#ExpeditionNovaScotia
Here she is, the great
@MaryLeeShark
herself. In the past we’ve tracked her a few times off the coast of Charleston, SC this time of year. Since white sharks stick to pretty precise migrations, there’s a chance that’s where she’s at now.
Be advised! For the first time ever, we are tracking a white shark in the Long Island Sound. 9’ 8”
@GWSharkCabot
is just off the shore near Greenwich. Follow him using the browser on any device at
Officially announcing Nova Scotia Expedition. We’ll be heading to Canada for the first time ever to tag white sharks. This epic trip will be our 33rd expedition.
Huge shark! Watch right after the man splashes. Though it looks like a large white shark, we suspect it’s more likely a basking shark. Either way it’s big! What do you think? Video sent by Jon Azato taken 20 miles off the coast of Oregon Inlet, NC
We just tagged our second white shark of
#ExpeditionNASFA
. Meet Helena, a 12 foot 1 inch female caught near St Helena Island in South Carolina. We'll be sharing more about her soon, stay tuned!
Sending well wishes to
#AtlanticCanada
as they prepare for
#HurricaneFiona
! Many of our sharks are in this region. It'll be interesting to see how they react to the storm. Will they stay deep or head offshore? We'll be watching their movements closely
After weathering 3 storms and grinding it out for nearly 3
weeks with no
#shark
sightings, we were elated to successfully sample a 1,602lb
#whiteshark
today. The fog lifted & Mother Ocean gifted our science team the 12' 9" subadult female we named "Acadia".
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
Check out this huge shark spotted from a plane by OCEARCH fan Alicia Grimes near Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia. Who thinks they know what kind of shark it is?
A year ago today we met this beautiful 17ft, 3,500lb Queen of the Ocean Nukumi!
She’s the largest animal we’ve been able to sample, tag & release in our NW Atlantic White Shark Study. Her size & scars help tell inspiring stories of her decades helping balance our oceans.
Shark number 9 of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
just swam off the lift and he was big! The fishing team says he's one of the toughest sharks they’ve ever brought back to the cradle. A tough shark deserves a tough name so say hello to Ironbound! He was also tagged by West Ironbound Island
Meet Breton, the first white shark tagged during
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
2020. He’s named for the wonderful people of Cape Breton. It’s only our first day of fishing for this trip and we already have one shark. What a start!
We just tagged our first ever white shark in Canadian waters! Everybody meet
@NovaTheShark
. Nova is a male who’s just over 11ft long. We tagged him off the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia.
#NovaScotiaExpedition
This
#WorldOceansDay
we celebrate the heroes of the ocean: sharks. Sharks balance the ocean’s fish stocks and are a crucial piece in bringing the ocean back to abundance. By studying these heroes we help inform ocean policy, advance research, & educate future generations.
We tagged Amy in 2008 at Guadalupe Island. Her tracks helped us discover a Pacific birthing site. Sign up for a chance to come with us to Nova Scotia where we hope to tag the next shark that leads us to a new nursery.

What a beautiful shark and a beautiful name picked by
@SeaWorld
. Unama’ki is 15’ 5” long and 2,076 pounds. That makes her the 2nd biggest white shark we’ve ever tagged in the NW Atlantic.
What an unbelievable start to
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
! Meet the first shark of the trip
@Sydney_TheShark
. He’s 12’ 2” long and 1,200 pounds. He is named after the town of Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Two years ago from today we got our last ping from
@MaryLeeShark
off the New Jersey coast. We miss hearing from her but we believe she is still out there visiting all her favorite spots. Celebrate her by snagging a Mary Lee tee
Believe it or not, no sharks means no fish sandwiches for us humans. As the balance keepers of the ocean, the apex predators keep the whole system in check.
Unbelievable...another 2 shark day! Shark 10 of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
is another sub-adult male and we named him Teazer after a ghost ship that’s rumored to patrol Mahone Bay each year.
Finally a big mature female! At 15ft long,
@WhiteSharkLuna
is the second biggest white shark we’ve ever tagged in the North Atlantic. She was tagged on Canada’s Thanksgiving and named after the wonderful people of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
A few days ago, 35 mi. W. of Tampa, Florida boaters had a unique
#WhiteShark
encounter. Spotting this
#GreatWhiteShark
in the
#GulfofMexico
doesn’t surprise our science team, since in recent days we’ve seen a great deal of activity there on the
#OCEARCH
Global Shark Tracker.
White Shark Mary Lee is not only famous for her uniquely shaped dorsal fin, but after being sampled back in ‘12 “She has done more to undo what JAWS did than any shark in history. Fans embraced her, loved her, and followed her movements for years.” - Chris Fischer OCEARCH Founder
Help us name a shark! We just sampled, tagged & released a beautiful juvenile female white shark. She was 10ft 3in long and was an estimated weight of 522lbs. We met her off the coast of Ocracoke, NC. We’re excited to see this shark inspire future generations of ocean stewards.
