Oftentimes I’m asked what a superintendent of schools does …
My answer? I’m a CEO who ensures adult issues don’t get in the way of what students need.
📝 While there is a lot more to it and the role is far from easy, my happy place remains in the presence of children.
I’ve been saying this for a long time... There is NO achievement gap without an opportunity gap! Focusing on achievement puts the onus on students while focusing on opportunities puts it on communities, educators, policies, and systems.

I recently retweeted a tweet by
@HeatherTDay
about straightening my hair before interviews, speaking engagements, etc. On the contrary, I recently celebrated a milestone bday & chose to practice what I preach about natural BEYOUty & confidence in who I am!

I’m so grateful for the warm welcome from the
@chccs
BOE & community who are unapologetically focused on equity, wellness, culturally responsive deeper learning, inclusive & affirming spaces & amplifying student voice. Already feeling at home & honored to serve as Superintendent.
As I got dressed for work this morning I was reminded of a comment someone made to me a few years ago. I was told, “... you know it’s unlikely you’ll ever become a superintendent - unless it’s maybe in an urban district - with natural hair.”
Let’s check the receipts ...
Equity is not a buzz word, program, checklist, or initiative ... in order for you to drive & expand your vision, it must be embedded within every action taken and considered as you solve problems of practice. Challenge yourself to omit the word from your vocab & model the way!
In full transparency, I’ve written many letters 4 Supts, yet today I struggled w/what the “new” Supt should say as I penned a letter to my community. I chose 2 focus on student & staff support vs. my opinion. I literally said out loud to myself, “Welcome to the Superintendency.”
Just in case there was ever a question ...
@chccs
is an all hands on deck community of learners, leaders, and supporters. Phillip, the Lead Carpenter from our Operations team, put together 50+ picnic tables to support outdoor eating and learning in just two days! 🤯
When you see school principals walking the neighborhood during dismissal time rather than in the office (or even at the bus loop), you KNOW the school community is in great hands.
I love it

Speak power to truth even when it seems no one is listening.
It’s personal not political ... I’ve got children to raise and 12k+ beautifully diverse students to educate, support, and advocate for! 🖤✨✊🏾

I’m pretty sure the last Kwanzaa principle of FAITH (Imani) + my shirt + my kinky, curly, wild, BEYOUtiful, multi-faceted hair in this picture may sum up my first year as superintendent 🤷🏽♀️
Note to self … when you “stop by” a
@chccs
school on the last day, be ready for anything!
I couldn’t say ‘no’ to these 5th graders who were full of excitement, their teachers (who were very convincing), or their school leaders (who gave me no choice). 🤷🏽♀️
Super excited and honored to welcome Dr.
@Rodney_Trice
back home to
@chccs
... we’ve got work to do and he’s THE ONE to walk along side me and the rest of our team to move equity from talk to action!
We bought our youngest son the book, I AM... Positive Affirmations for Brown Boys, for Christmas. Today, I went upstairs between meetings to check on the boys and found big brother reading to little brother, having him repeat the affirmations after him. Words have power! 🖤✊🏾
When “my thoughts and prayers are with them” becomes cliché there’s a much bigger problem and response necessary! As a mother, educator, and superintendent my heart aches … no one should have to send their child(ren) to school or go to work wondering if tragedy will reach them.
17 hour workday on my birthday yesterday! So thankful for my amazing team for their love & support.
Supts are criticized more often than not, but my family showed up to the BOE mtg & surprised me w/public comment (and 💐) … so did students, a staff member, and a parent ❤️
LeadHERship requires peace under pressure + thick skin ... NOT a hardened heart or a worried mind.
Stand firm in your authenticity.
Humility + Vulnerability are necessary.
Grace + Progress > a facade.
Persecution positions you, opposition prepares the way!
#thankmelater
A woman at my PhD defense said “So are you saying racism is STILL so bad it impacts learning environments?”
I said: Well, I, a black student, straightened my hair before coming today. I knew even my natural hair would change how you, my educator, perceived me”
Silence
Yet another confirmation that I made the right decision to serve
@chccs
and move my basketball loving family to Tarheel Nation. Not sure how I’m going to get through my 6 meetings on Monday without being distracted and wanting to walk to Franklin Street, just because.

