Head of Foundation, Bolton School, independent day school for 2400 pupils 0 to 18 FInstP FCCT Chair, HMC Communication. Chair
@IDPE_Europe
. Governor
@theGSAL
I have spent half of today with
@educationgovuk
guidance and the rest building a snowman. Only time will tell which was the more worthwhile task. Some have suggested that the snowman may last longer than the guidance ... let’s see.
At the risk of many replies telling me that “independent schools can afford it” I do object to the logic here that those young people who are in independent schools are not being fully included in what is, after all, an NHS activity.
Much has been written about independent school fees and independent school parents and pupils this week. Without engaging with the politics, here are a few facts that it would be wrong not to mention in support of our parents and pupils
@boltonsch
The news story that should be written about exams this summer is “we don’t know what will happen about exams yet but when we do we will report it. Until then we won’t because we know every speculation worries young people and is bad for their well-being”
My last assembly as Headmaster of Boys’ Division this morning. Comfortably over 250 assemblies in 13 years from the Great Hall stage. And very much a comma, rather than a full stop. I will give assemblies across the Foundation in my new role.
The plan from Monday is that boys will be up and ready for 8.50, to be registered remotely, ready for period 1 at 9.15 and the rest of the day. They should have break and relax at lunch time and expect to have a little homework beyond 4pm, as usual.
And so the last day of an historic term begins. It is rare to be able to say so, but
@BoltonSchool
has never done a lockdown term before in the last 505 years, years which includes the Civil War around Bolton and the beheading of the Earl of Derby.
Usual nonsense about school closures in Bolton on the news cycle at present. As I made very clear on
@SkyNews
last week, schools have never closed - they have educated pupils either at home or in school buildings. Yes a good few pupils are not in school, but they are learning
I thought I was completely secure in my understanding of energy stores in physics only to be confronted with one I had missed - “biscuit energy”.
@IOPTeaching
For every full fee payer
@BoltonSchool
there is a direct benefit to the state of the £5k it does not have to spend on a place in education. Effectively that is very nearly a 40% “surcharge”. So I think those parents have done their bit for state funds without talk of VAT
Ready for some supervision of ‘key worker’ boys from Monday. We will all keep our distance in school and lots of cleaning and hand washing to make sure as many as possible keep as well as possible for as long as possible
Thank you to parents, boys and colleagues who have made the virtual school work so well this week. Everyone has played their part to give the boys some structure at a very strange time for them all, keeping them connected with school and one another and making progress.
#tesISAawards
Independent School of the Year . The whole award ceremony celebrates and acknowledges the hard work of all schools and our commitment to be part of the success of UK education for all
Welcoming all boys back to the school buildings today, for the first time for some 175 days. I am sure they will be both excited and nervous about renewing some social interaction and about feeling safe and secure. One things sure - their hands will never have been cleaner
Fair access is absolutely essential - I say that as a comprehensive school boy who went to Oxford and as the Head of an independent school. That is why
@BoltonSchool
held an Oxbridge admissions day for our own pupils and local state schools
Spent 25 minutes talking to myself in Great Hall. May well be ‘normal’ but usually the boys are at least present in body if not in mind.. ..anyway at nearly 750 views , counting siblings, we had a decent attendance this morning at assembly.
All just mitigating risk and providing confidence - no cases at school at all and let’s hope that remains true for a good while yet. Founded in 1516 we have lived through many historical events so we can surely respond sensibly, calmly and cooperatively to a virus
Recommissioned my clarinet after nearly a decade. Playing a musical instrument is a remarkable thing - as a quiz question I couldn’t have told you what fingering was what note, but as I began to play it just seems natural
Happy New Year to all
@BoltonSchool
- thank you to boys, colleagues and parents, partners and
@BoltonSchAlumni
who made 2020 work and who will help us chart a sensible course through 2021. The boys only get one go at being at school and it needs to be as good as it can be.
I have just met with the Captain and Vice Captains of school to say think you and farewell. Rather earlier this year, but an important tradition and a very heartfelt thank you for their leadership in school this year.
Test centre scaled up and ready for action tomorrow. 98% consent and so far 92% booked in and there is still time today. So many thanks to the colleagues who have made this happen and who will be involved for the next couple of weeks. All helps I. Getting us back to school safely
So that ends the summer term. 30 years of teaching and my 13th
@BoltonSchool
- but I am NOT superstitious - this year was not like it was because it was my 13th!
Sad news today that former
@BoltonSchool
colleague Dr Steve Cooper died suddenly at the weekend after a heart attack. A well loved chemistry teacher, rugby and cricket coach, Housemater and fisherman , through all of which he enriched school life.
