I do question my own sanity sometimes as I’m balancing my phone on something to film what is a very mundane task for people on Twitter that I don’t even know. It’s these everyday moments though that people never get to see, but are actually some of the most rewarding.

After a football match a few weeks ago some idiots tried to have a fight after the game and Bawtry was punched by one of them. Bawtry’s having the last laugh because we’ve just heard that he’s been banned from football for 3 years.

Given what’s happening in the world this seems rather insignificant, but I had to make the tough decision to take this little fella to the vets for the last time this morning. He’s been stuck to my heels for 16 years and died as I wanted, in my arms. 💙💔💙 #mansbestfriend

Utterly devastating news. Our beloved Ginger Gentleman, PH “Billy” Brinsworth has sadly passed away. He couldn’t recover from a twisted intestine. Billy won’t get to enjoy that retirement but may this beautiful, brave, and kind soul rest in peace with no more pain. So very sad.

1. Well Billy didn’t get an award last night, a Police dog called Buzz did. Congratulations to Buzz and the team. These animals serve the public and their handlers so valiantly it’s tough to separate them. However, here’s my own tribute to this legend of a horse:

Sad news this week as we heard RPH Oakwell (George) has sadly passed away at the ripe old age of 28. He was a real character and a safe bet for new riders due to his bravery and calm nature. Here he is teaching me to ride in 2019.

We ask a lot of our horses but we do try to make work a positive experience for them as best we can. I’m constantly talking to Foggy, giving him a “leg hug” when he’s uncertain, or like here, a good scratch on his withers. This was moments after he’d separated two angry groups.

After a busy patrol of Sheffield I brought Bawtry in to see the vet. He just hasn’t been quite himself recently and is such a tough fella that it’s hard to tell if he’s suffering or not. We were right to call the vet out. He’s got a bad chest infection so R&R for a few weeks.

I took big Henry on the school. Being a massive (inflexible) Clydesdale he’s really tough to ride for me. It’s a bit like sitting on a submarine so I tried to work on his bending and flexion. We made some progress but whatever, we both enjoyed each other’s company. He’s a 💎

It was a great privilege to lead the team out for the match yesterday. A significant minority seemed intent on confrontation early on, but thankfully we had sufficient resources on to thwart them. An excellent policing operation to keep people safe.

PH Wortley, our newest recruit, is on box rest with canker in his hind foot. I’ve been able to spend lots of time with him and he’s almost the polar opposite of Treeton. He’s so affectionate that he won’t leave you alone. Lovely gentle guy who’s fitting in really well.

Another struggle with a drunk, aggressive man in Firth Park, Sheffield the other day. He clearly had problems and we did everything we could NOT to arrest him but he gave us no choice in the end. Trying to bite me was the final straw. The only muzzle I’ll accept near my face:

Sully is one of those horses I trust completely not to bite me (even softly) when he does this. I also completely trust him to tug on my elastic drawstring and fire the plastic adjuster into the back of my neck. As we say in the Police… he’s got form for it! Vet update to follow

Sad news. RPH Burngreave has sadly passed away. He’d enjoyed a very relaxing retirement after many years of service for SYP. My thoughts are with Dave Driver, who was paired with Burney for years and they were extremely close. My first riding lesson here. RIP. 💔

Morning view. It’s been a tough week for the Reed family as both my parents are quite poorly in hospital. Work have been fantastic with me, especially the team who have all messaged me at some point to check in. Back to work tomorrow for a Foggy fix.

Bawtry’s life-story simply would not be the same without “T”. She found him, brought him in, trained him into the amazing PH that he was, and rode him in some extremely volatile situations. Here she is dropping him off in his new palatial retirement home.

I’ve had loads of lovely enquiries about Bawtry and his health. Suffice to say that the whole team and our vets are all over it and he’s doing really well thanks to the rest. He’s 19 now so we’re continually assessing his Policing future and I’ll keep you all posted. 💙

I loved being back in the saddle with Treeton yesterday. He helped keep groups of feral youths from confronting each other at Donny v Grimsby, and thoroughly deserved that carrot. The old fella’s not lost it.

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve missed the big lad and it was great to take him out on a local patrol today. It was like putting on an old pair of comfy slippers. 😂💙😂
