For anyone who is still unsure, the absolutely disgusting (and yet entirely predictable) amount of racist abuse being directed at certain England players right now, is exactly why the team has been taking the knee.
A couple of small changes to your diet can make a huge difference. Here, for example, I replaced 'not having an ice cream' with 'having an ice cream' and it was really lovely.
Pretty sure we'll all be underwater and/or on fire in 30 years so, y'know, just have an ice cream.
When you say we shouldn't teach kids about racsim, you forget that young Black kids and kids of colour HAVE TO learn about racism. They have no choice in the matter.
This breaks my heart. He's just a baby. 11 years old.
As usual, the replies to those pointing out the racism involved in the Child Q case are full of people shouting "Bollocks!" or "what about Muslim rape gangs?"
Well please allow me to retort.

"I'm Marcus Rashford, 23 year old black man from Withington and Wythenshawe, South Manchester. If I have nothing else I have that."
Honestly, we don't deserve this kid.
Just a reminder that Simone Biles has won 25 World Championship medals (19 Gold) and 6 Olympic medals (4 Gold), but by all means, you sit on your sofa with your mouthful of beef crisps and your can of Monster and tell us all about how bad an athlete she is.
Hey
@MarcusRashford
. You wrote in your times article that you "don’t claim to have the education of an MP in parliament."
Please don't ever think that these people are smarter than you. They are not.
Ok, so let’s address this. I’m 23. I came from little. I need to protect not just my future but my family’s too. To do that I made a decision at the beg of 2020 to start investing more in property. Please don’t run stories like this alongside refs to ‘campaigning’.
Seeing quite a few "I messed up my A'Levels and it didn't do me any harm" tweets.
These kids didn't mess up.
They worked unbelievably hard in the middle of a fucking pandemic. They already showed their "grit and perseverance" and their reward was to be completely screwed over.
So who wants to play a game?
Apprently there is no institutional racism in the UK. But there must be SOME explanation for the clearly evident racial disparity that shows up in all aspects of our lives...
#TryNotToBeRacist

Remember when we were like "yo, racism is structural, it's inbuilt, it's embedded," and you were like "shut up, stop playing the race card," and we were like, "nah, fam, I'm telling you," and you were like "quit playing the victim," and we were like "..."

You know what strikes me as odd* is that we're waiting for this verdict, genuinely unsure as to whether the man who killed another man by kneeling on his neck for almost 10 minutes... ON CAMERA... is gonna be found guilty or not.
*not really odd at all, I suppose.
So what's funny is that for the Golliwogs article, I accidentally went on a bit of a Facebook trawl for comments. Want to see some of them?
Of course you do. Settle in. 🧵

STOP. BEING. SURPRISED. BY. RACISM.
So speaking about Ukraine, Prince William said Britons were more used to seeing conflict in Africa and Asia. “It’s very alien to see this in Europe."
Bruh, seriously...where you wanna start....
If a student has to not be a student just so that they can afford to be a student... something is fundamentally broken there!
Anyway, that's one thing.
So this thread 👇🏿seemed to strike a nerve (you have to read past the first tweet btw!)
I have a lot more to say about this stuff, but I need to think carefully about how I phrase it so that I don't... you know... get fired.
I'll try for fewer typos this time too.

Police are still unable to explain why their powers are disproportionately used on people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, a watchdog has said
As annoying, frustrating, and genuinely demoralising as this is for me, I think it's important to ask why this is happening.
There was a real clamour from students for face-to-face teaching after 18 months of lock-down, zoom teaching, but they just aren't showing up.
Pro-tip. If you can't pronounce someone's name properly, then you should just learn how to pronounce their name properly.

EVERYONE: Well the government's response to Covid_19 hasn't been great, a lot of people have died, and now a recessio.....
THE GOVERNMENT: Look! Brown people in boats.... LOOK AT THEM!!! LOOOOOOOK!
This is Gateshead Leisure Centre
I spent A LOT of my childhood in here doing all sorts of sports and a lot of the things I've gone on to do are genuinely because of access to this as a kid.
Gateshead Council can no longer afford to run it. So much for levelling up, huh?
You don’t get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as ‘Gesture Politics’ & then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we’re campaigning against, happens.
I, for one, feel much safer knowing that there are people like this, proper Englishmen, protecting proper English statues and proper English monuments, on my proper English behalf, standing up for proper English values like shouting, aggression, drinking, and Puffa jackets.
The case of Child Q is the result of a complex tapestry of racist stereotypes, assumptions, and practices, that resulted in a very long list of failures to adequately protect a child.
It was racism. It was horrible.
I try to be optimistic. Honestly.
But, for the love of Tina Arena, everything is awful, isn't it? And while I know it might seem simplistic, naive even, there's got to be a better way of doing just about everything. 🧵
Mini 🧵
I've talked before about how we're all very much socialised into a society steeped in
#racism
.
It's in the many subtle (or not so subtle) things that we learn without being explicitly taught.
Exhibit A...
Lots of students work. This isnt news and isnt new. But what is new or at least different, is the amohnt of students trying to hold down basically full time jobs whole studying.
One of my 3rd yr dissertation students a few years back was working 40 hours a week!
"Insisting that you’re not racist because you judge people on their character might seem like the woke thing to do, but it’s basically ignoring and denying the lived experiences of people who are systematically on the receiving end of discrimination."
Watching the gymnastics today, I wish I'd kept count of how many times white gymnasts were called "beautiful" and "elegant", while the gymnasts of colour were described as "strong" or "powerhouses."
Listen out for it.