I am delighted to be the first Head of Foundation
@BoltonSchool
as the Governing Body invest in the leadership capacity to take our thriving and busy schools on to their next steps
I do hope it simply hasn’t been thought about properly, As health care delivered by schools,rather than education, there can be no valid reason not to fund the activity in independent schools. It is not about the “state v private” argument - it is about the health of young people
The sooner these drinks are common place and not “cool” the better. Indeed I have thought about being seen drinking them, which would instantly make them boring.
Thank you to all my colleagues
@BoltonSchool
for all the many things they have done, gone along with, invented, understood, decided , changed again and implemented over the last year as we have responded to the pandemic. It is very much appreciated.
Always seeking a first
@BoltonSchool
. For 110 years the sergeant has brought boys to the Headmaster to be asked to be Captain and Vice Captains of School. Today I appointed the team for 2020/21 by
@zoom_us
. Even Poskitt (who was head for 33 years) can’t have done that, surely?
Attacks on independent schools are the wrong answer to the right question - which is to ask how the drive to continue improving education for all can move ahead, which independent schools are a part of. How can selection based on house price be better?
Yesterday we announced to parents the arrangements for fee discounts this term, so that quite rightly we give back money we have saved and, in addition, help to share the financial shocks of C-19 for school families.
The corridors at our Y13 Parent Evening - it was our very first virtual evening tonight with teachers contacting parents using video conferencing or telephone. Much better to chat to share key advice for the run up to exams even if we can’t meet as normal
In case any
@BoltonSchool
boys are wondering what has happened to the school bees in our absence, GJB has taken them home in his car and housed them with his own hives. So 25,000 bees will be making new friends in a new neighbourhood for a while
Happy to host
@SkyNews
at school this morning to tell the positive story of how local schools and public health have worked together for the good of young people and their education during the spike of cases in Bolton
Thank you to all the boys, parents and colleagues who have, by their collective determination, made this term work for us all. That is the
@BoltonSchool
ethos in action, which we normally try to capture in words. Very best wishes for the summer break
We are not yet at the end but a year on from schools closing it is right to look at a most extraordinary year and say thank you. We often speak of the
@BoltonSchool
ethos, this year we have lived it. I have never been prouder of the whole school community.
Day One of our “new normal”
@BoltonSchool
leading a virtual school - 80 or so boys learning remotely but supervised at school as key worker children between senior and juniors and the other 1060 scattered around the North West.
A couple of very nice emails from key workers this weekend thanking us for looking after their children. Of course, it is us who should be thanking them for their vital and challenging work.
Welcome to my 17th Secretary of State for
@educationgovuk
and now 8 in 14 years of being a Head. This year the pupils who began reception
@BSPDInfant
when I arrived
@BoltonSch
leave the sixth form: education policy really does deserve a longer timeline from our political leaders
It is a health care process being delivered through schools and so has nothing at all to do with how the schools are funded but the pupils access to universal health care. Why is
@educationgovuk
@DHSCgovuk
excluding independent schools from funding?
I usually enjoy the hours after boys leave for summer as the building becomes still and quiet. This year I think, with us all connected electronically, the equivalent is not having an email for the last 4 minutes - time for the holidays!
My message to the parents of Y13 and Y11 boys this evening - an important time for home and school to support the young men in a time of radically changed expectations around how the next few months will be for them
Three things seem clear to me in the endless debate on Education and technology - that technology does have a place in lessons, that social texting on phones does not have a place in lessons and that we need to educate youngsters about why one does and the other doesn’t
Thank you to everyone, without you we wouldn't be able to make this happen... and without further ado, we can reveal that this year's
#tesISAwards
winner of independent school of the year is
@BoltonSchool
!
Thank you to the boys, my colleagues and to parents for all they have done to make the half term work so well. Keep safe over half term and I hope you can relax and recharge for a couple of weeks
We're delighted to announce that Philip Britton MBE
@Philip_Britton
, Head of Foundation at Bolton School
@BoltonSch
will serve as HMC Chair for the 2025/26 academic year. We’re sure you will join us in congratulating him on his forthcoming appointment.
It is a truly amazing sense of community that already some £15k has been raised for a hardship fund by those who can happily do so gifting their discount back to support others in school who cannot.
I will invite the four members to school so that we can share better why we cannot possibly be seen as a class based school - more than half are from average or below POLAR postcodes, 1 in 5 on bursaries and 10% would be on free schools meals in state sector
Sound of football and rugby on the Levels coming through the window and the concert band playing coming through the door of the study - great to feel these aspects of school life are coming alive so quickly after our return
Perhaps I am a north/south bore but I can’t remember the
@educationgovuk
blog on how this would be done in Bolton when that was announced weeks ago and has still not happened. At that time our rate was 560 in 100,000.