Need a concrete example of culturally relevant curriculum, instruction, and pedagogy? Here’s an example of a simple lesson plan that leaves the door open for opportunities for teachers and students to go deeper.
Everyone expresses things differently. Here’s a real and raw personal piece I wrote this morning called The Risk, Reward, and {Sometimes} Retribution for Being an Educated Black Family in America.
I try to be a relational leader, committed to my decisions yet flexible in my approach.. unless or until adult issues get in the way of what kids need! Then my approach changes, unapologetically 🤷🏽♀️ Real leaders don’t perseverate on what they have to deal w/ to keep students 1st!
A must read, whether you’re black or white, part of the problem or seeking solutions. There’s not a single lie in this article ... I still have to log on & work this weekend after wiping away the tears from how hard these words hit me!
How about you?
I have to admit, I got fed up with a problem that we created and a problem that this pandemic has exacerbated so I collected every device that “belongs” to my children and sent them upstairs with books. This might have to be a Sunday norm!
Dear Ed Leaders,
1. Never minimize or compromise your “why” just because it happens to make some uncomfortable.
2. Don’t change your mind, because changing hearts is too difficult to do!
3. Equity is risky journey work, yet worth the bumpy road.
Learn to stick with it! ❤️
Teachers & students have not been vacationing or using the pandemic as an excuse, they’ve used the pandemic as an opportunity to innovate, take risks, & show their resilience right up to the last day of class in 2020. I’m a witness w/ 3 students and a PE teacher in my household.
Today I got a text from a principal who asked if I had a minute to talk. In between meetings wanting to be responsive to my principals I replied w/one word, “yes”. The phone rings and said principal says, “I just wanted to check on you and encourage you.” 💙💚 I LOVE my
@chccs
!!
Just so that there’s no guess work, in 2021 my focus = mental wellness of self & others, taking risks, modeling leadership w/ action & deed, refusing to allow adult issues to get in the way of what students need, & a lot of LOL... listening, observing, & learning. Cheers to ‘21!
Not only do I have the privilege of being the Superintendent of THE BEST school district
@chccs
... I also get to learn from and celebrate the North Carolina 2021 Teacher of the Year, Eugenia Floyd from

To every teacher teaching in-person & every building leader, custodian, school nurse, etc. reporting to a building I’m thinking of you. Wishing the virus, the uncertainty & fear were nonexistent. Administrators let’s sharpen our listening skills & practice the SEL that we preach.
I literally have ‘peace under pressure’ tattooed on my forearm and would still need an act of God to exemplify the grace, peace, patience, and skills to respond w/both thorough responses and appropriate non-answers as Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson did tonight. She reigns supreme!
The House passed the CROWN Act (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair)... 235-189 vote to end race-based hair discrimination. My daughter says our next podcast episode will be about the CROWN Act. I guess we’ll be talking about the 189 opposing votes.

This is the first time in months that I didn’t have to kick
@LottieSpurlock
out of the office. I was so pleased to see her with her bags at 5:00pm, I had to take a picture. 😂
Leaders honor hard working leaders by encouraging them to take care of self and not LIVE at work!
Registering for high school courses with my current 8th grader and I just turned into my mother with the “I am your mother, I am NOT your friend” comment.
I’m not ready for this. 💆🏾♀️

Advocacy for what’s good and right for students sometimes brings out what’s ugly in adults. As school and district leaders, we have to be equipped to, “chew the meat and spit out the bones”. Try to remember it’s not personal. Healthy discourse > personal attacks. You’ve got this!
Not too bad for my first time back at it in a long time … walking w/ good music is my physical & mental wellness gift to self. I was encouraged & even more motivated to do the work to close these gaps by the 27

My annual tradition of riding the bus with students on the first day of school resulted in me meeting a new kindergarten friend. Later in the week, I was so excited to see him again.
📝: Remain FOCUSED on children this school year and beyond.

How many children with anxiety and depression go to the school bathroom to deal with their pain? I don’t know the answer, but
@LCPSLegacy
seems to have found an awesome way to exhibit some love and a little SEL for children who enter the restroom. Love it!
Loving the references to Mr. President and Dr. Biden with her Ed.D. in educational leadership!!! They clearly got the memo to put some additional RESPECT on the First Lady’s name.
Crushing COVID-19! Our community partners are coming through in the clutch! Group one gets their vaccine today. We will continue until there’s an opportunity for EVERY
@chccs
employee who wants it. It looks like we can do it in 2 weeks! Stay encouraged. We’re in this together!
My response to the 70+ messages that I received today asking my thoughts:
The news that I wanted to share with my children today was that Georgia elected its first Black and Jewish Senators, NOT this.
That’s it. That’s all I’ve got (for public consumption/social media).
LCPS is a community who cares & comes together in uncertain times. I started my day at
@Park_View_HS
at 7:00AM and they already had 300 breakfasts packed. When I arrived at
@PFannouncements
at 8:00, the buses were already on their way to communities. I need to get it together 🤦🏽♀️
This weekend has been one of those weekends where I wish I could wrap my arms around every family member (near and far), loved one, student, friend, colleague and say, “It’s okay, not to be okay. I see you, I love you, I want the best for you.” 💙💚
I believe in celebrating and honoring Black History in the making on a regular basis. Starting tomorrow I’ll share info about one person (per day throughout February) who is engaging the world in order to change the world with their influence, knowledge, and example. Let’s go!
When you’re an authentic student centered equity leader, some things and some people aren’t even worth your response. I call it

