President of Iceland 1996-2016, Chairman of Arctic Circle
@_Arctic_Circle
. Reporting on the Arctic, climate, energy, oceans, geopolitics & international issues.
On the first night of the new
#vulcanic
eruption in
#Iceland
my son-in-law, a forceful mountaineer, hiked to the location and took this video. Iceland is an ongoing
#EarthShow
!
Her show continues! Demonstrating to the people of
#Scotland
what independence would look like on the global stage. All the leading
#USA
representatives at
@COP26
participate in this political theater! Has nobody told
@BorisJohnson
what is going on?!!
Today
@ScotGovFM
met with US
@ClimateEnvoy
John Kerry to discuss the need for developed countries to support the global effort to tackle climate change.
Scotland and the US will continue to stand together at
#COP26
and beyond in order to fulfil the goals of the Paris Agreement.
A great montage a fellow Twitter user very kindly put together to highlight all the influential people and world leaders Nicola Sturgeon has been meeting and engaging with on behalf of Scotland over the past couple of weeks. We are lucky to have her as our First Minister.

What the picture actually shows is the leader of Scotland, welcoming visiting dignitaries to a global event being held in Scotland, discussing the climate challenges we all face together. Your narrative tries to imply a political agenda, where one does not exist.
The Government of Scotland decided following the Arctic Circle Forum to create a new Arctic Policy. Just finished a constructive meeting in Edinburgh with officials from various ministries and institutions engaged in its formulation. A new geopolitical position for Scotland.
The eruption continues! Now 7-8 craters endlessly sending columns of burning lava up into the air. Yet a vessel today landed a considerable catch of fish in
#Grindavik
. Now being processed at the local plant. The
#Icelandic
spirit!
On a personal note: Wore the same suit as when I visited 24 years ago my hometown
#Isafjordur
, the first time as President. Despite all the dinners and launches in this almost quarter of a century they still fit! Do I deserve to be proud? Result of daily walks and exercises
Today she would have been 85 years old. Yesterday her eldest granddaughter, bearing her name, gave birth to a baby girl. Even the most painful tragedy can led us to the celebration of a new life.
#GudrunKatrin
Over 30 years ago I was privileged to establish cooperation and friendship with their fathers,
#RajivGandhi
and
#MurliDeora
. Pleasure to meet their sons
@RahulGandhi
and
@milinddeora
; leaders on a mission.The rally in
#Dubai
had tens of thousands.
Never before in Earth’s history! The leading
#Icelandic
scientists have in the last few days stated that the
#volcanic
eruption in the
#Grindavik
region is evolving in a way unique in global
#geological
times.
The eruption could happen in the coming hours. Or movement of the lava up to
#Grindavik
surface could also stop. The pendulum swings from utter disaster to complete safety. Science can not provide the answer. The people of
#Grindavik
stoically wait the fate of their community.
Like ocean waves the burning magma flows over the mountain and the 1000 years old lava. What we are seeing are the newest rocks on Planet Earth. Proving that the Creation is a never ending process.

Taken in the last hour by the
#Icelandic
Coast Guard. The eruption and the lava flow so dangerously close to
#Grindavik
. Our thoughts are with the people of the town and their families.
Meeting the First Minister of Scotland
@NicolaSturgeon
: How the Arctic enhances the geopolitical importance of Scotland and
@ArcticAssembly
facilities cooperation with Asian and European countries, the EU and others. Independent role like Quebec, Greenland et al. demonstrate.
The volcanic eruption continues. The largest crater has now been building up to a height similar to a building with over 5 floors. And still forcefully emitting burning lava.
The
#Icelandic
engineering and construction teams continue to work wonders in the new
#volcanic
area. Have now made a road across the new
#lava
and another replacement pipeline to bring the hot
#geothermal
water to thousands of people; now living in cold homes.
For those who followed the sad news of our beloved
#Samur
passing away earlier this year, we now share the splendid, somewhat unbelievable, report that now
#Samson
has been borne in the USA due to the process of cloning. More news and pictures on Dorrit’s Instagram!