Looks like we may be braced for a few days of opinion pieces on schools and Covid, written by those who know little of schools and sometimes less of covid. So just to say this once …
@BoltonSchool
BD - Whatever the circumstances, a new term starts tomorrow - sleep well, get up on time, have breakfast, gather your resources, see your tutor on line at registration and I will see you at the full school assembly at 8.55 - you had the zoom code by email earlier
This article is right to praise local public health -
@DrWallBolton
@helenlowey
and teams are doing a great job - focused and unfussy. Yesterday and today I have heard of so many people who have been vaccinated it is a real cause for hope
My very best wishes to Sue. Our decade long partnership has been enormously productive, shaping and securing a national leadership role for
@BoltonSchool
amongst so many other things
Today all key worker children from all parts of
@BoltonSchool
were in
@ParkRoadJuniors
and Beech House, a more homely environment for small numbers, with plenty of room for social distancing. Thank you to those colleagues who are helping to supervise.
Head of Biology in school today and I was glad we were 2m apart for two reasons - the social distancing rules but also because he had come in to collect the school snake to take it home!
Independent school pupils are not all privileged and from rich backgrounds. Some are, but many are not. 20% of pupils
@boltonsch
have bursary support and 7% have full bursaries, far more than the free school meal figure in many Grammar schools and popular comprehensive schools.
Friday morning will be reading morning for the senior boys’
@BoltonSchool
starting tomorrow. Everyone should bring a real printed book to enjoy the full experience. Those who are forgetful may be asked to dip into one of my fascinating physics books from the study shelves …
September will be far more normal than this term has been. Year group areas in school will replace department areas, teachers will move more than the boys, assemblies will remain on zoom but we will all be together doing our normal things
A great effort in school today to distribute around 2500 PCR test kits for some surge testing amongst the boys and the families. With a large catchment area it is important we do our bit to break the chain of infection.
I went to the conference to speak privately and in person, but since that was not possible here are my thoughts from the article in the
@TheTelegraphUK
We will have an “off line” day this Friday - plenty of work to do, but from registration to 3pm away from the iPads - activity themed on and supporting well-being - thanks to
@WellbeingBSBD
@artscultureBSBD
@BsbdEco
and others
No they don’t. They are far more inclusive than caricatured by any of these arguments and at their best can be an engine room of social mobility rather than what blocks it.
Also plans for summer term for
@SportatBolton
with huge focus on getting us all moving again - lots of activity and exercise planned, alongside usual summer sports, with a view to building fitness and avoiding injury. Let’s hope progress with the virus allows plans to take shape
There is much to do with the immediate issues with A level results with sometimes it is worth giving thought to what can be controlled as well as what is already happening. Two things can be controlled ... avoiding a repeat with GCSE and a severe crisis with HE in summer 2021
Finally, we do not just set fees to whatever number we choose. We are careful to be sure we charge only what is needed for the type of education parents expect of us. Our fee is £13k a year (not a term). It has risen by 2% for the last 7 years, exactly in line with inflation.
Our
@BoltonSch
Governors annual account commentary has been quoted in the Telegraph and I am pleased that their strong support for our normal school families is on public record - our parents are not the idle rich - they are hard working, committed , northern families
But aside from those logistics by far the best thing is being in the study hearing the boys and the school around me. That is what teaching is all about
A terrific show in the Great Hall this afternoon for Y7 to 10 as
@IanMcKellen
shared some of his 80th birthday show with us on the stage he trod as a boy. From pantomime to Shakespeare - a great way to spend the day after the internal exams
Data submitted to the exam boards. Thank you to all colleagues for their professional integrity in making judgements and to the hard work of those responsible for data entry. A monumental task patiently and carefully completed
It is simply awesome what the catering department manage with the Christmas lunch every year. Today, over a period of 2 hours or so, very nearly 2500 people had a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings - amazing
And also this morning I now become a former parent of
@BoltonSch
, with our youngest leaving this year. Obviously I believe in what we do here but I must say it has been wonderful to see our own young boys growing into young men to be proud of.
I do hope members of the
@SMCommission
see this for what it is - no more money, more state pupils, no impact on inequality within state sector, selection by house price and a worse system for all. Is that really social justice?
Headmaster
@Philip_Britton
appeared on this morning's Sky Breakfast News show, talking about how Bolton has responded to the rise in cases of the Indian variant - watch it here:
The
@BoltonSchool
Virtual School project had a good start yesterday. The odd improvement to make but overall the vast majority of boys had a busy day “at school”. I think we can settle in to the new normal in the 6 days remaining before the Easter holiday.
Delighted to have 152 acceptances for the Year 7 of 2019. I hope they all enjoy the last terms of Y6 and are a credit to their current schools and then look forward to meeting them later in the summer at induction day
Wishing all the
@BoltonSchool
boys and their families a relaxing and refreshing Christmas break - it will be different this year, but do find ways of recharging
Today the ever flexible
@BoltonSchool
estates department helped me escort a squirrel from the premises when it was found scampering down the corridor. There is always a first time for everything!
A well spent hour cheering competitors in the iron man. We saw Mr Watkinson and Mr Jackson running and Mrs Cotton go past in her bike. Well done to everyone.