How do you move equity from talk to action & close gaps? Elevate the importance of the work by:
1. Making equity a VERB.
2. Emphasizing the importance of family & community engagement.
Excited to share that the new

Leaders who go through physical or emotional pain, embarrassment, or those who just experience difficult situations CAN still produce positive outcomes w/ their head held high. Consider it an honor to posses a resilient spirit & allow your actions to speak louder than words! ❤️
📝 to Self:
• Listen, observe, and learn ... repeat.
• Establish and maintain genuine relationships.
• Model the behavior that you expect to see of others.
• Be your authentic self.
• Focus on expectation clarity.
• Give yourself the grace that you give to others.
What’s freedom in leadership?
1. Understanding that you have purpose to fulfill, not people to please.
2. Having the ability to meet people w/love and boundaries simultaneously.
3. Realizing that everyone is not in a space to meet you in your growth.
4. Using discernment.
Ended the 2020-2021 school year with kickball, corn hole, great food, and good times with school and district leaders who are all
@chccs
CHAMPions.
What a way to spend my birthday!💙💚
I recently observed a
@chccs
principal push the thinking of the adults (including me) in a meeting for 1 child. I’m so glad that we have school leaders who disrupt the idea of traditional ed. The thing is, that 1 child was mine but I left confident knowing ALL are in good hands!
Equity leadership is more than reciting quotes & recalling history. It’s being able 2 push thru resistance & personal attacks, it’s building capacity in others, hearing opposing views + treating people w/dignity. Remain student centered + advocate w/a sense of urgency. That’s it.
Day 1 of Spring Break ❤️ I had the pleasure of going to Chase Park & Elliott Woods communities to talk w/parents about their questions & concerns. I also got to connect with some beautiful
@chccs
students who welcomed me w/open arms, treats, gifts, & lots of spring break smiles.
Most Principals would be annoyed that the Chief of Staff was visiting their school the day before a break, but not
@shontelsimon
and the
@ForestGroveES
family. These young people literally welcomed me to (in their words) “the BEST school” and exemplified their love for learning.
As a district leader, one of my mantras was “I’m staying in my lane and collaborating as much as possible”. I’m learning that in this role, it’s being responsible for a multi-lane highway doing great things and making hard decisions WITH school/district leaders, not 2 or 4 them.
3 years ago today, I defended my dissertation in honor of my grandfather, Raymond Plummer. My committee = best of the best … tchr + admin eval guru, James Strong, Exec. Director of the

Never allow your position or the position or perceptions of others to compromise your beliefs and core values. When people and systems prevent you from protecting children, especially your own, you must remain in the fight unbowed.
May your HEARTwork continue.

As a leader, admitting when you’re wrong is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of accountability and maturity. It teaches those you lead the importance of humility. We don’t lead in perfection but truth.
- Wendy Whitaker
So ... thank you to
@chccs
for allowing me to lead here, authentically. I no longer question how I look or whether or not I’m “too Black” to do so.
What are you being told you can’t do because of how you look or who you are? I challenge you to BE YOU and generate your receipts!
Excellence in education requires perseverance. To me forward thinking means planning for and implementing what you CAN DO rather than perseverating on barriers + what can’t be done.
Perhaps focusing on our path rather than our past will get us there. We owe it to our children.
Some people believe in equity work but few are actually committed to it ... there’s a difference!
@LottieSpurlock
thank you for your grit and persistence on the equity leadership journey.
Sometimes you have to tweet just because ... yesterday while checking on office moves and our week of summer cleaning, I noticed I was twinning with our Parent Engagement Specialist, Carla Smith, so we had to snap a picture.
I love my team’s willingness to have fun at work!
Today I participated in 15 quick 20 minute “pop-up check-ins” with Principals, Assistant Principals, and district staff (certified, classified, and administrators) just to connect, answers ?s, hear concerns, etc. I’m exhausted AND it was the best ... I’ve got to do this again!
One thing hasn’t changed for me ... first day of school insomnia. Excited to see our
@chccs
students back in school buildings for in-person instruction in t-minus 6ish hours! 💙💚
What a ❤️warming reality check to overhear my middle schooler tell his sister about his fave teacher providing examples of how the teacher is funny, engaging, & intentionally makes attempts to CONNECT w/him. Then I heard, “I hope I actually get to meet him in person one day.” 😏
Anyone else in deep thought about the fact that these two Civil Rights giants passed away on the same day in the midst of an eerily familiar time that mirrors much of the movement that they fought so hard for? Much love and respect as they both rest in perfect peace.

“Return to School” planning & decision making are important & so are plans w/actionable steps 2 combat systemic racism.
Let’s stop using the word “equity” 4 everything to articulate what doesn’t seem right.
Instead model equity leadership w/out misusing or overusing the word!
Leadership isn’t about having a wish bone, it’s all about having a BACKBONE... it takes courage, strength, unwavering faith, and resiliency!
