navigate an Arctic w/ increasing amounts of open water, they'll use significantly more energy than they would've needed historically

: Cubs have to learn all about being a polar bear in just over two years.
How big are polar bears?
Adult males normally weigh 350- 600 kg (775-1,300 lb). Adult females are usually 150-290 kg (330-650 lb). But some can be larger. Researchers in Canada estimated one male bear at 800 kg (1,700 lb)!
Polar bear cubs are born in winter in snow dens. At birth, they're blind, weigh ~ 1 pound & have only a light layer of fur to protect them from cold. Denning is the most vulnerable time in a polar bear’s life.

#UpdateFromChurchill
: Yesterday we saw two males sparring, and we got a bit of snow! In the spring males fight hard for females, but in the fall there is no competition so males seem to become more social and engage in what we call “sparring” or play fighting.

Is there anything cuter than a

cub? Yet, these cubs are a symbol of the beauty & fragility of our planet. Their future depends on our action. If we act on the climate crisis to protect their future, we are acting to protect a livable future for all.

Polar bears can run as fast as 40 km per hour—but only for short distances. Younger, leaner bears are the best runners. They can cover 2 km without stopping. Older, larger bears quickly overheat.

are natural sprinters and very dangerous over short distances!

Polar bear paws have no-slip treads, & they are made for roaming the Arctic. Their huge paws can measure up to 30 cm (11.81 in) across. Tufts of fur between their toes & footpads help with warmth, & footpads on the bottom of each paw grip the ice & keep the bear from slipping.

After feeding in the winter, a pregnant polar bear builds a den in the fall where she gives birth to & nurses her cubs. She’ll emerge w/ cubs in the spring & head to the sea ice to find seals—which means up to 8 months with no meals for mom, an amazing feat!
