That innings by Suryakumar Yadav was absolutely extraordinary.
One of those that, after the match is over and you’ve had chance to take a breath, you feel privileged to have seen live.
Very excited, after two years of work on this project, to finally hold the finished book in my hand.
For those who have been patiently asking about it, now available to order here
Many thanks to
@benjonescricket
and
@LittleBrownUK
for their hard work
Today is my 33rd day in isolation since Feb. I’ve seen my family for a little over 3 weeks in the last 6 months. Most players have had it as bad or worse, plus the pressure of playing.
Commentators “…many of these players have had a lot of time off recently…” 😡
Worth noting that Galle is one of the most toss dependent venues in the world. In 33 Tests played there before this series, only once had a visiting team lost the toss and won the match (Pakistan 2000).

Having taken the tough decision to step away from touring with the England white ball team, it’s a huge comfort to have found such a fantastic replacement. The role is in very good hands. Go well, Fred.
A player in every England squad plus IPL, from Jan 2021 until Mar 2022 would spend 96% of those 15 months away from home.
I dont think it's been grasped what these players are being put through
Having listened to the commentary from the T20WC Final it’s hard not to feel for commentators of a certain age. It sounds just like me trying to discuss TikTok with my daughters
One likely side effect of Pant’s early aggression has been to kill the reverse.
Eng had it tailing nicely around the 25th over. A few trips into the stand later and it’s gone gun-barrel straight since
A question being asked a lot is why haven’t more slower balls been bowled in the Ashes when batsmen are attacking?
There are various reasons - an old Dukes ball moves more than an old white Kooka, the wide rules in Tests give bowlers much bigger targets to aim at etc. (1/2)
@theoldbatsman
I’ve looked at this before. If the player bats in the top 4 then the 50, 50, ... guy is more beneficial.
He is taking up a greater percentage of the more dangerous overs in the innings. This increases the expected scores of the batsmen who follow him compared to 100, 0, guy.
We’ve somehow arrived at possibly the worst way to adjudicate low catches
Fielder convinced he’s caught it
Batsman watches the catch from 15m away happy to walk
Umpires who had a perfect live view not allowed to give an opinion
One very blurred inconclusive replay. So not out
@melindafarrell
There’s probably only a 25% chance that will happen 🙃
There is a 50% chance the other team will win the first SF and a 50% chance the other team will win the second SF.
The countries in dark blue are the ones who have an unarmed police force. Norway, New Zealand, Iceland, Ireland and the UK (NI excepted). The coolest club in the world to belong to.
We don’t have much to be proud of at the moment, but this is something

has had an impact in at least one area 🤣.
‘Hitting Against The Spin’ has been the
#1
bestseller in Cricket Books for the last 2 months. But we just got knocked off our perch by a Children’s activity book.
@benjonescricket
A welcome distraction between meetings…
First day of an Ashes series is always a bit special.
Exciting first session - good luck to
@benstokes38
and the team for this afternoon 🏏
Abdul Rehman has been named the national side's Head Coach for the series against Afghanistan!
Umar Gul will serve as the bowling coach, while Mohammad Yousuf will be the batting coach.

Can we please stop demanding certainty from scientists and politicians. There can be none.
There isn’t enough information about what we are going through.
We can ask the right questions
We can hold them to account.
But, if we demand certainty, we are demanding they lie to us /1
I love tennis. Love playing it, love watching it.
Can’t remember any time the press conference was a highlight of the match.
Could talk you through the top twenty matches I’ve seen from memory. Can barely remember a single thing anyone said in a press conference

Wobble means the seam is almost still but not quite, so the ball’s movement is variable and unpredictable.
It dips, then rises, goes left then right.
When the ball swings the rotation of the ball holds the seam steady and it keeps moving predictably in the same direction
My youngest: It doesn’t look like there’s many people watching. Is it because the seats are blue so you can’t see which ones are full?
Me: There’s 130,000 people there. The seats are actually orange 😂
Youngest: 😳😳😳

Talking about freedom, sat in Margaret Thatcher’s old Rover.
Earlier I spoke to
@Telegraph
about how important cars are for families to live their lives. It’s something anti-motorist Labour just don’t seem to get.
And it’s why I’m reviewing anti-car schemes across the country.
I wrote this piece with the help of Dr Pete Alway exploring why fast bowlers are prone to stress fractures
Even strongest spines in sport fail to stand up to fast bowling
@BoothCricket
It’s less about the format and more about the tournament. Every team has exactly the same amount of money to spend, and off-field resources are not equal but comparable.
Therefore teams are well-matched in quality.
I think the table would look the same in any format
I’ve loved watching International Rugby for decades, but it’s becoming a really hard game to enjoy.
Important games invariably turn into boring arm-wrestles that are decided by one poor bloke holding a whistle

When Ian Bell passed a hundred caps, he got messages from all the other hundred-capped players, many suitably lengthy. From memory (v fallible so apologies) David Gower said
‘They say it’s not How, it’s How Many.
They’re wrong, it’s how’
As Alastair Cook retires from professional cricket, here is the piece I wrote when he retired from Tests. Of the articles I’ve written this is my personal favourite
On a used and turning pitch, these boundaries would be on the large side for a men’s game. They haven’t helped this match as a spectacle. But well played

Well deserved win
