A tale of the convenience and the evil of

We recently installed two Amazon smart thermostats to save energy, and last night I noticed they weren't at the programmed temp and red light flashing. 1/

(since he doesn't post here much): the best thing about generative AI is that we don't have to hear about blockchain anymore at conferences.
Shocked, shocked to hear that big tech hubris-on-steroids didn't pan out -
AltSchool's out: Zuckerberg-backed startup that tried to rethink education calls it quits
Consistent message from student panels re online Ed: make it easy to navigate and find materials, and don’t make excuses. *Not* an argument for carbon copy course designs.
"Today's online courses are evolved cousins of the early MOOC"
Are you kidding me? There are still people in 2023 - edtech reporters even - who think that MOOCs created online learning for the most part.
All for avoiding gotcha journalism & finding positive stories, but we need to get more student input on how COVID-remote transition is going. Too many easy interviews w/o asking tougher questions. Too much talking about students instead of talking with students. Myself included.
Pretty big LMS news: SUNY awards systemwide contract to D2L Brightspace, replacing Bb Learn. This was one of Blackboard's largest remaining customers (one other being CUNY) w/ 400k students.
Expect more analysis later today.
1\ Pretty big news about planned merger between McGraw-Hill Education and Cengage Learning, sounding like all-stock (no cash) transaction between roughly equal partners
Read 'em and weep: Consumer advocates accuse college retailers of "preying on students" with costly late fees for rented books. (e.g. $315 late fee on $136 Cengage rental)
"I Will Survive, Coronavirus Teaching"
At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never teach through Canvas all the time
But then I spent so nights reading the help docs for so long
And I grew strong, I learned how to get along
What is it with the competition between IHE and Chronicle to publish half-baked analyses of the online vs. f2f false dichotomy? This author at least spent 4 paragraphs setting up the straw man (B for effort).
Insight into CC Students and Challenges of Online Ed "The big issue that I've seen in the field is not whether a school should offer online classes ...but how well-designed the courses are and how much support is provided outside of the course"
Meanwhile, everything Amazon shut down for us. Amazon, Alexa, smart thermometers. Worst of all - the last season of

, which I *paid* for.
We own nothing -

does what it wants, however it wants. In the words of the philosopher:
This article captures so much of the current dynamics in one place. Massive expected budget cuts, centralization, campus / system coordination, questions of where faculty fit within governance, need to invest in online, etc.
With multiple EdTech earnings calls, it's interesting to note just how much has changed in the past year since Coursera's IPO. Only Pearson has gone up in this group of mostly Higher Ed focused companies. 1/
The rumors were true. Pearson, owner of one of the biggest OPM operations in the world, has sold that unit after their strategic review. (h/t

The Dangers of Mixing Student Data and Machine Learning Really interesting description of breakdown of machine learning when it comes to human learning - worth a read
@onlinecrslady
A group of 9 HBCUs, funded largely by foundations ($10m), is working on a new online learning platform / quasi LMS call HBCUv aimed at all HBCUs. Focus is on engagement and social connections. Work led by "an arm of Deloitte Digital called Ethos".
You know what would make my day - How about a few more "Our Message / Statement / Commitment during COVID-19" email pushes?
Hearing that my "Safety and that of our other Customers and Employees is our top priority" means a lot to me.
"After a lengthy review of learning management systems (LMS) that included course pilots and feedback from the ASU community, ASU has decided to move to Canvas."
In case you were under the illusion that most faculty are learning the basics of online learning, or that IHE is improving in selection of op-eds, I beg to differ.
I’m taking reservations for EdTech companies interested in meeting w 2U, Instructure, and Chegg at

re. acquisition. $2,000 each. I won’t be there and have no official role, so willing to go as low as $1,000.
July 30, 2019 - the day the OPM market changed. 30 minutes into 2U ($TWOU) earnings call, stock down 25% in after hours trading. 2U is moving from primarily rev-share grad program OPM business into diversified business including full-university deals, fee-for-service, 1/
On 2U / edX earnings call ($TWOU), we get yet more insight into the enrollment AND revenue challenges for degree-based business (-7%), and the growth of alternative credentials (+12%).
This week has already started the wave of restaurant / bar / cafe shutdowns, and the wave of layoffs in many industries. This is going to be painful - I feel awful for so many of the hourly workers that are likely to be hit first. Tip big while you can, order take-out, etc.
Fascinating study by IHE of faculty attitudes on & usage of online, textbooks, LMS Real bright spot is about online experience leading to improved teaching overall
The deeper you look, the worse the ProctorU data breach appears. tl;dr - data for 444k students available online from as recent as 2017 (not 2014 as company claims); many US students, not just in Australia. 1/

That most-used of remote teaching crutches is becoming more problematic. Zoom CEO has acknowledged issues and froze all feature development while they try to fix security / privacy.
I would give h/t to Jeanette Wiseman if I knew her Twitter handle.
I suppose this is a good time to let out the unpopular opinions and experiences (and be able to claim account was hacked).
'An Evening With John Denver' was one of the best albums of the 70's. And I sang backup for Barry Manilow in 1981.
MOOCs have low completion (5%), small course online offerings (iow NOT MOOCs) have 85+% completion; article lede: "How have instructional designers collectively moved the needle so dramatically on completion rates?"
#nailedit
And we have a new leader in the 'dumbest Covid-19 analysis' category in the Chronicle. Are you kidding me - treating emergency move of f2f online with actual research on effectiveness?