How young were you when you realised that the police were a threat, rather than there to keep you safe?
I remember being pretty young when I figured that out.
I imagine a lot of you were yesterday years old.
I was born in England. I've lived here my whole life. You know, now that I think about it, I went to school with a girl named Karen Ba92354398. Maybe you're related?
We know that Black children are more likely to be perceived as older than they actually are. I know this from personal experience, but no one cares about my experience. We want facts and evidence, remember?
Okay, how about this...
"Y'know, describing people as having chocolate skin (etc.) is kinda problematic."
"Oh. Actually, now you mention it, I get it. I really appreciate you pointing that out."
"No problem."
"Cool, I'll think a bit harder about it next time."
END SCENE
I make no apologies for retweeting this shit over the weekend. Ignorance is not always bliss. Some still choose to believe that racism doesn't exist, or that it's not that bad. Some are "shocked" by this, or think that these are bots not worth engaging with.
1/
Even in the darkest times, we will still be reminded, approximately every 37 minutes, brown human beings are thought by many to be worth a whole lot less than white ones.
Take my word for it, this is considerably less fun if you are one of the brown ones.
It's all very well and good to say "this wouldn't have happened if the girl was white," or "this is a clear example of yet more racism," but I think it might be important to explain how and why we *know* that to be true, rather than just repeating it over and over again.
Black people are stopped and searched for drugs at almost seven times the rate of white people BUT Black people reported using drugs about half as much as white people (4.7% compared to 9%).
Black boys as young as 10 are more likely to be mistaken as older. So what do we think are the consequences of that? Well if you think a child is older than they are, what assumptions might you make about them?
So when children are thought of as adults, they are treated more harshly by teachers, police, judges, and anyone else who is supposed be providing care. Black children are more likely to be thought of as adults and more likely to be presumed guilty...
YOUR generation would routinely chant "N***er, N***er, lick my boots!" at Cyril Regis, but sure, you never thought of those players as Black or white.
What a load of absolute trash.
We were the generation who grew up idolising Viv Anderson, Laurie Cunningham, Cyril Regis, Brendon Batson. We never even thought of players as black or white - just great players. Idols. Now we're called racists because we don't agree with taking the knee. It's BOLLOX!
When we need undercover police to watch the undercover police watching women in bars, and more undercover police watching them, bars will be full of increasingly deep undercover police just watching each other, while everyone else just stays at home.
The Mandelbrot Police.
So I just had a look at
@MarcusRashford
's timeline and was not expecting the emotional response that hit me.
What that young man is doing with his voice, and how people are responding is at the same time utterly wonderful *and* a stark reminder of this Gov't's abject failure.
What do you feel when you see a group of 10 year olds walking toward you in the park versus a group of 15 or 16 year olds? Is your reaction different?
Probably, if you're honest.
For accessibility reasons, providing these materials is obviously important.
But we have to find a balance between providing the means to support learning and providing an 'alternative online learning experience.'
I believe we are getting that balance wrong.
I won't give him the satisfaction of a retweet, but he should know that he is a direct contributor to the mental health issues he then derides athletes for discussing.
"Don't celebrate bronze"
"Mental illbeing as weakness"
"Real champions do X"
But hey, clicks and RTs right?
So your reaction to a group of 10yo Black kids is different to a group of 10yo white kids. Not because you're a giant racsit, but because you are probably assuming the Black kids are older than they are, and your response to *that* is different.
For example, anger bias means that teachers are more likely to perceived Black children as angry than white, which can lead to "Black children being disciplined unfairly and suspended more often from school.” There are obvious consequences.
Imagine getting yourself into a situation where your whole career is just saying really horrible things for attention.
Imagine having to actually live like that.
Having to be that awful, all the time.
It must be soul-destroying.
I feel bad for those people.
It's *almost* like the mew of far right shitehawks descending on London today to "protect the Cenotaph" by shouting "England Til I Die," pushing things, and scowling, don't really care about anything other than racism, pies, fighting, and Carling.
It's *almost* like that.
If you don't 'get it' after listening to this eloquent, simple, & quite lovely explanation of privilege from
@JohnAmaechi
, it's because you choose not to. You've decided that you don't want to get it, & no amount of examples or further explanation will help. So don't ask for any.
If you need that money to survive, you're gonna have to work, and unless you're in a job that works exclusively nights, you're gonna have to miss class.
I'd love to know the stats on students with PT jobs and average hours worked.
What does this have to do with Child Q? Well, stop for a second and think about what this might mean for Black girls who are also perceived as older than they are.
I wonder whether students just sort of got used to not having to really engage (cameras off, no talking), realised they could still pass that way, and thought 'fuck it, I'm not doing a 3 hour round trip for a 50 minute seminar.'
Which is kind of fair enough, really!
Well, the backfire effect is a quirk of human thinking. In the face of any evidence that contradicts their world view, people will dig their heels in and double down on their beliefs. So instead of just presenting facts, let's see if we can think this thing through a bit.
You are either racist or you are anti-racist; there's no fence to sit on.
BUT...
You don't get your anti-racist badge and that's it, you've made the team!
Nor do you 'do a racism' and that's it, you're on Team Racist for life.
It is an ongoing, dynamic, process of thought.