“When you handle an animal of this size it will hit you in a completely different way from an emotional standpoint.” -

So cool to see
@WhiteSharkLuna
open wide for us just before we released her. It’s an incredible moment we’ll never forget from this spectacular
#NovaScotiaExpedition
#WhiteShark
Andromache travels to Canadian waters for the first time! After being tagged off
#CapeCod
in 2020, we’ve seen her spend her past 2 summers in this region, but this morning she pinged in the Chignecto Bay off
#NewBrunswick
, Canada!
Big news! All 11 white sharks from Expedition Nova Scotia are now loaded into the Tracker. White shark Bluenose had only been z-pinging up until now, but he finally sent a location ping from the coast of Virginia.
Wow check this out!!
@BrunswickShark
is in New Brunswick. While we know white sharks visit this area, he’s sending back the first actual pings we’ve ever collected from between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Very cool!
Yesterday we saw our first juvenile white shark in Nova Scotia. We named her Caper and her presence shows us there is a whole new piece of the white shark puzzle up here beyond just big adults.
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
We’re thrilled to announce that we successfully tagged our third white shark during
#NovaScotiaExpedition
. Introducing
@WhiteSharkHal
! He’s a 12' 6" male named by our partner
@SeaWorld
for the people of Halifax
While out fishing yesterday in the Florida Keys,
@barbiedoll0087
had a visitor. She says they encountered this large white shark about 6 miles off Geiger Key
Introducing
@GWSharkJane
...the first female white shark ever spot tagged in Canadian waters. She’s the 5th white shark tagged on our
#NovaScotiaExpedition
. Jane is not mature yet but she’s still 10ft long! It’s an honor to name her after Captain Brett’s mom.
Our 3rd shark of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
just safely swam off of the lift! It’s the first female of the trip and the 2nd biggest we’ve ever tagged in the NW Atlantic. Her name is Unanmaki, which is what the indigenous Mi’kmaq people call Cape Breton and means “land of the fog.”
Celebrating
#SharkWeek
by remembering some of our biggest sharks. Keiko, one of the first true behemoths we ever encountered, was tagged in 2008 at Guadalupe Island, MX. She helped improve our technique for handling massive sharks.
Just finished up our last day of fishing here on
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
with a bang! Shark number 11 of the trip, another male, just safely swam off the lift! A name and more details to come soon.
Unbelievable! 2 sharks in one day! Just as we released a sub-adult male, we hooked up with another sub-adult female. Stay tuned for more details and names.
Who else caught a glimpse of this spectacular moon tonight? We just snagged this awesome shot while anchored near Hilton Head, South Carolina during
#ExpeditionNASFA2020
.
White sharks are lighting up the Tracker right now near Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. At least 5 have pinged in just the past few days. We’re right in the middle of all these pings on the eastern tip of Prince Edward Island.
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
Check out this incredible track we got from the 5 years
@MaryLeeShark
pinged for before her battery ran out. Today is the 3-year anniversary of her last ping. While we’re sad we won’t be hearing from her again, we’re so thankful for the wonderful data she sent back.
#GreatWhiteShark
Rose was named after beautiful Rose Bay,
#NovaScotia
She’s a 10’5” 600lbs juvenile female. From smaller juveniles to big mature
#whitesharks
both males & females, the diversity of
#shark
profiles here has been a rich discovery for the science team.
#FactsOverFear
Introducing Flower, a female juvenile white shark we sampled, tagged, & released yesterday afternoon.
Flower is 10ft & 1in long & weighs approx 528lbs.Flower is named after our friends the Flower family who have been incredible to us throughout our years in Nova Scotia.
Just SPOT-tagged shark
#5
of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
! Her name is Bluenose after the famous schooner that dominated these waters and has become part of Nova Scotia’s identity. She is 11’ 5” long and is absolutely beautiful!
1,701 pd “Mahone” is the largest male
#whiteshark
#OCEARCH
has worked up in the NW Atlantic
#greatwhiteshark
study. Named for
#MahoneBay
& French for a vessel commonly used in piracy, the bay has a rich history of hiding pirate ships. What new data could Mahone also be hiding?
The 4th white shark of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
just safely swam off the lift! To our surprise after 3 adults in a row, she was a small 8’ 8” female. The people from Cape Breton call themselves Capers and so we are naming this shark Caper.
Florida scientists from
@MyFWC
were surveying for right whales on Saturday when they spotted 2 white sharks off the coast. They also saw a group of 11 unidentified sharks too.
Right now the waters off North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia & Florida are full of large white sharks. It’s a trend we’ve observed for years during this time period and now we’re calling this zone the North Atlantic Shared Foraging Area (NASFA). More
Today we met
#whiteshark
Maple. She had a distinctive wound on the left side of her body & after initial assessment our science team believes it was likely due to a recent interaction with another larger, white shark. This interaction was possibly an example of dominance behavior
So thankful for the nearly 40,000-mile journey we got to follow
@MaryLeeShark
on. Today is the one year anniversary of her last ping. We believe she is safe, but her tracker battery likely ran out since it’s past its 5-year lifespan.
