For a new progressive cycle in Latin America and the world, I vote Gustavo Petro!
My new book, Capital and ideology, will be out in French on september 12. Sorry it is a bit long... but very readable and richer than Capital in the 21st century! It will be out in English and other languages in early 2020.
Bottom line: rich countries pretend to be in favour of fair & open markets, devlopment for all etc. but in practice the way financial markets are organized & regulated leads to an enormous income transfer from global South to global North, year after year & growing over time

This paper offers a powerful new narrative about globalisation & global poverty since 1980
Bottom line: sure economic openness & trade integration played an important role; but without massive public invt in education, global poverty would never has been reduced nearly as much

Elizabeth Warren's weatlh tax proposal is an historical move. The US led the world toward progressive taxation and the compression of global inequality during the first half of the 20th century. Warren’s proposal will have a major impact around the world.

Brazil: the first republic under threat. From 2002 to 2015 Brasil had high growth along with large poverty reduction. The election of a militarist, antipoor, machist and racist president would be a dramatic setback for the country.

Rising inequality & global warming are the most pressing issues of our time. Written by Lucas Chancel, one of the world best experts, this book demonstrates that they can and should be addressed together, and offers refreshing perspectives on how to do so. A must-read. Out today!
In Capital & ideology, I offer a critical but constructive perspective on inequality regimes & their hypocrisies: in China, but also in USA, Europe, India,Brasil,Middle East.. It is sad that Xi Jinping's "socialism with Chinese characteristics" shrinks itself from open discussion
Probably the clearest illustration of the fact that nothing serious has been done to fight tax evasion within the EU since 2008: if anything the situation has deteriorated. Ireland is getting an extra month of income by siphoning the tax base of others!

Avoiding the worst. To avoid the hecatomb, what is required is a social State, not a prison State. The right reaction to the crisis should be to revive the rise of the social State in the North, and especially to accelerate its developement in the South.

One exemple of new finding from WID inequality update: in 2021-2022, top 1% income share is at its post-WW2 peak in many countries, including the US & FR

Basic income, job guarantee, inheritance for all are complementary and not substitutable. In the long run, all of these policies must be implemented, in stages and in this order.

In the wake of the denial of global warming, now on the wane, at least superficially, are we at present witnessing the denial of the rise in inequality?