The people of
#Grindavik
gather in the capital for a Town Hall discussion with the Government about their future; whether their unique and dynamic community will again have a home.
Another masterpiece by the
#Icelandic
photographer
@gollmundur
. The volcano creates the red clouds behind the capital
#Reykjavik
. Has any other capital ever had such artistic background created by the
#ForcesOfNature
?
The replacement
#geothermal
pipeline was also damaged during the night. Therefore thousands of people will be without hot water and heating in their homes for some days. Electricity also cut off in some districts. The crisis continues.
The people of
#Iceland
now mourn
#VilhjalmurEinarsson
, a hero of my youth who was the first Icelander to win a medal at the
#Olympics
, 1956. His name will always remain golden in the history of the nation; inspiration to every new generation.
Taken now. 15 minutes to midnight. The
#Icelandic
tradition of fireworks in every city, every town, every village, every street. Wish you all a successful, peaceful and prosperous year.
Professor Thorvaldur Thordarson is now stating that the likelihood of a volcanic eruption within or close to town
#Grindavik
is now considerably less than before; due to different rock layers interacting. But as
#Icelanders
known too well: The Forces of Nature can surprise us!
New volcanic eruption in the
#Grindavik
area
#Iceland
. More powerful than the previous ones! The opening of the ground over 3 km long; burning lava flows out of it all. The Icelandic rescue teams made sure everyone is safe.
#VigdisFinnbogadottir
, the first woman in the world to be elected Head of State in a nationwide election now celebrates her 90th birthday. Served as President of
#Iceland
1980-1996. Honored today in multiple ways by the nation. Congratulations Vigdis!
The engineering and construction capabilities and originality found in
#Iceland
are producing a reserve repair of the
#geothermal
pipeline bringing hot water again into the houses of 30.000 people in the
#Reykjanes
region. Hopefully this afternoon!
The biggest earthquakes are now close to the island
#Eldey
, out in the sea, short direction from
#Grindavik
and the
#Reykjanes
peninsula. Therefore eruption could be on the seabed. Adding a powerful dimension to the uncertainty. Enhanced suspension for all concerned.
In the recent hours scientists have reported that the massive burning
#lava
is reaching the surface under the town of
#Grindavik
; indicating that the
#volcano
could erupt directly within the town. The darkest of all possible scenarios.
Building barricades to defend infrastructure against the burning lava flow: houses, pipelines, roads, the geothermal power plant and other key places. An
#Icelandic
invention! Has served us well in recent years!
Three on a sofa while the bridegroom’s procession danced to the festive Indian wedding music. Faraway from their previous responsibilities as SG of
#UN
, PM of
#UK
and P of Iceland!
The old family house in
#Isafjordur
which my father acquired in 1930. Was over 110 years ago imported as a
#Norwegian
whalers house. I was borne in this house 14th May 1943 and last month I bought half of it; the part where we lived over 70 years ago.
An extraordinary disciplined and efficiently organised operation; demonstrating the cooperation between the people of the town and the national voluntary rescue teams. The pride of the nation!
The newest scientific data shows that a big and very dangerous eruption is becoming more likely. The people of
#Grindavik
and the entire rescue and monitoring teams are demonstrating admirable calm and courage.
My Tweets are a way of communicating in English to the international network on the issues listed in the banner. Although I occasionally comment on Tweets in Icelandic it does not change the longstanding language format.
Ég á bágt með að trúa að Vigdís sé ýkja ánægð með að

svari íslenskri fyrirspurn

um hundavæna veitingastaði á ensku. Við verðum öll að hjálpast að svo við endum ekki eins og Danir!!
Series of strong earthquakes close to
#Reykjavik
, the capital of
#Iceland
, have lead to warnings from the scientists; calling for prevention measures now in case of further
#volcanic
eruptions.
The news are getting more positive for the courageous people of
#Grindavik
. The measurements of earthquakes and magma movements seem to indicate that a volcanic eruption is now diminishing day by day.
In the light of the great global reaction to this photo
#Dorrit
has proposed on her
#Instagram
an annual musical folk festival close to the new volcano. Competition for the name of the festival now open here. One suggestion: Volstock, inspired by the famous festival. Your ideas?
