Infrared satellite footage of the Tongan volcanic eruption shows atmospheric gravity waves rippling along in a backwards "c" shape 🌋 This is likely the result of a temperature inversion, preventing the volcanic plume from rising any higher & instead spreading out laterally.

Yesterday a beautiful circumhorizontal arc was observed along the Pipiwharauroa Trail in western Waikato. 😍 This phenomenon is NOT a rainbow, but an ice halo caused by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals in cirrus clouds. Have you ever seen one? 📸: Andy Ngiew