Katharine is alive & well! Tagged in Aug ‘13, & she’s still giving us her location more than 7 years later. "This is a record for our Atlantic SPOT-tags, that normally only send white shark data to us for about 5 years." said Dr. Bryan Franks of
@JacksonvilleU
#FactsOverFear
We’re so happy to see
@Shark_Katharine
ping again. She’s off the North Carolina coast right now. We’re watching closely now to see if she’ll head to a birthing site or a mating site.
We’re thrilled to introduce white shark Martha, who's the 4th shark of
#ExpeditionMA
and is named after Martha's Vineyard. She's a 7ft juvenile shark, & the 3rd juvenile of the trip. This is exciting because we’ve tagged many larger & smaller sharks but few in this age range.
Introducing white shark Ferg! He’s 11’ 8” long and named in memory of Ray Ferguson, one of the founders of our incredible partner
@Costasunglasses
who recently passed away. He is the 6th white shark of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
.
OCEARCH's collaborative approach allows scientists from multiple institutions & disciplines the opportunity to come together to learn more faster. Joseph, a Masters Student from the U. of Windsor working onboard named 11’8” 1,185 lbs “Edithe” after his mom.
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
Hey everyone...we need your help suggesting names for our next tagged shark on
#ExpeditionMA
. We're working off the coast of Massachusetts and are looking for a name that has a meaning that references the area. Let's hear your best names.
A big goal for our Nova Scotia Expedition is finding out if mature females are up there. If we discover that they are, it could indicate white sharks are mating there.
#NovaScotiaExpedition
A strong name for a shark with a strong attitude. Say hello to white shark Ironbound. He’s named both for his toughness and because he was tagged near West Ironbound Island. He’s the 9th shark of
#ExpeditionNovaScotia
and the 2nd we got a semen sample from.
Could it be fate? Just hours after we named a shark Scotia, white shark
@NovaTheShark
pings in for the first time in months only a few miles away! So cool Nova and Scotia are together just off the coast of Nova Scotia.
Since we tagged
@MissMay_Shark
a week ago, she’s been pinging up a storm! She’s already traveled over 230 miles and we are so excited to see what new data she will share with us.
Meet Tuck! We were able to sample and tag this 8’2”, 283lb Male Juvenile white shark early this morning in the Monomoy Region off of Massachusetts. He marks the 2nd animal on Expedition New England and the 72nd animal tagged for our Northwest Atlantic White
#ExpeditionNewEngland
Meet mature, male
#whiteshark
Bob! Bob is named after our Chief Scientist Dr. Bob Hueter who has been a pioneer in shark science for over 40 years.
Bob the shark was 13’4” & weighed approximately 1,308lbs. He marks the 80th shark of our NW Atlantic White Shark Study.
Ironbound is now up and pinging on the Tracker for everyone to follow. The fishing team says he was one of the toughest sharks they’ve brought back to the cradle. He is off the coast of Maryland right now.
The focus for this coming
#EarthDay
is “Protect Our Species.” One of the easiest ways anyone can help is by making a donation to conservation efforts. Help us gather critical ocean data by making a contribution today
Officially announcing Expedition Nova Scotia! Five of the six sharks tagged last year have returned and now we’re heading back too! Get your expedition tee and sign up for expedition events now
2 white sharks in 1 day! We’re honored to name the second one
@Jefferson_Shark
after
@JeffsBourbon
. Their commitment to our mission has funded our expeditions to countries around the world. Their support is leading to an abundant future for our children.
What a privilege it’s been to connect with the Halifax and Lunenburg communities up here in Nova Scotia. Now we set out to try and tag our first sharks in Canadian waters.
Wow look where white shark Unama’ki is! She has moved west of the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s the first time we’ve tracked a white shark to this area off the coast of Louisiana. Is this a whole new piece to the white shark puzzle?
Here’s why it’s not as crazy as you might expect being on the platform with a white shark. We’ve worked hard to make the process as quick and safe for the shark as possible.
Check out the incredible connection
@SeaWorld
animal care specialists share with their animals. Having
@SeaWold
as a partner helps us build strong collaborative science teams for each expedition.
Our
#SharkWeek
Big Shark Countdown wouldn’t be complete without Amy. At over 16-feet long she was also one of the girthiest sharks we’ve ever tagged. Her tracks helped reveal a white shark nursery in the Gulf of California.
Introducing
@MissMay_Shark
, the first white shark tagged during
#ExpeditionNASFA
. The 10-foot shark is named after Mayport, FL, which will be the site of a joint
@JacksonvilleU
and OCEARCH facility and our permanent home.
This large white shark spotted yesterday by
@MyFWC
scientists about 25 miles off the coast of St. Augustine, FL is a good sign for our next expedition kicking off out of Jacksonville in less than 2 weeks.