When I entered the old family house in
#Isafjordur
earlier today as the new owner a wealth of memories from my youth filled my mind. The people of the town have for nearly a century called the house
#GrimsHouse
- Grimshus; after my father.
I was deeply moved to return to my home town
#Isafjordur
and chair the meeting in the People’s House where the mega historic
@kerecis
deal was announced. My parents and their generation who build that house nearly 100 years ago would have been proud.
Congratulations to my successor
@PresidentISL
on his election victory. Clear mandate for a second term. May he and his family continue to enjoy their time at
#Bessastadir
, the historic Residence surrounded by beautiful nature.
#Turkey
will definitely broaden the
#Arctic
dialogue. Turkish delegation and participants will be welcomed at the next
@_Arctic_Circle
Assembly and e.g the upcoming Forum in
#Berlin
.
@ORGrimsson
Turkey released it's Arctic strategy and academics publishes Arctic related works more and more. On Polar Sciences there is an annual meeting which gathers hundreds of scientists
Of course they are all recent news but it is safe to say Turkey will become a significant partner
The cars of the rescue teams now queuing up outside
#Grindavik
in order to transport people to their evacuated homes to gather personal essentials. Only 15 cars at the time allowed into the town.
The distinguished
#Icelandic
#geologist
Armann Höskuldsson declares that a volcanic eruption is definitely getting closer. The only question: Exactly when? In the next hours? Days? Absolutely within one or two weeks.
As the eruption becomes more likely and the potential lava flow threatens
#Grindavik
my thoughts are with the people of the town and their families; many friends for decades. Last night the dedicated rescuers had to go house to house to evacuate the town.
The volcanic forces of nature are like a gigantic artistic painter. The lava flows from the new
#Grindavik
eruption. The canvass Planet Earth in the
#Reykjanes
peninsula.
Taking the fast speed train from
#Shanghai
to
#Beijing
. What a way to celebrate a birthday! 76 years after being born in my parents home in
#Isafjordur
, Túngata 3.
Historic election in
#Greenland
. The left wing pro-independence party Inuit Ataqatigiit won great victory. By far the largest party. It’s leader, the 34 years old Mute B Egede probably the next PM. The
#Arctic
is full of surprises!
Magnificent spectacle said a scientist! Came all of a sudden. The speed of the lava flow extremely fast. What we
#Icelanders
call “a tourist eruption “! To watch. Not fear!
At Bessastaðir, the Presidential Residence, I was honored by the Prime Minister's
@katrinjak
unveiling of my bust which now joins the busts of former Presidents of
#Iceland
. The President Guðni Th. Johannesson opened the ceremony; attended by my family and other guests.
You’re right,
@milinddeora
. Liberalism is still the best engine for equitable progress. We have to strengthen the progressive centre of Indian politics, which is where
@INCIndia
has historically stood.
GREAT NEWS: The
@_Arctic_Circle
Assembly WILL TAKE PLACE IN REYKJAVIK OCT 14-17. The first big multi-sectoral post-Covid gathering in Europe. SEE YOU ALL IN ICELAND!!
Hildur Gudnadottir
@hildurness
! You have not only made
#Icelandic
history but also
#global
music and movie history. The first Icelander and the first young woman in the world to win all the major awards. Will be remembered for centuries!
Due to reduced risks the people of
#Grindavik
are now allowed more time in their return visits. The Mayor even expressed his hope that economic activity might soon be back to some kind of normal. Perhaps the eruption was a temporary scare!! But monumental destruction occurred.
The lava from the new eruption has cut the main
#geothermal
pipeline which serves neighbouring towns and villages with hot water, e.g to heat the houses.
First time in 7000 years! That is the
#scientific
verdict on the new lava coming up through the crater. Straight from the deep interior of our Planet. Last time such rocks came on our surface was 7000 years ago. No wonder people are fascinated by the new addition.
As the people of
#Grindavik
and the nation wait for the eruption, the rescue and surveillance teams discover large scale damages to infrastructure and houses; caused by the powerful earthquakes.
